Home Builders Care Presents Community Service Awards HBCF recently presented its 2014 Community Service Awards at MBIA’s Installation Dinner Meeting. This year’s Community Builder Award was presented to Mark Bennett, VicePresident of Development for Greenebaum Enterprises. Mark has over 25 years of experience and has been active in the Association for well over 20 years having always stepped up to assist, and not always for the easy volunteer jobs. Most recently, he stepped up to assist for possibly one of the biggest tasks in the Association’s foundation history to lead the completion of the Maryland Center for Housing in Maple Lawn. Over the past two years, Mark has served as CoPresident of the Building Industries Foundation. In

that capacity, Mark has donated countless hours to assist with the construction of the new building, which is owned by the Foundation and is the new MBIA headquarters. It could not have been done without his help. From the inception of the project he has played an integral part - from getting the land donated by Greenebaum to serving as an important resource throughout the process to actually taking over the full day-to-day project management of the building. On June 16, 2015, the grand opening celebration of the building took place largely thanks to his

leadership. The Tom Sawyer Award was presented to Efficient Home LLC for their leadership on the substantial renovation project at the Friendship Place Welcome Center and Clinic in Washington DC. The Welcome Center is a place where the homeless can escape from the streets. More about the extensive project can be found in our Ribbon Cutting story page 2.

The Directors Award, was presented to Jack Orrick of Linowes and Blocher LLP, a business and real estate law firm in Bethesda where he is a Partner and Chair of the firm’s Business (Continued on page 3)

Generous Businesses Join Forces with BHGH Baltimore MBIA members and other corporate volunteers joined forces with Boys Hope Girls Hope Baltimore (BHGH Baltimore) last month for a NotSo-Extreme-Makeover at the Boys Hope House. Ribbon Cutting at DC’s Homeless Drop-In Center & Clinic

Home Builders Care rebuilds in the District as

On Thursday, December 11, 2014, Friendship Place held its annual Holiday Open House. This year, the event doubled as a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Friendship Place Welcome Center. The renovation would not have been possible without the work of Home Builders Care Foundation’s HomeAid Washington DC chapter, Case Design, Efficient Home LLC and the Masco Corporation Foundation. Just north of Tenley-

town, the Welcome Center property was originally built as a single family home in 1928 and in dire need of renovation inside and out. At a total project value estimated at over $250,000, the work done included: window replacements, waterproofing, new siding, the complete replacement of the outdated boiler system with new high -efficiency mini-splits, a reconfiguration of the first floor to open up the space and better accommodate a safe flow of traffic, the replacement of all flooring, including subfloor work and the renovation of the kitchen and two bathrooms, plus more. The Welcome Center

offers case management, medical and psychiatric care, and is a place where the homeless can escape from the streets. While no overnight shelter is provided at the Welcome Center, it is a primary point of outreach for numerous homeless clients. In 2014, the Center provided over 700 primary care consultations and more than 300 psychiatric consultations. Home Builders Care/ HomeAidDC is thankful to MBIA member Efficient Home LLC for stepping up to serve as builder captain. Another MBIA member Charles A. Klein & Sons helped with the HVAC and Masco provided cabinets.

Kitchen Renovation at Seneca Heights Apartments Located in Gaithersburg, the Seneca Heights Apartment Complex serves as permanent housing for 40 formerly homeless single adults and 17 families. A former EconoLodge, the facility was renovated to provide single-room occupancy housing thanks to a Montgomery County publicprivate partnership effort, led by the Coalition for the Homeless in 2004. After 10 years of heavy use, the kitchens of the 17

family units are to be renovated. A significant portion of the project funding has been secured from a Federal

Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), but in order to move the project forward other assistance is needed. Home Builders Care has stepped up to provide assistance and will be supplying all appliances.

Charles County Group Homes for the Disabled Renovated & Celebrated In December, Spring Dell Center and HBCF celebrated the completion of exterior makeovers at two Waldorf area group homes. The construction value was $50,000. For over 15 years the two organizations have had the opportunity to build a relationship through the development of a handful of group home renovation projects, but according to Spring Dell Center staff nothing of this magnitude. Seventy five percent of residents in one renovated house are in wheelchairs and found it difficult to maneuver into the homes with ease. Others found that their homes needed costly updates. Each house received a number of extensive exterior improvements

spanning over several months. Wise Choice Construction, LLC and Alside/ Revere Building Products provided in-kind donations of building materials with support from MBIA’s Charles County Chapter. After completion of the home, a ribbon cutting showcased the renovation projects. The event included words from HBCF President Liza Bowles of Newport Partners; MBIA’s Charles County Chapter Chairperson Doug Meeker of Elm Street Development; and MBIA’s Vice President of Government Affairs Marcus Jackson, as well as Spring Dell Center’s Executive Director Donna Retzlaff. Also in attendance were commu-

nity members, Spring Dell Center staff and those most affected by the upgrades, the homes residents. Currently Spring Dell Center, an agency dedicated to assisting individuals with disabilities in achieving their highest level of independence, provides residential programs supporting 51 individuals in 20 homes throughout the Waldorf and La Plata areas.

Two Housing Unlimited Townhomes to Receive Upgrades

“We‘re very proud of the relationship, meeting the residents is something special and seeing how people really need the space. This is an opportunity for us to give back, the builders the suppliers, the manufacturers, all the people who contribute engineering and other things. They do a lot of volunteering to make these projects possible.” - HBCF

Since 1991, Housing Unlimited (HUI) has provided affordable, independent housing solutions for adults in mental health recovery in Montgomery County. For many of those years, HBCF has provided HUI with longstanding support and in-kind contributions on a number

of renovation projects at their many homes, now numbering 59. Starting in a few weeks, two of HUI’s townhomes in Rockville will be receiving much-needed flooring improvements thanks to MBIA Member HD Supply and Home Builders Care. HBCF

Board Member Mike Karns of Winchester Homes is helping push the project towards completion. “We are honored to receive HBCF support and look forward to working with HD Supply,” commented HUI Executive Director Abe Schuchman.

Transactions Group. Time and time again, Jack has demonstrated his personal commitment to helping his clients and community thrive. He has served as President of the Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington, General Counsel for Housing Unlimited, and, of course was a long-time board member and executive committee member of the Home Builders Care Foundation.

A board member since 2000, under his counsel, HBCF has established subsidiaries, set up public-private partnerships with several agencies, ratified construction agreements, procured government-associated funding, contracted with trades, and

of course merged with the Building Industries Foundation. Not to mention his leadership in helping HBCF earn the Seal of Excellence for nonprofit management. The HBCF Board of Directors is honored to recognize the dedication of MBIA members like Mark, Rich, Tony and Jack for their community service. We cannot do what we do without the direct contributions and efforts of key supporters like you! Thank you!
