Week 4 Cooperation effects: The rewards of cooperation.

Dear Family, This month our Powerful Word of the month is “cooperation.” Cooperation, quite simply, is working together towards a common goal. It is a compilation of social skills such as taking turns, sharing, listening, compromising, rallying together and appreciating others. Working together to complete tasks and solve problems are skills that are learned early on in life. Studies have shown that children as young as 12-18 months old show the roots of cooperation (See Warneken & Tomasello, Infancy, 2007). And just two years ago, researchers determined that between ages three and five-years-old,

children develop the ability to plan the division of labor in collaborative tasks and solve problems together (Warneken et al, Cognitive Development, 2014).

to help their families, student government, study groups, and friendships work effectively. Cooperation is a skill that is practiced early on in life and is still needed daily in adult life.

As children become more involved with sports and other extra-curricular activities, children learn that cooperation is needed to make teams work effectively. They learn about filling in when needed, showing value for other people’s contribution, rallying others to keep morale high and even knowing when to step back to allow others room to grow and shine.

Please help us by “driving cooperation home” after you leave our facility. Speak with your children about how they can show cooperation at home and in each part of their lives. As future and current leaders, they can lead the way!

Of course, these lessons don’t stop at sports. Children can apply the same knowledge and practice of cooperation
