Communications Officer Reports to: Senior Operations Director Salary Range: $60,000 - $70,000 Status: Full time, term position until March 31 2017 Closing Date: Open until position filled Location: Ottawa, ON

Position Summary: The Communications Officer assists with the development and timely delivery of a variety of communications initiatives that support NWAC in its public relations and publicity strategies. The incumbent is responsible for producing a variety of press releases, speeches and publications and for social media campaigning on the NWAC website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube videos that provide information and promotes NWAC and its activities. The incumbent is also responsible for building effective relationships and networks with other units within NWAC and with Indigenous and mainstream media outlets. Education, Experience and other requirements:         

Post-secondary education in Communications, Journalism, Media Relations, Public Administration, or relevant field or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience; Minimum two years’ experience working with an Indigenous organization or nonprofit organizations in a related capacity; Knowledge of NWAC and of the needs and aspirations of Indigenous women and sound knowledge of their values, culture and traditions; Demonstrates effective critical / solution / analytical thinking skills, strong organizational skills, and superior written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills; Ability to work independently under tight timeframes & with competing priorities; Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain effective networks and relationships and work as an integral member of various teams; Full comprehension, knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, WordPress, computer literacy; Knowledge and experience with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign is an asset; Flexible schedule, may have to work evenings and weekends; Native Women’s Association of Canada 1 Nicholas Street, 9th Floor, Ottawa ON K1N 7B7 Telephone 613.722.3033, Facsimile 613.722.7687 Toll-free 1.800.461.4043

Able and willing to travel; Successful completion and maintenance of a clear Police Security Check.

Language:  

Fluency in English is essential; Bilingualism is a strong asset; Knowledge of First Nation language is an asset

Responsibilities Include:        

Assists in coordinating NWAC’s promotional projects and activities, including media relations, social media campaigning, raising public awareness; Assists in organizing and coordinating public gatherings, press conferences, publicity campaigns, events and exhibits; Acts as a professional and courteous first contact in response to media inquiries and requests, escalating calls and inquiries as appropriate; Researches and writes clear, concise, professional, timely, thorough and accurate communications and publications, including media releases, media advisories, briefs, speaking notes, newsletters, and annual reports; Provides sound, timely, thorough, well-researched, well-analyzed and accurate advice on all matters relating to NWAC policies, procedures, activities and initiatives; Liaises, informs and builds effective relationships and networks with other units; Contributes skill and expertise as a member of various teams at NWAC; Other related duties as assigned.
