HEPATITIS B COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROJECT

Community Partnership Grant Recipients   This document lists each of the 40 projects funded under the Hepatitis B Community Education Project by state or territory – the application period closed on 31 March 2016.

Hepatitis ACT

The ACT Hepatitis B Community Education Project 2016-17

This project will harness relationships, approaches, arrangements and key learnings established through Hepatitis ACT’s 2015 and 2016 pilot hepatitis B education program for people from CALD backgrounds. Hepatitis ACT will engage with priority populations during 2016-2017 via migrant English classes, community groups and events, and CALD students undertaking training to work in the community sector with people from CALD backgrounds.

Hepatitis ACT will engage with priority populations during 2017-2018 via migrant English classes, community groups and events, and CALD students undertaking training to work in the community sector with people from CALD backgrounds.

This project will extend Hepatitis ACT’s 2015 and 2016 pilot hepatitis B education program for people from CALD backgrounds into Indigenous communities during 2016-17. The Project will harness the relationships, approaches, arrangements and key learnings established through the pilot program and other collaborative ventures. Hepatitis ACT will engage with priority populations via community groups and events and partner with established Indigenous projects and organisations.

Hepatitis NSW 

Hepatitis B Specific Grants: Tell Your Story – Digital Storytelling for Chinese Communities

Hepatitis NSW will engage with community partners to run a series of digital story telling workshops for people from Chinese backgrounds. The project aims to develop a number of culturally appropriate online digital resources (on www.hep.org.au and across social media platforms) to engage with priority populations to increase knowledge on hepatitis B (transmission, testing, regular monitoring and treatment).

Hepatitis NSW will work with five community partners to deliver hepatitis B-focused community education to Chinese communities across particular Sydney metropolitan areas. The project will also organise four community forums per year where education on hepatitis B will be delivered. Point of care testing for hepatitis B will be provided as an in-kind contribution by the partners where possible.

Hepatitis NSW will work with five community partners to deliver hepatitis B-focused community education to Korean communities across particular Sydney metropolitan areas. Hepatitis NSW will work with community stakeholders to support NSW community organisations and health agencies with grants to deliver evidence-based education activities for their communities. This project is based on a previously successful collaboration between Hepatitis NSW and the Cancer Council NSW, which offered community grants for hepatitis B-specific education activities during NSW Hepatitis Awareness Week 2015, and the success of the NSW Going Viral youth-focussed HCV transmission prevention project partnership with five NSW Local Health Districts.

Hepatitis NSW will work with the Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council of NSW, to support NSW Aboriginal Community Control Health Services (ACCHS’s) and other Aboriginal health services with grants to deliver evidence-based education activities for their Aboriginal communities. This project is based on a previously successful collaboration between Hepatitis NSW and the Cancer Council NSW, which offered community grants for hepatitis B-specific education activities, and the success of the NSW Going Viral youth-focussed HCV transmission prevention project partnership with five NSW Local Health Districts.

Project Name

Description

NTAHC

Hepatitis B Community Education Roadshow to Katherine Indigenous Communities

This project will deliver Hepatitis B information, education, health promotion and workforce development in the Northern Territory top end. The Northern Territory AIDS and Hepatitis Council (NTAHC) will extend previous workforce development and education with key services and attend events and days of significance to raise awareness of hepatitis B risks, testing, treatment and prevention. The community education activities will be conducted with clinical staff on hand for testing and management (supported by in-kind contribution from community stakeholders). Young champions and members of women’s and men’s group will also be identified for hepatitis B education training in their local languages.

B Side Project - Increase awareness of Hepatitis B by music, multimedia story board and social media campaign for Indigenous People in the NT

NTAHC will work with community partners to compose a song and multi-media video with spoken word narrative in four commonly spoken Aboriginal languages and other languages other than English (from groups with high rates of Hepatitis B within the Northern Territory). The song, multimedia clip and spoken narratives will be published on social media networks and focus on: 1. Encouraging testing of HBV to establish an individual’s status 2. Creating awareness of treatment for chronic hepatitis B 3. Encouraging those with HBV to obtain appropriate management.

