DIRECTOR OF BUILDINGS / GROUNDS Mr. Peter Scheppmann

Members of the High School Forensics Team

From the Superintendent’s Desk Greetings, The recent school shooting tragedy in Florida along with numerous safety threat concerns regionally have schools reviewing their emergency preparedness. We have invested a significant amount of time into discussing, revising, and improving our existing crisis response plans and would like to provide a general overview of our approach should we face an emergency situation. Our schools have two goals in the event of an emergency or disaster situation: (1) to keep our students safe; and (2) to keep families and the community informed with accurate information. We Kevin Bruggink take these responsibilities very seriously. Our school safety plan includes response protocols to a wide variety of situations that, although unlikely, could occur in our schools. In addition to collaborating with local and regional school organizations, we have worked closely with the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department, as well as our local fire department, around best practice in keeping our schools safe. Staff have been trained in response protocols and each classroom has a crisis response binder that contains concise directions on how to respond to various events, including severe weather, natural disaster, lockdowns, and evacuations. Our district crisis response team has clearly defined roles including counseling, communication, facilities coordination, and response leadership. We have identified crisis response service locations and review and update our safety plan binders annually. Typically these updates include location and staffing changes, while we also review procedures to ensure we are following the most appropriate steps in each situation. Recently, we met with Oostburg Fire Department officials to discuss adjustments during regular fire drills so we can ensure that when a fire alarm sounds the hallways are safe from intruders. Small changes can make a large difference, and we remain thankful for the cooperation and time from our local emergency personnel. We do not share all of our specific emergency protocols with all stakeholders primarily due to the possibility that someone attempting to do harm to someone in the schools could use our procedures to increase danger to our students. Our schools are made more secure through an access control system which includes cameras at main entrances and strategic positions to cover primary corridors, common spaces, and other areas of concern. If you have visited our buildings you recognize that you are asked to “buzz in” while a monitor in the office allows us to see who is at the door before we grant access. Our most recent discussions have focused on controlling movement through buildings using corridor partitions. Our new elementary school addition has an advanced version of this approach which includes doors that automatically swing closed and lock when an emergency pull station is tripped in our office. Law enforcement leadership also has the ability to access our security cameras so they can isolate the location of a threat and respond more quickly. Our student information system, Infinite Campus, allows staff to easily access student information. It allows staff members with login credentials from each building to pull up attendance information, contact information and remote messaging. This allows us to focus on reunification should there be a concern which results in evacuation of our buildings. We will continue to keep parents informed as our safety protocol procedures evolve so that each family can be confident that their child is in a school with sound procedures in case of an emergency. We encourage parents to contact us should they have questions or concerns. These contacts can help us in our goal of keeping all students, staff, and guests safe in our schools. Kevin Bruggink, Superintendent.

OHS Forensics… (From page 1.) Last year, Oostburg School District brought Forensics back after a 10 year hiatus. This year, students continued to grow and develop their skills. All students who participated in the District competition in March qualified for state. The coaches, Tamala Szyman and Avery Leidall, look forward to the state competition with the students, and to seeing the team continue to grow in the years to come.

Congratulations to Wendy DenBoer and Mari Kretz on their reelection to the Oostburg School Board. The fact that they ran unopposed speaks to the respect and trust our community has for our board. Thank you to all the board members for their time and support of the Oostburg Public Schools.

EARTH DAY Project: Band Instrument Recycling In honor of “Earth Day” in April, the Oostburg Parents Music Club (OPMC) is sponsoring a “Band Instrument Recycling Week” from April 23-27. If you have a gently used and still playable (or nearly playable) band instrument taking up space in your home that you would like to donate to the Oostburg School District Band program, please drop it off at the OHS main office during school hours, 7:30-3:30, M-F, Apr. 23 -27 or before/after the Spring Concerts on May 7 and May 14. If you are unable to drop it off or have questions, please call Jill Hanes at 920-564-2383 x2207, and leave a message with your name, phone number, and best time to contact you. If you know the value of the instrument, you may ask for a donation receipt to use for your 2018 income tax preparation. (We are unable to estimate an instrument’s value ourselves, so please contact a reputable music store for assistance.) Donated instruments will be used by band students in Gr. 6-12, with priority given to students with financial need. We believe EVERYONE should be in band and EVERYONE should have access to an instrument! Please help us, if you can! Thank you!
