JOB DESCRIPTION – Communications Director Position: Communications Director Institution: Kanakuk Ministries Location: Branson, Missouri Exemption status: Exempt Department: Marketing Supervisor: Executive Director of Marketing Overview of Position The primary function is to lead the creative communications teams (video, web, design, PR) in implementing brand strategies. The Communications Director will shepherd and refine the overall strategy for each constituent channel and see to the production of all tactical efforts. This position will refine and communicate the brand message and manage brand awareness in the organization. The Communication Director will also take an active role in crafting the written voice of the brand. The person in this position will monitor and engage in media channels and lead internal and external partners to do the same. He/She will be familiar with all forms of social media and will be aware of the flow of information on the social network sites. He/She will respond to both positive and negative postings in a way that will positively represent Kanakuk. This person will work closely with Kanakuk’s Executive Director of Marketing to ensure consistency of message and to expand our outreach to new families, existing families, alumni and community members. Description of Duties The Communications Director is responsible for the following: (This position description may not include all of the duties required nor do the listed examples reflect the day-to-day levels of each activity of the position) • Develop and implement a strategic communications plan for both external and internal audiences, working closely with the Executive Director of Marketing to align to the overall brand strategy. This plan should include: o Proactive media relations o Social media engagements o Crisis communications o Community relations o Internal employee communications • Write and maintain content and training programs for full time, part time, and summer staff to support strategic communications plans. • Be responsible for media relations, working with senior management. • Once Kanakuk media trained, this person will be responsible for maintaining, refining, and overseeing adequate training of appropriate full-time and summer staff.

Develop and oversee implementation of a strategic plan for media buys. This plan should include: o Establishing media budget with Executive Director of Marketing o Consistent media schedules o Collection and organization of media information o Placement of media buy orders o System of budget summaries Create and direct content for social media, print and web, etc. Monitor “chatter” on social media sites and counteract or diminish negative postings whenever possible. Be responsible for refining and maintaining social media strategic planning, growth, and reporting. Be the eyes and ears of our brand and its reputation as if it were his/her own. Minute-by-minute participation in conversations that surround our content and brand, answer comments, act as a mediator. Identify threats and opportunities in user generated content surrounding our brand, report to appropriate parties. Interact with legal and outside PR firm when necessary. Provide direction, oversight, and support to Creative Content Manager and entire production team by providing strategic creative direction and content support.

Qualifications: 4+ years experience in either Client Strategy, PR Strategy, marketing leadership role or similar. Should have experience directly managing or participating in a wide range of marketing production efforts. Agency experience a plus. Other Requirements and Characteristics: The candidate for this position will exhibit great leadership skills through personal character, servant leadership style, professional behavior, and ongoing skill development. He/She should have a passion for the mission and vision of Kanakuk Ministries. This position will have ample opportunity to observe and engage in the ministry operations of both our summer and year-round programs. Other Characteristics the ideal candidate will exhibit are: • Exhibit excellent writing skills with the ability to create content that represents Kanakuk’s brand message and culture. • A self-starting, proactive work style is required. • Ability to lead in a team environment. • Understands social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, StumbleUpon, Delicious, Flickr, Forums, Twitter, Wikis, blogs, etc. • Able to understand and explain both the creative and analytical side of his/her ideas and plans and able to demonstrate and explain why his/her ideas are sound.
