Sri Lanka’s Big Five Safari Tour 14 nights/ 15 days tour experience with Jetwing Eco Holidays. Day 1: Route: Airport > Kalpitiya Drive Time: Approx: 3 hrs Hotel: Bar Reef Resort Room Type: Cabana Arrival in Sri Lanka and transfer to Kalpitiya for two nights Recover from any jetlag

Day 2: Route: Kalpitiya Hotel: Bar Reef Resort Room Type: Cabana Main Attractions: Dolphin & Whale Watching Morning, take the boat and head out to sea, beyond the reef in search of Sperm Whales the largest toothed whale in the world. The deep seas off the Kalpitiya Peninsula where the continental shelf lies provides an ideal habitat for these giant oceanic predators, which need to dive several hundred meters to hunt prey such as the Giant Squid. After sighting Sperm Whales, your naturalist will focus on Spinner Dolphins, where pods often numbering in the hundreds are regularly seen within a few kilometers of the shore. Morning & Afternoon jeep safari to Wilpattu National Park. The biggest draws in Wilpattu are Leopards and Sloth bears. Alongside these, it is possible to see Asian Elephants, Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Wild Pig, Asiatic Buffalo and Mugger Crocodiles. Endemic birds include the Ceylon Junglefowl, Brown-capped Babbler, Ceylon Woodshrike and Blackcapped Bulbul in riverine habitats. Muntjac or Barking Deer are more easily seen in Wilpattu than any other national park.

Day 5: Route: Wilpattu > Kandy Drive Time: Approx: 4 hrs Hotel: Cinnamon Citadel Room Type: Superior Main Attractions: Temple of the Tooth After breakfast leave for Kandy for one night. Kandy is Sri Lanka’s second largest city but quite different from Colombo due to the hills and cooler climate. It is a pleasant place for walking either in the town, in the surrounding hills. Visit the Temple of The Sacred Tooth Relic, housed in the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is an object of veneration to Buddhists and the most important sacred relic in the country is. The temple is one of the most sacred places in the world for Buddhists. From ancient times kings have kept the Sacred Tooth Relic in their kingdoms as a symbol of power. History records that the Tooth Relic was first brought to the Island by Prince Dhantha and Princess Hemamali during the reign of King Kirti Sri Meghavanna (301 - 328 AD). It is a traditional belief that, whoever takes possession of the Tooth Relic, ruler or invader, has the power to rule the people.

Day 6: Route: Kandy > Udawalawe Drive Time: Approx: 5 hrs Hotel: Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort Room Type: Deluxe Main Attractions: Udawalawe National Park After breakfast leave for Udawalawe for one night. Afternoon visit Udawalawe National Park by safari jeeps. Udawalawe presents you with first dry zone experience on the tour with Elephants and fantastic birding. In a visit to Udawalawe National Park close to 50-60 Elephants can be seen and the Nursery Herd which comprise of many baby Elephants is one of the key attractions. The park is good for birds of prey and we will look for Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Black-shouldered Kite, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Crested Serpent Eagle, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Shikra, Common Kestrel, Brown Fish Owl and Western Marsh Harrier. Also look for Malabar-pied Hornbill, Thick-billed Flowerpecker, Plum-headed Parakeet, Common Hoopoe, Sirkeer Malkoha, Blue-faced Malkoha, Little Green Bee-eater, Barred Buttonquail (sub species leggei, which

is one of the 18 sub species worldwide!), Indian Silverbill and Black-headed Munia. Also look for the migrants which include Black-capped Purple Kingfisher, Blyth's Pipit and Orange-headed Thrush.

Day 7: Route: Udawalawe > Yala Drive Time: Approx: 2 hrs Hotel: Jetwing Yala Room Type: Superior Main Attractions: Yala National Park After breakfast leave for Yala for four nights. Afternoon jeep safari to Yala National Park. According to the Leopard Research, under the Jetwing Research Initiative Yala Block 1 has the highest density of Leopards in the world. Yala therefore offers one of the best chances in Asia to see Leopards. You may also see Elephant, Sloth Bear, Sambhur, Spotted Deer, Wild Boar, Stripe-necked, Brown & Ruddy Mongooses, Black-naped Hare & several civet species. In the water holes you may see Mugger Crocodile, Painted Stork, Lesser Whistling Teal, Black-headed Ibis, Eurasian Spoonbill, Great, Median & Little Egrets & the rare Black-necked Stork. Also drive up to the Buttuwa Tank to see the rare winter visitor, Bay-backed Shrike. The migrant bird species that you are likely to see include Indian Pitta, Brahminy Myna & large flocks of Rosy Starling flying for roost. The monsoon forest vegetation of the park is dominated by Palu Trees. (Manilkara hexandra) and the thick undergrowth is dominated by thorny bushes.

Day 8 - 10: Route: Yala Hotel: Jetwing Yala Room Type: Superior Main Attractions: Yala National Park Morning & Afternoon jeep safari to Yala National Park

Day 11: Route: Yala > Galle Drive Time: Approx: 4 hrs Hotel: Jetwing Lighthouse Room Type: Superior Main Attractions: Galle fort After breakfast leave for Galle for three nights. Evening visit Galle fort. Dutch Fort-Galle is a UNESCO world heritage site. Visit the Bastians including the Sun, Moon, Star, Zwart (with the old water-gate and hidden entrance identified as the Santa Cruz Bastion of the Portuguese), Akesloot (where the first Breadfruit tree was planted by the Dutch), Old Gunpowder Magazine, Aeloes, Triton, Neptune and other Bastians. Street), Leyn-Baan Street (Lijnberg meaning rope walk), and Modarabaay Street (Modderbaai meaning Mud bay) see the Old Dutch Houses, private Museum where Dutch period antiques could be seen and part of the Old sewage system that emptied to the sea with the high/low tide.

Day 12 & 13: Route: Galle > Mirissa > Galle Hotel: Jetwing Lighthouse Room Type: Superior Main Attractions: Dolphin & Whale Watching Morning, drive to the Mirissa Fishery's Harbour and start your journey out to sea in a spacious and comfortable boat. Blue Whales in concentrations not seen elsewhere in the world would be the highlight of the day. A concentration of Blue Whales of this nature is something which whale watchers can only dream about. During the migration, Blue Whales are seen relatively close to shore as the continental shelf is narrow to the South of Dondra.

Day 14: Route: Galle > Colombo Drive Time: Approx: 3 hrs Hotel: Villa Talangama Room Type: Kings Main Attractions: Talangama Wetland After breakfast leave for Colombo for one night. In the evening, visit Talangama Wetland and surrounding paddy fields for an assortment of brilliant red Dragonflies such as Elusive Adjutant, Eastern Scarlet Darter and Spine-legged Redbolt and with luck two rare gomphids. Around the lake and canals we find many pond damselflies including endemic species of Gems, Sprites, and Threadtails.

Day 15: Route: Colombo > Airport Drive Time: Approx: 1 ½ hrs Transfer to airport for departure
