Cochise and the Chiricahua Apache Cochise was a Native American chief of the Chiricahua Apache tribe. He fought to stop the movement of settlers onto land that had belonged to the Apache. Cochise was a skilled warrior. He fought for many years against the settlers moving onto Apache land and against the army that tried to protect the settlers and force the Apache to move to a reservation in New Mexico. There were many wrongs done both to the Apache and by the Apache in this fighting. When the government finally offered to move the Apache to a reservation in southwestern Arizona, where the Apache had made their home for many years, Cochise finally surrendered. The Chiricahua Apache were moved to the reservation in 1872. Chief Cochise died June 8, 1874. All of the Chiricahua Apache reservations have since been dissolved and the people forced to leave.
