Comic Life Lesson Description: Students will create an environmental superhero and use that hero as the main character in a comic strip. Students will learn to use a variety of technology tools and literacy skills such as characterization, plot and sequence. Depending on the grade, students can be introduced to terms such as protagonist and antagonist. Students may work individually or in teams to complete the project. Goals: 1. Students will gain a greater understanding of the environment and the issues related to protecting the earth. 2. Students will learn to plan and execute a technology‐enriched project while learning about plot, sequence and characterization. Procedure: 1. Introduce the project by asking students who their favorite superhero is. Ask them to describe the powers of that superhero as well as characteristics (funny, anti‐social, kind, etc.) 2. Use the attached template with your students to plan the comic strip. Students must also create a superhero: a. Make up a name for the superhero. b. What are his/her super powers? c. What is their personality like? Go to the Marvel Comics website and create a superhero character. http://marvel.com/create_your_own_superhero 3. Save your superhero your computer for use in the comic strip 4. Students will create a folder on their computer to store all project‐related images. Put your superhero image into this folder. 5. Find pictures online that will be appropriate backgrounds for the comic strip. Download these images into your folder. 6. Student can use Photo‐Booth to take their own picture if they want to be part of the comic. 7. Open Comic Life and choose a template for your comic strip. 8. Using the planning template as a guide, begin the comic strip. 9. When finished, students can print the comic and share it with others. 10. Students can also Export their comic as a PDF document. The teacher can collect these files and post them on a Google Doc or a Wiki for everyone to view. Make sure you have student permission forms signed if you choose to post student work online.
