August 31, 2017 September 15, 2017 Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) Monday to Friday – 35 hours per week (full-time) 930 Balmoral Road and various Schools in Districts 61, 62 and 63 $22.16 (benefits after successful completion of probation period)

The Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA) helps individuals and organizations connect across cultures. We provide information, support and tools to help immigrants reach their goals. By engaging people through networks, education and arts programming, we create a welcoming community. ICA offers services for newcomers, including settlement and integration counseling, translation and interpretation, English classes, mentoring, volunteer matching, and peer support. We also provide outreach and education in the community through arts programming, as well as workshops on anti-racism, multiculturalism, diversity awareness, immigration and human rights. Job description Provides settlement and integration services in schools for immigrants and refugees. Provides one-onone support to individuals or family units. Plans and implements group programs for immigrants and refugees. Liaises with school staff and assists clients in accessing other community-based resources. Qualifications Minimum Grade 12 diploma with related professional courses on settlement-related themes (family law, immigration and refugee studies). Undergraduate degree in related discipline (child and youth care, intercultural studies, or/and immigration and refugee studies) preferred. Diploma in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Proficiency in a major immigrant language (Arabic, Punjabi, Spanish) and/or immigration experience preferred. Direct experience with settlement service delivery strongly desired. One to three years of previous work experience in a similar environment (social services, nonprofit organization) and experience working with persons from a wide variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Experience working with immigrants and/or refugees preferred. Knowledge of community resources would be an asset. Required skills and abilities  Knowledge of the BC school system’s applicable regulations, policies and acts as they pertain to the work of Settlement Worker in Schools  Build and maintain effective relationships between ICA’s SWIS clients and their families, within schools and school districts  Knowledge of social and emotional needs of immigrant/refugee children and youth in a school setting  Specialized, advanced knowledge of settlement processes and referral practices.  Understand the objectives of the Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) approach and work effectively within the ICA Settlement team.  Experience working with children and youth  Identify and access community services and resources. 250-388-4728 • 930 Balmoral Road • Victoria, British Columbia • Canada • V8T 1A8 • www.icavictoria.org

Understand inter-cultural family dynamics. Knowledge of eligibility criteria. Crisis intervention skills. Demonstrate empathy. Ability to work with individuals and families experiencing discrimination, racism and culture shock. Understand the basics of the Canadian legal system, laws and public policy. Perform language and cultural interpretation. Work effectively with an interpreter. Ability to design and deliver workshops, including orientation workshops. Manage a case load of immigrant and refugee clients. Computer proficiency; create, maintain and access electronic records in a client data management system. Effective team work in a diverse team setting. Create and maintain professional boundaries.

Additional information  Travel to various school locations within Districts 61, 62, & 63 will be required. Occasional travel to locations in other parts of British Columbia and/or Canada for purposes like professional development, networking, or conferences may also be required.  Some work outside of regular office hours, including evenings and weekends, will be required.  Flex time schedules will be made to accommodate pre-approved non-regular work hours.  Valid BC driver’s license and access to a car are required.  Current, clear criminal record check is required upon hire.  WHMIS training will be required.
