Distributed catalog structure for protection and scalability Employs a distributed catalog structure which eliminates the catalog-scale design constraint due to catalog backup / restore concerns • Veritas NetBackup employs a legacy catalog architecture requiring backup of the catalog to ensure disaster recovery. (Veritas NetBackup™ Administrator's Guide, Volume I, UNIX, Windows, and Linux, Release 8.0) 3. Commvault OnePass backup and archive to eliminate operational impact & management time A single, low-impact scan that incorporates protection, retention, reporting and access for growing file system and email environments • Veritas backup and archiving processes are delivered through separate products (NetBackup and Enterprise Vault) Each performs a separate pass of the data. NBU can archive file system data while performing the backup process. 4. Integrated Global source and target side Deduplication: Deduplicate data across the environment to maximize storage savings. • Veritas NetBackup MSDP deduplication within each node is supported; deduplication between nodes is not supported. (Veritas NetBackup™ Deduplication Guide Documentation version: 8.0). Deduplication is limited to 64TB or 96TB in a media server node with no failover capabilities. (NetBackup supports 96 TBs of storage in a single MSDP on SUSE Linux systems, per Veritas NetBackup™ Release Notes, Release 8.0). It can provide load balancing through the addition of additional servers helping a deduplication node. For NetBackup Appliances, MSDP offers up to the maximum available capacity on a 52xx and 5330 appliance. Integrated hardware and software Snapshot Management supporting heterogeneous arrays  Leverage snapshot technology across leading heterogeneous arrays to improve RTO/RPO and off load backup processing from production hosts. • Veritas Snapshot Client supports older arrays, but lacks support for newer arrays such as HP 3Par, IBM SVC, XIV and N-series, Hitachi VSP, EMC Celerra, VNX, Clariion CX4 and Dell Arrays. Replication Director 8.0 supports file system snapshots, VMware snapshots for file systems, Exchange and SQL and Oracle snapshots on physical machines on NetApp FAS, EMC Celerra and VNX and IBM N-Series arrays. Integrated archiving & eDiscovery for file systems, email & SharePoint in a single unified solution Reduce infrastructure and administrative requirements for archiving data in the environment. • Veritas NetBackup provides integrated archiving for file-systems, but requires Veritas Enterprise Vault for eMail and SharePoint archiving. Integrated Content Indexing & Search. eDiscovery across archive and backup provides total visibility to data. • Symantec/Veritas integrated Vivisimo as NetBackup Search in March 2012, but discontinued the integration with the release of NBU v7.7. NetBackup is limited to searching backup images utilizing the NBU Catalog Utility (Veritas NetBackup™ Administrator's Guide, Volume I, UNIX, Windows, and Linux, Release 8.0). Content Indexing and eDiscovery require the use of Enterprise Vault (across archived data) or the Veritas eDiscovery Platform solution. 8. Single virtual repository with mobile & web access Access information anywhere through ContentStore™. • Veritas has multiple repositories with Backup Exec, NBU, Enterprise Vault and NetBackup Desktop/Laptop Option™. All of these are separate products from NetBackup which have unique servers, database and administration console. (Veritas Enterprise Vault™, Introduction and Planning Guide 12.0 and Veritas Desktop and Laptop Option™ version 8.0, Administrator’s Guide, For Windows) 9. Automated Workflow Manage large-scale operations and shared services efficiently • Veritas provides Altiris IT Management suite for workflow, but this is a separate product with a separate infrastructure. 10. Integrated global operational reporting Provide robust, global reporting including capacity management and planning, SLAs, operational and instrumentation level views of environment • Veritas provides OpsCenter for basic operational reporting. You can expand the operational reporting and provide basic file level reporting by adding OpsCenter Analytics. A separate infrastructure is required for OpsCenter.
