How to Get There

Currency

BY AIR Qantas operate flights from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and seasonally from Perth to Auckland and Jetstar operate connections to Rarotonga. Jetstar also fly from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Gold Coast to Auckland with connections to Rarotonga. Connecting flights from all major Australian cities are available. Direct flights operate once a week from Sydney to Rarotonga with Air New Zealand. Connecting flights from all major Australian cities are available. Virgin Australia fly from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Gold Coast via Auckland to Rarotonga and seasonally from Christchurch to Rarotonga. Air Rarotonga operates flights between Rarotonga and Aitutaki three to four times daily. Air Rarotonga also operates direct flights from Rarotonga to Atiu and Mangaia three days a week and Mitiaro two days a week. A direct flight operates between Aitutaki and Atiu three days a week. The New Zealand Dollar is the official unit of currency in the Cook Islands. ATMs are located around Rarotonga and Aitutaki and EFTPOS is available at some hotels and stores. All major credit cards are widely accepted.

DRIVING If hiring a car or scooter, the standard left hand rule applies to driving in the Cook Islands. The maximum speed limit in villages and towns is 40km/h, with 50km/h in less populated areas. If hiring a car a current Australian driver’s licence is required. If hiring a scooter, a current Cook Islands driver’s licence is required which can be obtained from the police station on Rarotonga or Aitutaki. Compulsory theory, practical, handling and skills tests are required at a cost of NZD90. Once you have passed a fee of NZD20 applies for a Cook Islands visitor driver’s licence which is valid for 30 days.

Visas & Passports All travellers must carry a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of departure. Travellers must also hold a return or onward ticket. A visa is not required for stays of up to 31 days. Travel advice is available from the Australian Government at smarttraveller.gov.au.

1 Aitutaki Lagoon 1. Aitutaki Lagoon Tick Aitutaki Lagoon off your bucket list. With its sparkling turquoise water dotted with 15 motu (islets) and emerald green main island, it is one of the most magnificent lagoons in the world. Be sure to mail a postcard at the world’s smallest post office on motu Tapuaetai (One Foot Island). See pages 19, 43.

2. Water Adventures The Cook Islands are an aquatic playground with a wide range of watersports on offer. Snorkel in the crystal lagoons inside the reef and find an abundance of coral and fish. Rarotonga, the Cooks’ main island, is simply breathtaking. The main town, Avarua, is a bustling, friendly, centre of activity. Here you’ll find restaurants, cafés, shops and business facilities, while the airport is just five minutes away. The Punanga Nui Markets, held every Saturday morning, are a must do, offering everything from flower garlands, fresh fish, fruits and vegetables, to black pearls, rito hats and colourful pareus (sarongs).

At just 32 kilometres around, it’s easy to explore Rarotonga, hire a car, take a bus or hail a tuk tuk.

One of the most stunning lagoons on Rarotonga is at Muri Beach. It’s the spot for watersports including sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and swimming. Thanks to the tradewinds from May to November, you can also try your hand at windsurfing or kite surfing. June to October is the ideal time for whale watching. Four coral islets are a pretty addition to the lagoon – Koromiri Islet is the pick for weddings. A few bars, restaurants and shops on the beach provide all you need for a relaxing break.

Taste the flavours of fresh local cuisine at Muri Night Market, open 5pm to 9pm four nights a week. Shop for South Seas inspired homewares and locally made jewellery including Cook Islands pearls at The Emporium, opposite the beach in Titikaveka.

Great snorkelling and swimming spots are never far away on Rarotonga. The south coast, from Titikaveka to Vaimaanga and Aroa Beach, has lovely wide, long beaches and the deepest lagoon on the island, making it one of the best for snorkelling and all-tide swimming. In Titikaveka town you’ll also find the Cook Islands Christian Church. The locals singing at Sunday service is an experience not to be missed. Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve, a breeding ground for tropical reef fish, provides another location for fantastic swimming and snorkelling. In fact you’ll be spoilt for choice for fabulous spots along the whole west coast, a long stretch of sandy beach ending at Black Rock. Expect spectacular sunsets from this side of the island. Rarotonga’s mountainous interior, rising to 653 metres, provides a stunning contrast to the coast’s aquatic wonderland. There are plenty of opportunities for action and adventure here, from guided walks to 4WD and quad bike tours.

