Superintendent’s Message Dear Community Members, June is a wonderful and yet bittersweet time for our school district. It is marked by celebrations of the many accomplishments of our students, and difficult partings as we bid our senior class goodbye and wish them well on their most exciting journey into adulthood. Presented here is a commemorative graduation issue of the district newsletter. I am certain that you will share our pride as we celebrate their myriad of achievements. With pride and excitement we celebrated our four elementary school graduations, the LMK Moving Up ceremony, and of course, Harrison High School’s Commencement. We also bid farewell to employees who dedicated their lives to educating our children. We wish them well as they too, move on to new challenges.

Superintendent of Schools Louis Wool with graduate Toni Marraccini and Harrison High School Principal Keith Schenker

I would like to share with our graduating seniors the sentiments one of our founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson wrote, “Every generation needs a new revolution.” Whatever that revolution is to be, whatever its purpose, it will be written by each one of you. Our world again looks to the next generation to help us redefine the possible. Your character and values will determine our destiny. After reading our newsletter, I am certain you will concur that these young people have the intelligence, the commitment, and the vision to lead us to a promising and prosperous future. Best wishes for a safe and restful summer. Sincerely, Louis N. Wool, Superintendent of Schools

Farewell and Best Wishes to Our 2004-05 Retirees The Harrison Central School District wishes to express its gratitude to three staff members who have given their time and devotion to our students, families and community. • Stephen Ochser, Parsons Memorial School Principal • Florence Ostapko, LMK Middle School Foreign Language Teacher • Grace Zanazzi, HHS Social Studies Teacher We wish them well in all their future endeavors.

To the Class of 2005 “It is a fact of history that this class is destined to live a life very different than other generations. This class is far different because they have had to bear witness to significant changes in our society at the time of crucial moments of personal change. My belief is that this has produced a more resilient, more flexible and more reflective graduate. You are all at a point in your lives where you need to take stock in what you have accomplished. You need to examine the life you have lived and the experiences both personal and societal that have helped shape the graduate that now stands on the edge of a new frontier. I know that what I have witnessed in the short time we have spent together is truly astonishing. You have all been forced to endure significant change above and beyond those expected to occur in the development of any individual as they approach adulthood. What I see in you are men and women that have risen above the challenges presented and excelled in a vast number of fields. This class as a whole has blazed a trail at Harrison High School that will be difficult for others to repeat. Use the persistence of inevitable change and uncertainty not as a cause for concern or anxiety, but as a reason to celebrate in the excitement of every new day. You leave this campus fully prepared for the life ahead of you, with the support of your family and friends, the belief that you can master any endeavor you chose to undertake and with the fortitude and knowledge to create a new history unique compared to anything that has preceded it.”

GRADUATES MOVING ON –

It now seems that we are quite ready and willing to move on to the next stage of our lives. As we embark upon this journey, I ask that you all reflect on everything that you have learned throughout your lives to this point, both inside and outside the classroom. Although it might not have seemed like it at the time, all the information we learned will ultimately be useful, and help shape the way we are and how we act. This is a beginning as much as it is an end. It is the beginning of our passage into the wide world- a world beyond Harrison, beyond New York, beyond America. I urge you all to find your niche in this world, and do all you can to better it. Everything in life happens for a reason, and we do only what we’re meant to do. But, one of the few things we can choose is what to do with the time that is given to us. I am sure that we will all make the right choices to succeed in the future. Congratulations to the class of 2005, and may the Force be with you. —Rohan Kumthekar, Valedictorian

During our four years at Harrison we have all gained different, but valuable insights into life. Many of us dedicated ourselves to sports and “learned” from team experience and competition. Some of us chose to concentrate on academic endeavors. This is what many consider “learning” and the true point of high school; sitting in a classroom, learning facts,

4

CREATING A NEW HISTORY ideas and principles. And some of us chose to focus on making friends and being social throughout high school. But in this way, too, each one of us “learned” and as a result, grew and developed. Now, one would think it is impossible to compare these three very different types of education — athletic, academic and social. They are all needed for success and most people have chosen to partake in several of these different endeavors. But what we have all have learned is that education does not merely occur in the classroom, but also during the time we spend with our friends and peers. So that even though we may participate in the same activities, every person learns an individual yet equally valuable lesson. —Tyler Thompson, Salutatorian

There is no doubt that we have changed Harrison High School. As we prepare for the next stage of our lives, may we always remember the change that occurred within us and the changes brought on by the incredibly close friendships we’ve formed. If we can remember only this, we may be comforted knowing that the first stepping stone to our future has already been placed. —Stephanie DiFazio, Senior Class President