NTAHC

Melaleuca CALD Hepatitis B Community Education Project – Darwin

This project will deliver culturally competent Hepatitis B resources to priority populations from refugee backgrounds (asylum seekers, humanitarian arrivals and their families) and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations. In collaboration, NTHAC and Melaleuca will educate to improve HBV health literacy through the adaptation and translation of appropriate materials, specifically an interactive resource ‘The Hep B Story’ for the identified priority populations. A collaborative approach will also be adopted with health service providers and community members to enhance linkages for referral and support between clinical services, public health providers and community based agencies working with the priority populations to create more sustainable HBV health outcomes.

Hepatitis QLD

Brisbane South PHN Chinese and Vietnamese Community Education Project

Hepatitis Queensland will conduct a range of culturally-appropriate targeted community education activities in localities conducive to broad community participation. This will strengthen long-term partnerships within the community and improve relevant health literacy. In addition, the project will provide outreach at high-profile community festivals and events including Chinese New Year celebrations, BrisAsia festival, and Vietnamese Lunar New Year. These will feature initiatives to provide on-the-spot education, including one-on-one and group discussions, games, stalls, and food. An awareness campaign will also be conducted with local media (including radio, language newspapers, newsletters etc.) and community services.

QLD Sub-Saharan Africa HBV Community Education Short Films Project

Hepatitis Queensland will work with the priority populations and affected community to produce a number of culturally appropriate and targeted community education short films on hepatitis B (to be promoted via DVD and online social media). The project will include consultation with community leaders to ensure that the films produced are relevant and address the need in the community. An awareness campaign will also be conducted, building on existing relationships with local media (radio, language newspapers, newsletters etc.) and community services to promote the project, and the films produced.

QLD South-East Asian Community and SubSaharan African Community English Literacy Resources Project

Hepatitis Queensland will work with community partners in the priority populations to provide education and translated educational resources to students studying Basic Learning English courses at Tertiary Educational Facilities. The project will also involve development of an English low literacy resource to complement the translated resource and a social media campaign aimed at students utilising the newly developed resources.

Torres and Cairns Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hepatitis B Community Education Project

Northern Peninsula and Cairns ATSI Hepatitis B Community Education Project

Hepatitis Queensland will work with community partners in the Northern Peninsula and Cairns to conduct a range of culturally-appropriate targeted community education activities in localities conducive to broad community participation. This will strengthen long-term partnerships within the community and improve relevant health literacy. In addition, the project will provide outreach at high-profile community festivals and events including National Aboriginal and Islanders' Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) week and other festivals. An awareness campaign will also be conducted with local media (including radio, language newspapers, newsletters etc.) and community services and a range of culturally appropriate resources will be developed and distributed.

Brisbane South PHN Sub-Saharan African Community Education Project

Within the Brisbane South Primary Health Network, Hepatitis Queensland will conduct a range of culturally-appropriate targeted community education activities in localities conducive to broad community participation. This will strengthen long-term partnerships within the community and improve relevant health literacy. In addition, the project will provide outreach at high-profile community festivals and events including Africa Day Festival and WELCOMEFest multicultural festival. These will feature initiatives to provide onthe-spot education, including one-on-one and group discussions, games and quizzes, stalls, and food. An awareness campaign will also be conducted with local media (including radio, language newspapers, newsletters etc.) and community services.

QLD HBV Positive Speakers Community Education Project

This project will recruit and train hepatitis B positive people into the Qld positive Speakers Bureau (QPSB). Hepatitis Queensland will conduct activities and events to improve community knowledge and understanding of hepatitis B (transmission, testing, clinical management) and introduce the QPSB to the affected population. Events will be supported by Hepatitis Queensland, the QPSB, and local clinical/community services. An advertising and awareness campaign will also be conducted, working with local media and services. An additional benefit of the project is enhancement of a peer-led support network to mentor new speakers.

Hepatitis SA

Hepatitis B Community Education Project – South Australian Filipino Community

Hepatitis SA will work with community partners to develop, implement and evaluate hepatitis B community education and awareness raising activities in the South Australian Filipino community. Project activities will include: an awareness-raising event at the Filipino community festival; community education sessions in the Northern, Western and Southern suburbs of Adelaide; a media strategy (including Filipino radio and Facebook); rural visits to Murray Bridge, Port Pirie and Port Lincoln and culturally appropriate, low literacy HBV resources and promotional items.

