Community Development and Sustainability Intern – Planning Department Summer 2014 The City of Victor, ID seeks a dynamic, creative and well-rounded Urban Planning student to work on a variety of sustainability and community development projects during Summer 2014 Live and work at the base of the Teton Mountain Range in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem - the last intact ecosystem in the northern hemisphere. Work alongside the City Planner (a graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s BUP program) to enhance and protect the natural assets and sense of place in the wake of the housing boom/bust cycle. The internship will expose the student to current and historic issues and challenges of Planning in the West/Rocky Mountain West including smart growth, regional planning for sustainable economic and community development, water resource management and water rights, and bridging gaps between diverse populations. Successful completion of this internship will result in a foundation of knowledge in Planning in the West.

Qualifications: Candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Geography or related program. The ideal candidate will have a passion for sustainability and inclusive community development and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. An interest in graphic design / planning graphics / cartography demonstrated through proficiency in Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator/In Design, ArcGIS, SketchUp (or other modeling software) is desired.

Work description: During the internship you'll have the opportunity to gain experience in a wide variety of short-range and long-range planning tasks. Major Projects The City of Victor is one of 16 partners in the Western Greater Yellowstone Consortium, which was awarded a $1.5 million dollar Sustainable Communities grant from HUD in 2011; the outcome of the grant is a Regional Plan for Sustainable Development for a region that spans four counties in two states and encompasses Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, Bridger-Teton and Caribou-Targhee National Forests, and the Jedediah Smith Wilderness Area. The grant wraps up in January 2015 and during the time of your internship you will have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of regional sustainability planning and contribute to grant initiatives including: 

Form Based Code / Model Code for Sustainable Development, assist with public outreach, staff review and editing, and implementation of a new zoning code for the City of Victor based on the Greater Yellowstone Framework for Sustainable Development (a Northern Rocky Mountain adaptation of LEED)

 

Regional Housing Needs Assessment, assist with local outreach for the demographic survey for the Regional Analysis of Impediments Island Park Futures Study, assist with committee duties for the study analyzing the pros and cons of a National Monument designation for the Island Park Caldera

The City of Victor is also engaged with the Sonoran Institute, Strong Towns, and the nearby cities of Driggs and Tetonia to develop a process for identifying small scale, high impact economic development projects driven by the community and based on the "lighter-quicker-cheaper" approach. This project will kick off mid-April and will take place during the internship. Other tasks        

Public outreach and engagement via social media, public meetings and community events Creation of planning graphics (GIS mapping, graphic design, 3D modeling) Research of innovative and best practices for placemaking and community engagement Preparing materials (staff reports, graphics) for Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council meetings Researching grant funding for placemaking, public art, business incubators, etc Assisting with updating the Comprehensive Plan Assisting with review and processing of permit applications

Relocation/living in Teton Valley: The City of Victor offers a competitive wage and will assist the summer intern in securing housing for the duration of the internship. It is possible to live and work in Victor, ID without a car. Regional public transportation exists. The City of Victor can also arrange transportation to and from the airports in Jackson, WY and Idaho Falls, ID. The City of Victor is surrounded by public land (Caribou-Targhee National Forest and Bureau of Land Management) that is walking/biking distance from town. Grand Teton National Park is approximately 1 hour away by car and Yellowstone National Park approximately 2 hours away by car. Camping and hundreds of miles of hiking trails and gravel road/forest service biking opportunities exist just outside of city limits and there is a "rails to trails" network. The nearby Teton River and the Henry's Fork of the Snake River are world renowned with world class fly fishing; kayaking, white water rafting and floating the river are great on summer days. Summer is peak season in Teton Valley and concerts, festivals and community events in Victor, at nearby Grand Targhee Resort, throughout Teton Valley and in Jackson, WY abound. Victor, ID is home to excellent locally owned restaurants, two brew pubs, outdoor gear shops and a bicycle shop with coffee bar, a grocery store, several biodynamic organic farms, and a diverse array of religious congregations. Jackson, WY is approximately a half hour drive by car and has all of the retail chain stores you would expect in a mid-sized city.
