The Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA) helps individuals and organizations connect across cultures. We provide information, support and tools to help immigrants reach their goals. By engaging people through networks, education and arts programming, we create a welcoming community. ICA offers services for newcomers, including settlement and integration counselling, translation and interpretation, English classes, mentoring, volunteer matching, and peer support. We also provide outreach and education in the community through arts programming, as well as workshops on anti-racism, multiculturalism, diversity awareness, immigration and human rights. Job description  The Settlement Youth Worker provides settlement and integration services to immigrant and refugee children and youth through, assessment, orientation, information, referrals and advocacy.  Plans, organizes and facilitates workshops and courses on topics relevant to settlement and integration of in-school children and youth.  Links children and youth with community resources.  Creates low-intensity or high-intensity settlement plans to reflect clients’ needs for short-term or long-term interventions.  Establishes and maintains working relationships with other service providers.  Provides culturally-sensitive problem-solving assistance to clients.  Contributes to overall settlement program planning and implementation.  Keeps client management and case notes up to date.  Uses technology and technological systems, e.g. client management databases and participates in training to learn new systems and stay up-to-date on systems requirements. Qualifications Minimum Grade 12 diploma with related professional courses on settlement-related themes (family law, immigration and refugee studies). Undergraduate degree in child and youth care preferred. Diploma in a related field (child and youth care preferred) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Proficiency in a major immigrant language is strongly desired. Direct experience working with children and youth (7 to 19) preferred. One to three years of previous work experience in a similar environment (social services, nonprofit organization) and experience working with children and youth from a wide variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Experience working with immigrants and/or refugees preferred. Knowledge of community resources would be an asset.

Required skills and abilities  Demonstrated specialized, advanced knowledge of settlement processes and referral practices.  Experienced working with children and youth.  Demonstrated knowledge of social and emotional needs of immigrant/refugee children and youth in a school setting.  Identify, access and refer appropriately to ICA programs and community services and resources.  Understand inter-cultural family dynamics.  Demonstrated empathy; knowledge of eligibility criteria; crisis intervention skills; and an ability to work with individuals and families experiencing discrimination, racism and culture shock.  Understand the basics of the Canadian legal system, laws and public policy.  Perform language and cultural interpretation.  Work effectively with an interpreter.  Demonstrate the ability to design and deliver workshops, including orientation workshops.  Manage a case load of immigrant and refugee clients.  Demonstrate computer proficiency; create, maintain and access electronic records in a client data management system.  Understand the objectives of the Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) approach and work effectively with other ICA Settlement Workers operating in the school system.  Demonstrate effective team work in a diverse team setting.  Create and maintain professional boundaries. Additional information  Occasional travel to locations in other parts of British Columbia and/or Canada for purposes like professional development, networking, or conferences may also be required.  Some work outside of regular office hours, including evenings and weekends, will be required. Flex time schedules will be made to accommodate pre-approved non-regular work hours.  Valid BC driver’s license and access to a car would be an asset.  First Aid Certification and WHMIS training will be required.
