Katie Thistleton Thanks from....Wood Street Mission

This half term seems to have flown by in many ways and there is now only a week until we have a short break. I imagine that most staff and students will welcome this as people have been working very hard. Year 11 students will have their second set of mock exams either side of the half term break and should be well prepared. We have had an exciting visit from Katie Thistleton this week to launch her new book and it was great to see that lots of pupils bought copies. Today brings our Parents' Coffee Morning so I am looking forward to meeting lots of visitors and next week we have our transition residential with students from Cedar Mount, Stanley Grove, Rushbrook and Old Hall Drive. Have a great weekend and we will see you for another busy week next week! Mr Mellen

Katie Thistleton Visit  It was great to welcome CBBC TV and radio presenter Katie Thistleton back to Cedar this week. Last year pupils had the honour of speaking to Katie when she was researching material for her book, she wanted to understand more about the day to day problems young teenagers face i.e family issues, body image, exam stress, social media, bullying…in fact anything.  At her last visit we presented her with a glittery box full of ‘Dear Katie’ letters (which she still has) to take away and read. A year on and the book is finished and focuses on real questions from real kids providing honest advice. Katie explained how she struggled with mental health during her childhood and was diagnosed with anxiety and depression as an adult, she now realises the signs were obvious in her teenage years which is why she is passionate about helping young people to look after their emotional health as well as their physical. She hopes kids will read the book and relate to the problems she discusses. Katie also admitted it contains stories about her life as a presenter and some rather embarrassing ones from her teenage years, during the Q & A session she told pupils her favourite singer was Beyonce, she’d give up presenting to become a full time author and admitted when she’d had for ‘crème eggs for breakfast!’ At the end of Katie's visit she took time to sign copies of her book and pose for selfies - the queue spread to the other side of the theatre! If you weren't fortunate enough to buy a book then Miss Molloy has ten copies in the library, unfortunately there's a wait as all have been lent out!

Fundraising  Our kind friends at Wood Street Mission wrote a lovely thank you letter to Miss Singh, here's what they had to say.
