Sometimes the picture is of a new to Good Shepherd donor, a young one making a first donation, or a donor sporting one of the donor Halloween T-shirts that are a treasured part of her October blood drives. Lois has helped many people take that first step on the path to being life-long life-savers. At the most recent blood drive ALYX, the automated blood collection (ABC) instrument for double red cells, was introduced to Lois and her donors. Five people donated with the support of ALYX which resulted in 10 units of concentrated red cells; one of the most needed blood components. Ever the “graceful lady”, Lois promptly sent a personal thank-you note and asking if “Alyx” can come to her next drive.

Lois Lightfoot, Coordinator, Church of the Good Shepherd We are so grateful for your dedicated and light hearted service, Lois. Happy 10th Anniversary!

The Difference YOU Make “I have given blood most of my adult life. I’m not a megadonor; I probably give blood three times a year. I can’t remember the first time I donated, perhaps it was in college. I’ve never been comfortable giving blood and I’ve been known to faint at the sight of it so I bring a book along to distract me from what’s going on. I give because I can and it’s relatively easy. I’ve probably been a regular donor for about 30 years. At the beginning of this year [2011], my daughter, Maggie (16), was diagnosed with leukemia. So far, she’s needed four transfu-

sions. I always thought my blood was going to a victim of a car accident or some other trauma. I never realized how much blood goes to cancer patients or others with serious illnesses. I will continue to give blood as long as I’m able not just for my daughter (we don’t have the same blood type) but for all those who can benefit from my donation.” - Mary

Sabo Personal note from Robyn Kaplan, Sr. Account Manager, Inova Blood Donor Services: Maggie’s family has

leukemia was a total shock when her mom took her to the doctor after she had a sore throat and low-grade fever for a couple of days. When the strep test came back negative, the doctor decided to test her for mono and she was admitted to Inova Fairfax Children’s Hospital that same day to begin treatment Had Maggie not gotten ill, I am certain she would have donated at her high school blood drive which was scheduled 2 weeks after her diagnosis.

Many of the blood and blood products collected are used by patients undergoing cancer treatment. We all know someone battling cancer. Please be sure you get this important message out to your donors!

We are so thankful for Maggie’s continued treatment which includes blood transfusions when necessary. Thank you all again for your meaningful work with us. - Robyn

DONOR ELIGIBILITY UPDATES Important Eligibility Updates As you might know, all blood collection agencies in the United States are governed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, within these guidelines, collection agencies can choose to require stricter measures. Inova Blood Donor Services has made some significant changes so as to reflect the majority guidelines utilized by most blood collection agencies. Please note these important changes.
