COMMUNITY UPDATE HIGHLAND PARK RENOVATION This year, the City of Richmond Heights will be completely renovating Highland Park, located at 1250 Highland Terrace. The original playground was installed in 1998 and, since then, the City has been saving for its replacement. With those funds, the City will match a grant from the St. Louis County Municipal Park Grant Commission to renovate the entire park. The current playground is being donated to Kids Around the World, a not-forprofit corporation that performs mission work in over 60 countries around the globe. With the help of volunteers, the playground will be dismantled, refurbished, shipped overseas, and reassembled in communities impacted by war, poverty, disease, or natural disasters. Proposed improvements to the park include replacing the playground, picnic tables, trash cans, drinking fountain and irrigation system and adding a spray feature, outdoor fitness equipment, reading area, new sidewalks, and

VETERANS MEMORIAL COMMITTEE MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVATION On Thursday, May 24, 2018, at 5:30 pm, the Veterans Memorial Committee will host a Memorial Day Observation at the Mid-County Veterans Gazebo at THE HEIGHTS at 8001 Dale Avenue. Special recognition will be given to Navy veterans, but ALL veterans are invited to attend. In addition, a memorial paver will be dedicated to Navy Veteran Richard F. Provaznik, who served during the Korean War era from 1951-53. After leaving the Navy, Mr. Provaznik became a lawyer, was Mayor of Richmond Heights, and President of the Missouri Municipal League. He was later appointed Judge of the Circuit Court of St. Louis County.

CENTENNIAL OF ARMISTICE DAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1918-2018 World War I, called ‘The War To End All Wars’, ended one hundred years ago. The Veterans Memorial Committee wishes to honor those from our community who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Six soldiers from Richmond Heights were killed in action; most of them now have streets named after them, such as Goff, Winzenberg, Lile, Rupert, and Gray. A plaque at the VFW Post 3500 on Big Bend Blvd (originally located at the cannon memorial on Arlington Drive) honors those who served in WWI. Those listed include James C. and Lester O’Keefe, sons of Richmond Heights’ first mayor, James O’Keefe. View the entire list below. The Veterans Memorial Committee asks descendants of those listed to please reach out so you can join us as we honor your loved ones at this year’s special November event. Please contact Mary Binns at Richmond Heights City Hall at 314.655.3504, via email at [email protected] or through the online form at www.vetsmemorial.org.

THE BOOK PROJECT, SUMMER READING, & MORE A local parent group, The Book Project, has donated a collection of picture books to the Richmond Heights Memorial Library. This collection features a diverse array of characters from various ethnicities. Characters also represent a wide array of physical and sensory disabilities. Among the authors included in the collection are several nationally recognized award-winners such as Julius Lester and Grace Lin, plus additional emerging children’s book authors, and even a local author. “There is a group of moms in the community (many of which are MRH ECC parents) that are working on a project to donate children’s books that feature characters/protagonists with diverse backgrounds (people of color, people with disabilities, immigrants/refugees) and/or have themes of inclusion/social justice to area libraries.” --Noah Briscoe of The Book Project The Book Project has put together a brochure stating their mission o foster inclusion by sharing diverse literature with young children and featuring the books’ titles. This brochure, ‘Stories With Diverse Titles to Share With Your Preschooler’, is available in the Children’s Library at the Richmond Heights Memorial library. The Summer Reading Theme for this year is ‘Libraries Rock!’ where we combine a love of reading with a love of music and the arts! There are programs for adults, teens, children and babies. Registration begins May 29! This year’s program includes incentives sponsored by: COCA, The Fabulous Fox Theatre, The Kranzberg Arts Foundation, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and more!