Hepatitis B Community Education Project – Chinese Community in Adelaide

Hepatitis SA will collaborate with several community partners to develop, implement and evaluate hepatitis B community education and awareness raising activities in the Chinese community in Adelaide. Project activities will include: developing culturally appropriate bilingual print and online resources in consultation with the Chinese community; education and information sessions to be provided using various engagement strategies appropriate to this community; and broad awareness raising.

Hepatitis B Community Education Project – Vietnamese Community in Adelaide

In conjunction with community partners, Hepatitis SA will develop, implement and evaluate hepatitis B community education and awareness raising activities targeting the Vietnamese community living in the western and northern suburbs of Adelaide. Project activities will include: training of Vietnamese volunteers to assist project staff engaging the community; provision of community hepatitis B education activities with participation by a local GP/viral hepatitis nurse; a Vietnamese community event; development of a HBV resource following community consultations; Vietnamese media around HBV awareness; and dissemination of information on relevant clinical and support services.

Hepatitis B Community Education Project – African Communities in Adelaide

Hepatitis SA will work with community partners to design, implement and evaluate hepatitis B community education and awareness raising activities targeting 6 African communities living in the western and northern suburbs of Adelaide. Project activities will include: engaging an African positive speaker from interstate (if available); community hepatitis B education sessions; hepatitis B awareness raising during a community festival; hepatitis B information and stories developed for media; a hepatitis B information resource developed in collaboration with the communities to ensure relevant content and format; and a community based resource launch held at the completion of the project.

Hepatitis B Community Education Project – pregnant women with HBV/young parents in the Chinese community in Adelaide

In partnership with community stakeholders, Hepatitis SA will develop, implement and evaluate hepatitis B education and support activities for pregnant women with HBV and, more broadly, young parents in the Chinese community in Adelaide. Project activities will include training of project staff and community volunteers, education sessions for young parents and information resources that are culturally appropriate.

TasCAHRD

Hepatitis B Community Education Project for MSM communities in Tasmania

The Tasmanian Council on AIDS, Hepatitis and Related Diseases (TasCAHRDs) will work with community partners to increase the hepatitis B health literacy among men who are men who have sex with men and strengthen the networks of services relevant to the target group. Development and implementation will be peer-based, reaching a diverse target audience and linking them with clinical services. The project will roll out a health promotion campaign via online, print and broadcast media as well as community education sessions (in neighbourhood houses in remote areas). It will produce a number of resources which will be available beyond the life of the project including human library books, podcasts, animations and an interactive website.

Hepatitis B Community Education Project for CALD Communities in Tasmania

This project aims to increase the hepatitis B health literacy among CALD communities and strengthen the networks of services relevant to the target group. The project will reach a diverse target audience linking them with clinical services. TasCAHRD will utilise a number of different engagement strategies including participation in community events and information sessions. Most importantly, the project will link closely with and train bi-cultural workers who are already working in their communities. It will produce a number of resources which will be available beyond the life of the project including human library books, podcasts, animations and pictorials.

Hepatitis Victoria

Vietnamese in Conversation

This project will embed a hepatitis B peer education model in the Vietnamese community in Victoria by working in partnership with community organisations and relevant city councils in recruiting, educating, resourcing and supporting peer educators. Aside from recruiting peer educators, Hepatitis Victoria will develop the resources to be used by the peer educators in their education sessions. The resources that are developed will be written in Vietnamese, take into consideration the cultural needs of the Vietnamese population, and be available to peer educators and community partners to utilise in hard and soft copies. Such collaboration and support will ensure the efficiency and sustainability of the model even after the project ends in June 2018.

Hepatitis Victoria

Hepatitis B Assertive Outreach to People who Inject Drugs

Hepatitis Victoria will work with community partners to develop and deliver best practice hepatitis B education materials that increase awareness on the need for hepatitis B vaccination among unvaccinated adults. The focus of this project will be on those at higher risk of infection i.e. people with a history of injecting drugs or who have sexual contact with people who inject drugs (PWID). The project will provide the newly developed health education materials to organisations that have daily contact with this population including needle and syringe programs and primary health care services for PWID in Melbourne.

