WINTER WHEAT VARIETIES - 2013 CROP

Issued Cooperatively by: USDA/NASS Colorado Field Office Colorado Department of Agriculture
Issued: March 4, 2013 This report provides the results of the Winter Wheat Seedings by Variety Survey, 2013 Crop, conducted by the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Colorado Field Office. The survey was funded by the Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee. Responses were tabulated from 1,054 winter wheat producers throughout Colorado covering 37 percent of the estimated 2.2 million acres seeded for the 2013 crop. The survey was not sampled to provide a direct expansion of the seeded acreage by variety or a measure of the sampling error. While a sufficient number of responses were tabulated to identify the major varieties of winter wheat for the state and major districts, the varietal percentages at the district and/or county level may not be adequately represented. Hatcher was again the most popular variety seeded in Colorado, planted on 30.0 percent of the acreage for the 2013 crop compared with 30.3 percent for the 2012 crop. Ripper continued as the second most popular variety by accounting for 8.5 percent of the acreage, down from 10.1 percent for the 2012 crop. TAM 111 also continued to hold third place for the 2013 crop by accounting for 8.1 percent of the acres seeded, below the 9.2 percent seeded for 2012. Snowmass moved up to fourth place with 5.1 percent of the acreage, significantly higher than the 3.9 percent of last year’s crop. Bill Brown slipped to fifth place with 3.9 percent of the acreage, a decrease from 5.2 percent of the acreage last year. The top five varieties accounted for 55.6 percent of the acreage seeded. The same top five varieties seeded for the 2012 crop accounted for 58.7 percent of the total acreage TAM 112 became the sixth leading variety with 3.0 percent of the acreage seeded, up from 1.3 percent and thirteenth place last year. Bond CL was essentially tied with TAM 112 in sixth place, also with 3.0 percent of the acreage, but was down from 4.3 percent last year. Winterhawk earned the eighth place ranking by accounting for 2.3 percent of the acreage seeded, up from 1.4 percent last year. Settler CL moved up one place to ninth with 2.2 percent of the acreage seeded compared with tenth place and 2.1 percent last year. AP 503 CL 2 jumped from number fifteen last year to tenth with 1.7 percent of the acreage. These 10 varieties represented 67.8 percent of the state's total acreage seeded for the 2013 crop. In 2012 the top ten varieties accounted for 72.3 percent of the total seeded acreage. Winter Wheat: Percent Planted by Variety, Colorado, 2006-13 1/ Variety