PRICES & CONDITIONS This brochure was printed on 28 November 2017. The prices in this brochure are valid for travel from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019, unless otherwise stated, are in Australian dollars and include GST where applicable. Exchange rates used when pricing this brochure are as at 6 October 2017. All prices are subject to availability, subject to change and can be withdrawn or varied without notice. Price changes may occur by reason of matters outside our control which increase the cost of the product or service. Such factors include (without limitation) adverse currency fluctuations, fuel surcharges, taxes and airfare increases. Surcharges and minimum stays may apply due to demand, Christmas and New Year’s Eve, school and public holidays, special events and other circumstances. All prices are the lowest available prices at the time of print and are a guide only. Please check all prices, availability, fees, conditions and information with your travel agent before booking. If we have to change any part of your booking for reasons beyond our control, for example, an Accommodation Supplier overbooks accommodation, or if there is an increase in taxes or Supplier charges, we will notify you. If any such changes result in your holiday costing more or otherwise being materially different from that originally booked, you may cancel the booking and we will refund any monies already paid less any charges levied by Suppliers.

DEPOSITS & FINAL PAYMENTS Deposit A minimum non-refundable deposit of $55 per person for domestic bookings and $100 per person for international bookings is payable within 7 days of confirmation of your booking. You will be notified at the time of booking if any additional deposit requirements apply.

Final Payment Final payment of your holiday cost is required at least 30 days prior to departure or by sale end date or by the payment deadline specified in individual package conditions, whichever is earlier. Some services, including airfares, may require full payment at the time of booking. For bookings made less than 31 days prior to travel, full payment of holiday cost is required at the time your booking is confirmed. Please ensure payments are made by the due dates. If this does not happen, our system will automatically cancel the booking without notice or liability to you. Only upon payment of the full cost of your holiday do you have a final booking with the Supplier of the relevant good and/or service. In arranging your booking, Qantas Holidays is acting as the agent of the Supplier of the relevant Product and at no time do you have a contract with Qantas Holidays.

CREDIT & DEBIT CARD SURCHARGES A fee will apply for payments made by debit and credit cards. Please check this fee with us or your travel agent when booking.

FEES Amendment Fees If you wish to change your booking prior to departure, an amendment fee of $30 will be charged if the overall value of the booking remains the same or decreases, in addition to any fees imposed by the Supplier of each service booked.

Air Ticket Reissue Fees If you wish to change your flight booking after the ticket has been issued, a reissue fee of $22 per ticket will be charged, in addition to any fees imposed by the Airline.

Late Booking Fees A fee of $30 will be charged for all bookings made less than 7 days prior to travel. All fees can be varied without notice.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS Prior to final payment: Your deposit is forfeited. After final payment: There will be no refund of your deposit, in addition to any fees imposed by the Supplier, which may be up to 100% of monies paid. After travel: There will be no refund for cancellation once travel has commenced. There will be no refund for unused services unless cancelled prior to travel date, with the exception of OPEN DATED services where the service is unused due to rain for the entire stay. Requests for refunds received more than 6 months after departure date will not be accepted.

RESPONSIBILITY Qantas Holidays acts as an agent for the Suppliers (transport, tour, event or accommodation providers) who provide the various goods and/or services (Products). All bookings are subject to the terms and conditions and limitations of liability imposed by each Supplier. It is therefore important for you to obtain and read the applicable Supplier’s terms and conditions as they may limit or exclude their liability to you. AIRFARES Airfares not included unless otherwise specified. A number of airfares can be used in conjunction with your holiday package. All airfares are subject to availability and have special conditions. In most instances airfares must be paid in full at the time of booking and some may be non-refundable.

TRAVEL INSURANCE We strongly recommend you take out appropriate travel insurance to cover your travel arrangements.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL Each passenger is responsible for their own visa, passport (with at least 6 months validity), immigration, quarantine, customs, health and other requirements of the countries to be visited or transited through. Qantas Holidays makes no representations as to the safety, conditions or other issues that may arise at any destination. Travel advice is available from the Australian Government at smartraveller.gov.au.

TRANSFERS & TOURS Some Accommodation Suppliers provide courtesy transfers to/from the airport. It is essential that these transfers are pre-booked. Some Tour Suppliers provide complimentary pick up and return to your holiday accommodation and require a minimum number of passengers to operate. If minimum numbers are not achieved tours may be cancelled at short notice. Additionally, some Suppliers reserve the right to cancel departures for other reasons, including bad weather. Some tours and itineraries may also vary and attractions may be substituted due to seasonal conditions. Qantas Holidays will not be held liable for a service variation, cancellation, delay or withdrawal, or a Supplier’s failure to notify you. A full refund applies for the cancelled tour.