Hepatitis Victoria

Little HepB Hero

In collaboration with community partners and arts and media professionals, Hepatitis Victoria will create a concept storyboard to be presented in a digital or hard copy format (book, animation and video vignette) for educating children about hepatitis B. As a tool it will provide guidance to young children who are in contact with someone such as a parent or caregiver or other children who are living with hepatitis B, or if they have it themselves. This project will also provide a means for parents and children to share information and their feelings.

Hepatitis Victoria

Raising Profile among Recent Arrivees

This project will identify relevant and appropriate ways to raise awareness of hepatitis B within the Afghani community (one of the community's most vulnerable groups of migrant and refugee communities). Hepatitis Victoria will incorporate models of community participation, and address barriers to Afghani communities receiving health information, by collaborating with local multicultural organisations and community leaders, and by sourcing the support of culturally appropriate language facilitators, to deliver information in community settings. A working group will be formed to assist in developing culturally appropriate resources and identifying Afghani community volunteers to be trained as educators. In addition, the lessons learned during the project implementation will be applied to other newly arrived migrant/refugee communities.

Hepatitis Victoria

Collaborating in Melbourne’s West

This project will provide an integrated system response between: primary health care providers; community health services; and the hospital sector, to provide a streamlined service to those affected by hepatitis B. In addition, the affected community will be engaged in the project to raise levels of health literacy and ensure they are met with a culturally appropriate response from clinical services. Hepatitis Victoria will establish a clinical reference group that will be informed by the recommendations of a consumer reference group. The consumer reference group will provide feedback on the provision of culturally appropriate services, as well as ensuring that resources that are developed are created with an appropriate level of health literacy for the represented community. The consumer reference group will be able to identify community leaders and pathways for providing information back to individual cultural groups.

Hepatitis Victoria

HepAware in Melbourne’s South East

Hepatitis Victoria will establish a working group to coordinate a collaborative approach to raising awareness of hepatitis B, and support World Hepatitis Day events in 2016 and 2017, in the South East of Melbourne. Project activities will include: an event for World Hepatitis Day 2016 with community partners; focus groups with stakeholders around awareness raising of Hepatitis B and service integration especially for those from a CALD background; and a number of events around World Hepatitis Day in 2017 to raise awareness of hepatitis B.

Hepatitis Victoria

Hepatitis B Education for Aboriginal people in custody

In consultation with Aboriginal communities, Hepatitis Victoria will develop a training module to enhance understanding of hepatitis B generally and to specifically increase awareness of prevention, diagnosis and management of hepatitis B for people in custody in Victoria. Training will be delivered at selected sites with the aim that participants completing the program will be positioned to use their resulting skills in the role of Aboriginal Prison Peer Educators specifically for Aboriginal people in custody.

Perth Northern Multicultural Hepatitis B Project (Year 1)

This project will target communities from Asian, African and Middle Eastern backgrounds. HepatitisWA will utilise existing community partnerships and collaborations (and identify other potential collaborations) to provide Healthy Liver workshops and education for the targeted communities. These workshops and education sessions will focus on hepatitis B transmission and prevention, along with aiming to mobilise participants to be tested and/or vaccinated, monitored and treated as required. HepatitisWA will provide a monthly outreach testing and vaccination clinic to people who have attended the workshops.

HepatitisWA in partnership with the Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services will work with a range of community services to provide education to targeted community members and workforce development for community service providers. The primary avenues for engagement will be prisons, community services and sport, brief interventions, group work, art workshops, as well as community and sporting events.

This project will be based in Broome and target primarily Aboriginal men over 18 years of age. HepatitisWA in partnership with the Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services will work with a range of community services to provide education to targeted community members and workforce development for community service providers. The primary avenues for engagement will be prisons, community services and sport, brief interventions, group work, art workshops, as well as community and sporting events.

Perth Southern Multicultural Hepatitis B Project (Year 1)

This project will target communities identified as having a high prevalence of hepatitis B (i.e. Chinese, Vietnamese, Philippines, Burmese, Sudanese, Malaysian, Indonesian, Thai, Indian, South Korean and Afghani). HepatitisWA will utilise existing partnerships and collaborations (and identify other potential collaborations) to provide Healthy Liver workshops and education that is appropriately translated. The education will focus on hepatitis B transmission and prevention and mobilising participants to be tested and/or vaccinated, monitored and treated as required.
