Melbourne: Community Organising Volunteer Fellowship Position Description Join a supportive and energised cohort of other emerging social change professionals who are working to protect the web of life across Australia. ACF acknowledges the structural barriers that make gaining experience in any field of work more difficult for many communities in Australia. We highly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from CALD backgrounds, LGBTIQA+ people and others who may face structural barriers in our society to apply for this opportunity.

About the Australian Conservation Foundation: The Australian Conservation Foundation is Australia’s national environment organisation – over half a million people creating a world where forests, rivers, people and wildlife thrive. A handful of people formed ACF 50 years ago when mining first threatened the Great Barrier Reef. Now the ACF community has grown into a powerful force for nature. We bring together people from community, government and business. Our community advocates against pollution and destruction, and for our living world. We hold decision makers to account. We champion big ideas and find common ground with unlikely partners. We love and protect the web of life right across our continent, from the Kimberley to the reef, down the Great Dividing Range to Tasmania’s forests. People power our campaigns. We are proudly independent, non-partisan and funded by donations from our community.

About the ACF Fellowship program: The ACF Fellowship program is a structured learning and volunteering opportunity for emerging social change professionals. The Fellowship program offers an opportunity to develop skills and get hands-on experience. The program is suited for driven, passionate and committed people who represent the diversity in our communities, not just people who have skills in the areas outlined in the position descriptions. Through the ACF Fellowship, you’ll be part of a supportive workplace where you can: ●

Learn from cutting edge campaigning, fundraising, organising, media and communications experts;

Develop and apply your skills in a volunteer placement and;

Regularly reflect on your practise with other fellows in your cohort.

At its heart, the ACF Fellowship is a structured learning program over six months developing the skills of future social change professionals in a supportive environment. The learning framework for this placement includes: ●

A comprehensive induction program on all aspects of a social change organisation o

Intensive bootcamp: Thursday 31 May to Saturday 2 June

o

Organisational induction: Monday 4 June to Tuesday 5 June

Regular training on topics like the history of the environment movement in Australia, interview and job application skills in the sector, activist self-care, and cutting edge practise in campaigning, fundraising, organising and communication.

Reflective sessions with your cohort on a fortnightly basis, including ‘campaign clinics’ where you solicit feedback on a work problem.

Applied learning through your volunteer placement.

About the volunteer role: The ACF Fellowship program includes role placements across skills and fields. This role will sit within the Campaigns Directorate, in the Community Organising team. The purpose of this volunteer fellowship is to build the scope and capacity of the Community Organising team in Melbourne as well as provide hands-on learning opportunities.

Volunteer responsibilities may include: •

Assisting in recruiting teams of volunteers to help support and grow the ACF community.

Hours: The hours are ideally 15 hours per week (2 days). The set days are negotiable, to be arranged between the volunteer and relevant supervisor, however normal business hours are from 9am to 5pm, between Monday and Friday, with up to an hour for lunch. It is strongly encouraged to volunteer at least one of the same days as the rest of the fellowship cohort during the week to take full advantage of the fellowship learning structure. Reasonable travel and accommodation costs for interstate trips will be reimbursed as per the agreement.

Location: The normal place of volunteering will be at 60 Leicester Street, Carlton. However, depending on the nature of the role the volunteer is undertaking, some tasks may be carried out flexibly offsite, with the prior approval of the supervisor.

Resources: ACF will provide resources necessary for the volunteer to perform the main tasks.

Duration: The Community Organising Volunteer Fellowship position is a voluntary commitment. The volunteer position is for a negotiable period of six months from June to December 2018. Volunteer roles within ACF are typically either ongoing, meaning they occur throughout the full year, or part-time seasonal and recur on an annual basis.

Why does this role matter? The community organising program at ACF is rapidly expanding. We have a plan to have 40 community groups, with hundreds of volunteer leaders by mid-2019. To achieve these goals, we need to scale up our training and recruitment activities. The added capacity that a fellow would bring to the team will allow us to do met goals and continue to build a strong and diverse movement in Victoria. Developing leadership in our movement is essential for us to move toward the future we want. We have a challenge – we need to Stop Adani and transition out of coal and into clean energy. Our choice is to build a diverse social movement capable of shifting politics in our favour.

It is important to note... ACF’s Fellowship program is a volunteer placement. ACF does not offer employment following the program. By signing up to this program, you agree to ACF’s policies and procedures.

Direction and Contact: The Community Organising Volunteer Fellowship position in Melbourne will be asked to carry out duties under the direction of and report to Max Smith, Community Organiser.
