Valentine’s Day Fun

The Grade 11s gave out beautiful water-wise wire beaded roses to every pupil in the College. What a wonderful idea to include everyone in the friendship and caring of Valentine’s Day at Bridge House! They made the red heart cards which accompanied the roses and these were sold to fund the roses.

Wearing civvies with a touch of red, white or pink, made people smile

For entertainment there was a pop-up performance with a romantic theme, by the lead singers in the upcoming musical, Aladdin.

Valentine’s Day in the Grade 9 Afrikaans Classes This fun lesson for the Grade 9s involved a competition to identify herbs and flowers, (in Afrikaans), with their eyes closed. Not quite as easy as one would think!

Weekend activities for Erica and Huguenot Boarders Last weekend, Huguenot Boarders were in for an action-packed, fun and enjoyable weekend. Firstly, after supper on Friday night, they left Bridge House in the Quantum en route to a destination unknown to them. They stopped off for some essential snacks and ice-cream before heading to the final destination at the top of the Franschhoek pass to watch the sun setting. Unfortunately it was cloudy, but that did not stop them having a great time. On arrival back at Bridge House, they went for a night swim in the swimming pool which was a lot of fun, playing water polo and successfully managing to create a three man tower in the water! On Saturday, Huguenot and Erica Boarders went to the Ice Rink in Goodwood. For some boarders, it was their first time skating on the ice, and for some of the adults, it brought out the inner-kid in them all over again! When they got back, they had a masterclass on how to play rugby by the mighty victorious English team, before watching a movie to end the night. On Sunday, the boarders enjoyed a swim in the pool playing games as well as some well needed relaxation time before the beginning of the next week. Thank you to the house parents Mrs le Roux, Mr Sutcliffe and Mr Lawrie for arranging these activities

Visiting Ex Head

Allan Graham, Head of Bridge House from 1997 to 2002, and his wife Dal who taught in the Prep School, visited us from the UK where they now live. As the Founder Head of Oakhill in Knysna, Allan was involved with Bridge House as a consultant even before being appointed Head. How wonderful it was to reminisce with them about our school's incredible journey from 19 January, 1995 with 54 pupils housed in an unused state school building in Simondium, to 2018 and our magnificent 28 hectare campus and world class independent school.

Bread Tags and Bottle Tops – please don’t stop collecting This week, thousands and thousands of bottle tops and bread tags collected by the Bridge House community, were loaded up and transported to the Bread Tags for Wheelchairs organisation. We are very excited that in exchange for this collection we will soon be able to hand over a wheelchair to a needy recipient in the community. Well done to Christiaan Cloete who launched the idea at school, to Mr Dave Fuller who put so much time and energy into the project and to every one of our students and parents who steadfastly collected the tags and tops. Onward, and upward we go - please don’t stop collecting. There is no limit to the number of wheelchairs we can earn and at the same time save the planet from this plastic waste.

On the subject of saving the planet, please say no to straws! We encourage you to join the worldwide movement to eradicate the billions of plastic straws being trashed annually. “A small straw may not seem like a big problem, but when we look at our reliance on this petroleum based, single-use item, on a global scale it becomes very apparent that this unnecessary habit poses a huge threat to the health of our planet” – Straw Wars. Plastic straws have been found in the nostrils and stomachs of animals and birds and in unsightly piles of pollution. At Bridge House straws blow around and become buried in the soil. In the interests of saving our environment and making Bridge House a cleaner place to be, we ask you to take part in the #NoStrawChallenge.

These items are made from PLA (Polylactic Acid) which is a polymer made from renewable plant starch resources. There is no oil or petroleum used in the manufacture of these items (unlike their plastic counterparts). Growing plants is better for our environment than drilling for oil. PLA products requires almost 70% less fossil fuel resources to produce than plastic items. These items are compostable in a commercial composting facility within approximately 45 days when exposed to bacteria, heat and moisture. However, should these items be sent to landfill they still offer the environmental benefits of reduced greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. They will eventually decompose in a landfill. Ultimately the compost heap is their ideal destination to ensure that the earth’s mineral cycle continues. BIOBAGS (CLEAR BAGS WITH GUSSETS) These items are made from Wood Cellulose or Corn Starch.

60 Minutes with the Heads – Monday 26 February Note that this Monday 19 February is the final day for submitting agenda items. In the interests of good and improving communication between school and parents, Mike Russell and Marc Barrow, Heads of the College and Prep respectively, will host the termly 60 Minutes with the Heads meeting, on Monday 26 February in the Learning Commons from 08h00 to 09h00. In order to help the Heads prepare properly for this, please e-mail any questions or concerns (of a general nature) you may have, to [email protected] by or on Monday 19 February. The PA has kindly offered to bundle these into a folder and forward them to the Heads, who will then prepare responses to the matters raised, and e-mail out the agenda. Parents interested in these agenda items will be welcome to come along and participate in the conversation. Please note that any issues mailed to PA@bridgehouse after that closing date will not be on the agenda for this meeting, and will either be replied to in the interim, or carried over to the next 60 Minutes in the third term. The rules for 60 Minutes are simple:      

it's a constructive and collaborative initiative; matters raised and mailed through need to be of a general nature; if deemed a better option to do so, the Heads can respond directly by e-mail to any issues before the meeting; there will be honest and frank responses and discussion around the topics on the agenda; questions from the floor need to be only about the agenda issues: no "surprises" and no "general" please! giving the Heads some preparation time is simply so that if figures and data are required for an answer, or if someone else's expertise is needed, there is an opportunity to gather this and give full answers (and perhaps put it into a presentation of sorts); time: strictly 60 minutes for the forum, so that it's short and sharp and those attending can plan their morning. Mr Mike Russell
