Geomapix Gateway : A Private Cloud Computing Solution In 2011 the world cloud computing market reached $25 billion. By 2020 the market will reach $159 billion. As with GIS technologies, in the future, cloud computing technology will be more integrated in our businesses. What is Cloud?

desktops to clients from a large pool of Servers in a Data Centre. In a digital sense, you are splitting up the capacity of one physical Server box and distributing as “little servers” that clients can use it to load software, distribute applications, and store data.

Cloud computing is really about delivery of desktop computing and storage capacity in a network over the Internet. It entrusts services with a user’s software, data, and computing power. There are several service models in use;

Platform as a Service (PaaP) is the next step of delivering a solution that includes the server infrastructure with an operating system, programming environment, database, and web server to deliver applications over the Internet.

1. Infrastructure as a Service 2. Platform as a Service 3. Software as a Service

Software as a Service (SaaS) is cloud services that are installed and operate application software in the cloud and cloud users access the software directly or through a web browser scenario.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is the basic service model of providing virtual Moving you forward with the latest in GIS server technology.

Tech News : Why Public Cloud Computing is not for Every Person or Business What is a public cloud to most people?

The user does not need to worry about the maintenance or the infrastructure and platform on which the application is running. We use a Private Cloud Model for our clients. This means that applications and data are blocked from external users and can not be accessed or altered without the proper permissions.

While that may be true you should ask one very important question. Will your information truly be safe from external threats? I will tell you it is a fact that with the competitive nature of cloud services and external threats from hacker groups like Anonymous today’s Open Cloud

computing is NOT safe for business critical services. Its fine to keep a copy of your non sensitive information in the “CLOUD” but sensitive information should be managed using a protected private solution. A private cloud solution where your business services and data are protected within a data centre that is continuously being monitored 24/7 for intrusion, backed up, and is redundant. A private cloud solution is far superior to any public commercial system out there today. The biggest issue is people and business never think of what security measures are taken to protect information and just

trust that it’s done! When compromised, public cloud will cost you! Did you know that 20% of the data that is kept on a public cloud is on a system that sits in an inadequate data centre in parts of the world that do not have proper policies to protect your information. Please consider this before you go ahead and plan to place service and data that you may not want others to see. Get assurances, ask a certified IT professional to help.
