SUMMARY: Plans, organizes and directs the activities of the communications center within the Sheriff's Office, as designated by the Sheriff. Provides assistance to the Sheriff and 911 Board in the development and management of programs and procedures in an effort to accomplish departmental goals and policies. Ensures the efficient operation of the communications center. Supervises the operation of the communications center. Provides assistance and supervision to assigned personnel on matters concerning the daily operations of the communications center in compliance with policies, procedures, Oregon State Laws and Federal Laws. Ensures the safe and smooth operations of the communications center. NATURE AND SCOPE: This is a supervisory position with administrative responsibilities, which requires the application of management and organization principles and specialized knowledge in the area of communication methods, systems and procedures. Work may be performed in stressful situations. Incumbent is required to interpret and apply extensive knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations, which apply to situations involving the numerous aspects of the communications center. Tasks are governed by established policies, procedures, statutes and regulations. Incumbent is responsible for training and supervision of highly trained professionals in the field of 911 telecommunications and is responsible for ensuring that all agency activities are performed efficiently. Position establishes and maintains close working relationships with county officials, 911 board members, other emergency service agencies and the community in an effort to meet the needs and desires of the community and communications center. Position works under the general direction of the Sheriff and/or his designee and may receive instructions involving the administrative and/or daily operations of the communications center. Activities are reviewed for adequacy of professional judgment, compliance with policies, and achievement consistent with goals and objectives. Incumbent performs complex operations with considerable latitude for independent actions and decisions. Errors in judgment or irresponsible behavior by the incumbent or other staff members may have a major impact on the financJal situation of the department, the safety of emergency responders and/or public safety.
