Under the overall supervision of the Assistant Director-General of the Agriculture and Consumer Protection Department (AG), in close collaboration with the AG Departmental Communication Committee (DCC) and the functional guidance of the Office for Corporate Communication (OCC), the incumbent will coordinate and/or supervise departmental communication activities (publications, media relations, online communication, internal communication, multimedia production, social media, etc.) and lead the department’s promotional initiatives, activities and events including media messaging, visibility and events organization and press releases. The incumbent will also oversee and provide support to communication activities for the FAO Committee on Agriculture (COAG), the Strategic Objective Coordinators and the Strategic Objectives Teams housed in AG, the Food Chain Crisis (FCC) Coordination Unit, and in other units as appropriate. In particular, the incumbent will:        

organize, lead and coordinate a departmental network of the communication staff and consultants to achieve synergy, coherence and efficiency in the communication efforts/needs; develop and implement an integrated communication strategy (including a media plan), taking into account both FAO’s corporate communication policy and strategy and Departmental specificities; and oversee the major communication projects and initiatives of the Department; advise the Divisions on their communications efforts/needs and provide support to the Departmental Communications Team and Publications Board; oversee the design and implementation of quality control processes aligned with FAO established guidelines, procedures, and structures for communications; identify key messages, stories, events, and other opportunities to promote the work and achievements of the Department, the FAO Strategic Objectives, COAG and the special units housed in the AG Department; draft speeches/presentations, press releases, online content, etc., and create various related promotional materials; oversee pro-active and reactive media relations activities, including media monitoring and contact lists, and identify experts to answer media queries/conduct interviews; organize training and capacity building activities for AG staff and divisional communication officers in areas such as media relations, social media, strategic writing, publishing, etc., and assisted with the roll out of corporate communications tools and procedures; perform any other related duties.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Candidates should meet the following:

University degree in Journalism, Communication, Public Relations or related discipline Seven years of relevant experience in journalism, media relations or corporate communication, including experience in formulation, management and monitoring of communication plans and/or experience in the preparation and dissemination of communication and promotion material and in outreach/advocacy activities, preferably in an international environment Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or of Arabic, Chinese or Russian

SELECTION CRITERIA Candidates will be assessed against the following:

Relevance and extent of experience in communication, particularly as it relates to development, including publication, media relations, online communication and social networks; experience in journalism/media will be given special consideration Excellent communications skills in English, both orally and in writing. Working knowledge of another official language is desirable Proven and progressive track record delivering communication services to prominent organizations, particularly at the international level Ability to manage and coordinate teams and in fostering team work and building good working relationships with clients and networking Extent of knowledge in international agriculture and development, and the international development environment Experience in fund raising and external relations is desirable
