Trip to Leeds University       On Thursday we went on a trip with Miss Morris, Miss Pereira and GM Higher staff to Leeds University. It was for the students who attend Miss Morris’ weekly film club. A few weeks ago we spoke to a real life Freedom Writer who talked to us about the importance of higher education and last week film club got the opportunity to observe university first hand. In my opinion the trip was an extraordinary experience that will not be forgotten, in terms of the campus it was very spacious and had a variety of buildings with interesting subjects. We worked with the media department and were given the opportunity to make news programmes on the TV and radio. I personally enjoyed the TV presenting session the most. It really gave me an insight into life at university, everyone was so friendly and really supportive when we were practicing to be presenters & work behind the camera. I loved the tour of the campus it was interesting finding out about the student union and the different societies. The trip validated my decision to work towards university although until this week I was unsure where I wanted to study, having visited Leeds it has made my mind up as to where I have want to study once I have completed my A Levels. A big thanks to Miss Morris, we had a great day out on what can only be described as a five star trip.

Bigger Book - Star Pupil of the week     Things are hotting up in the English department as Year 7 compete to win the Bigger Book Bash  competition being held at Stanley Grove on Saturday 23rd June, the event never fails to fuel our young writers passion for poetry and keeps them motivated with their writing. Winners will perform their self-penned poems on stage whilst special guest, CBBC's Katie Thistleton, plans to read the best of the best poems. Seevan is a talented poet and writer and loves spending time in the library, here's an example of the standard Miss Molloy and Miss Boyd are up against during the shortlisting process this week.   Well done Seevan your entry earned you star pupil of the week!

Sporting achievements  Sports Round-Up

Year 7’s boys and girls recently took part in the Manchester Quadkids competition. All students had to take part in the relay, 100 meter sprint, 800 meters, long jump and hurler.  The boys placed 6th overall and Koby was crowned individual champion of Manchester!

The year 7 basketball team played their first fixture of the year away at Swinton High School.  Although the boys haven’t played before they showed excellent team work and perseverance to come from behind to beat Swinton.  They were coached by Year 9 basketball player DJ Pedro.

The Year 9 cricket team played a rain interrupted two day game of cricket in the Manchester cup quarter finals against Burnage.  After a few tense moments and some fantastic bowling the boys ran out winners and are due to play Parrs Wood in the semi-final, a repeat of last year’s final who they played. Year 10 cricket team also won their quarter final game against Parrs Wood and are due to meet Burnage in the semi finals next week.

DJ Pedro and Sam Gyan also represented south Manchester in the Manchester School games.  Samuel taking part in the 800 meters came 5th overall and DJ Pedro who took part in the 80 meter hurdles set a new Machester school boys record.  He also ran a national standard time meaning he has qualified for the national championships.   Well done DJ and thanks for helping out at Old Hall Drive yesterday. You are a true role model and excellent Sports Leader.

Maths Escape Room  On the 12th June pupils from Year 10 participated in the Maths Escape Room challenge.  The day was based around mathematical concepts  and challenges that meant you had to think ‘outside of the box’ and work as a team.  Each team had to complete a task and collect a cog to build a machine, they were all different and looked at various aspects of maths in an engaging way. Tesselation skills were used to finish a puzzle in the dark, contemplate air pressure and angles to shoot aliens, programme a robot to transport a magnet through a maze and finally work out how to reach targets on a mathematical dance mat. Pupils  used maths and problem solving skills to successfully complete the tasks and collected enough cogs to build the machine. Everyone worked extremely hard throughout the challenge and had an enjoyable time.

Class of 2018 I don’t think we can ever quite believe it when Year 11 fly the nest, it doesn’t seem two minutes ago since they first walked through the doors fresh faced and full of excitement. We hope we've instilled in them the importance of our core values and thank them for being a phenomenal cohort. We wish them every success in the exams and the future! Good luck class of 2018 we miss you already!
