STYLE HUNTERS Interior trends come and go, but there are a handful of key looks in Australia that remain constant. Many of us give these cornerstone styles our own personal twist, but we are also seeing the emergence of many global influences. So, what are the most popular styles in Australia? MODERN/CONTEMPORARY 55% - Although these two styles are very different, often homeowners view these two as a mixed broad category, favouring confident colours 11

or clean white schemes and of the moment materials. TRADITIONAL 23% - A mix of warm colours, quality furniture and comfort. Most popular in Adelaide at ~30% vs. least popular in Sydney at 21%.

12

ECLECTIC 19% - A catch all style for homes with a great mix of old and new, an element of surprise and a rulebook shuffling of colour. 13

COUNTRY 15% - A relaxed style with soft colours and rustic pieces and an increasing focus on vintage nostalgia. 14

12

TREND SETTERS Overall, Sydneysiders lead when it comes to global styles such as European, Scandinavian, and Asian Perthians love Country and Industrial styles the most Adelaidians lead the country in styles like Traditional, Retro/Vintage, and Eclectic As expected, Brisbanites lead the country in Tropical style!

COLOUR ME HAPPY Colours are very personal and one person’s rainbow wall is another’s neon nightmare. So perhaps it’s no surprise that the majority of us like to keep to tradition and favour white/off-white inside the home. However, more colours are slowly creeping in with different preferences for different areas of the house. EXTERIOR Grey is the dominant colour used in Aussie exteriors while brown and orange are increasing in popularity. When it comes to the front door, two-thirds of us stick to neutral colours like Brown, Black and White. However, over 1 in 20 now have a red front door, with similar numbers for Green (5.2%) and Blue (5.5%) as well.

19

14

20

21

INTERIOR White and off-white remain the safe, dominant choice in most rooms around the house. However, yellow, grey and green are being used more extensively in the Living and Dining Rooms. Whereas, purple and blue are gaining popularity in the bedroom.

HOME DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS The majority of Aussie homeowners (nearly 80%) say they live in a modest detached house, with the rest of us in apartments or townhouses alike. Therefore, it’s natural for us to often dream of a bigger and grander home. Despite this, nearly 1 in 5 Australian women say that they already live in their dream home (this drops to only 1 in 7 for Australian men). The good news is that contentment with our homes grows with age, with 85% of those over 65 being proud of their homes vs. only 70% of those between 25 and 34. OUR TOP FANTASY HOMES AS A NATION

QUOTES FROM AUSSIE HOUZZERS PROFESSIONALS “Houzz has been a significant help in my business. Design work on the Sunshine Coast, QLD has been slow over the past couple of years. Through Houzz I have obtained clients ranging from Northern NSW, Victoria, the Gold Coast and Sydney. When potential clients contact me they are interested in what I do and are ready to engage my services.” Soul Space Building Design, Sunshine Coast QLD 68

71

“Over 50% of all our referral traffic comes from Houzz. We currently have a project from Houzz in America with leads coming from as far and wide as Greece, Lithuania and China. Our company’s global reach has only become possible through Houzz.” C.O.S. Design (Landscape Design & Construction), Camberwell VIC 69

“Our innovative Architectural Practice has had more enquiries and won new projects from Houzz than through glossy design magazines. It provides the end user and Architect immediate contact and the opportunity to see if a working relationship can be established” Scott Weston Architecture & Design, Sydney NSW

72

“Houzz ensures that we are constantly updating our knowledge of designs and materials for our clients so we bring extra value to every project we do. New clients in the area find us on Houzz and get a sense of who we are, they get inspiration and because they are local to us, we work together and we can share our best contacts and suppliers with them. Houzz is a big part of our business and it inspires us every day.” Capital Building (Residential Builders), Bondi Junction, NSW

“In our few months on Houzz, I’ve noticed a significant increase of contacts through Houzz where the large majority of these leads turned into jobs. On many occasions, clients told me that after seeing photos of my work and reading reviews from previous clients, they already knew they wanted to hire me, as they felt confident about the suitability of my services for their particular projects. I find the quality of the clients who contact[ed] me through Houzz to be very high.” Twinkle & Whistle Interior Design, Perth WA
