Welcome to the latest edition of We want to make it as easy as possible for our wonderful supporters to visit us so we have moved offices to Level 3 above the hospital’s main entrance and we are hoping to have a new “charity hub” coming to the main entrance later in 2017. We hope everyone will stop to say “hello” as they come in to the hospital. Thank you to everyone who joined us for first ever Colour Run in September. Around 500 runners came along for the event raising thousands for various departments around the hospital. There are lots of amazing photos

on our Facebook page. We’re now getting ready for this year’s Jingle Jog on Sunday 3rd December – why not register now: derbyhospitalscharity.org.uk/ events Once again we’ve been busy meeting many wonderful fundraisers and supporters (pages 4 to 8), our mascot Lambie has also been out and about and if you fancy taking on the challenge of a lifetime you can find out all about Global Adventure Challenges on page 3. Jingle Jog Everyone’s favourite festive fundraiser Jingle Jog is back on Sunday 3rd December 2017 at Markeaton Park. This 5k (3.1 miles) fun run is for everyone, adults, children and dogs alike. You don’t have to run, you can walk, jog or run – it’s up to you! There will also be an alternative ½ mile run for under 10’s. GLOBAL CHALLENGE EVENTS Want to push yourself and take on one of the most amazing physical challenges of your life and give something back to a cause close to your heart? Why not tackle an amazing cycle challenge in a fantastic destination such as Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and even Vietnam? Fundraisers Our fantastic fundraisers have been very busy once again…

Amy, Sam and George all received care in Puffin ward at the Children’s Hospital. To say thank you they organised a cake sale and a colouring competition in their school and they raised an amazing £188.

Shannon Wyles raised £365 for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit by running a 5k race in November last year to say thank you for the care given to her nephew.

Sienna Thompson, Miss Galaxy, kindly organised a cake sale which raised £66.50 for the Children’s Hospital which she presented to Andy March, General Manager of the Children’s Hospital

Mr David Wall from TOYOTA raised £200 from a raffle to go towards a new Accuvein machine for the Combined Day Unit where his mother is receiving treatment.

Mr David Jowett, Chairman of Codnor Parish Council raised £200 for the Butterfly Suite with a collection at Codnor Parish Council Civic Service.

Sophia Stallard organised a family gathering celebrating her uncle Steven Lynch’s life on what would have been his 43rd birthday, raising £1,000 for Ward 303 in his memory.

Children from Markeaton School held a cake sale which raised £78.66 for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Rebbecca Higginbottom raised £240 for the oncology ward selling her fantastic cakes. Former DCFC former players raised a fantastic £3,000 which was presented to Chief Nurse Cathy Winfield and Sister Mel Parkin at a DCFC match.

Thanks once again to Angela Measures at Café Jaks in Heanor. Her Christmas and Easter raffles raised £350 for the Breast Unit - it is great to have Angela’s ongoing support. SharpSmart Waste Management kindly donated £687 to the Children’s Hospital.

Staff members Marie Jackson, Magda Lakomska and Rebecca Barber ran the Liverpool marathon and raised £643.75 for their Ward – Ward 408.

Danny Murphy raised over £600 by completing a 100 mile bike ride. He donated arts and crafts items for the Children’s Hospital and also donated £276.15 in cash.

James Hounsell from Westminster Building Company kindly donated a TV for the Children’s Hospital much to the delight of our young patients.

A huge well done to the Coast to Coast cyclist team who raised a fantastic £2,615.13 for various departments around the hospital.

Bernadette Moore raised £125 after being sponsored to get her hair shaved for Puffin Ward at the Children’s Hospital. Amanda Bennett and her colleagues at HMP Sudbury prison raised £300 from an ongoing cake challenge.

Maddy Murphy, Claire Duckett and Susan Dodd who all work in the X Ray Department ran the Ramathon and used the money they raised to buy things to make the X Ray waiting area more dementia friendly.

Marie Gretton, Lorna Priestman, Rebecca Yates, Clare Vintner and Anna Grover successfully completed the Tough Mudder Half challenge and raised £1,185 for Dermatology and Dementia funds.

Fundraisers Shining Stars Nursery held a family fun day at their nursery and raised a brilliant £520 for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Eamonn Hughes ran this year’s Derby 10k and raised £390 for the Acute Stroke Unit Ward 410.

Darren Knight successfully completed the London Marathon and raised an amazing £1,641.40 for Paediatric Theatres.

Charlotte Deakin, Tayler Blount, Antony Birkitt and Emily Ward ran the Derby 10k for Ward 307 where they work raising £725.

Laura Elliott and her husband, Mark, have done some remarkable fundraising for us raising £1,800 that will go towards buying a new cuddle cot.

Derby Hospitals Choir Thank you to Derby Hospitals Choir for their ongoing fundraising and support for the charity as they celebrate their 20th birthday this year.

Friends Nita Walker and Judith Hart raised an incredible £9,805.50 for Mr Syed Iftikhar’s Gastro-Intestinal fund by organising a charity ball at the Pirelli Stadium earlier in the year. Lesley Adams raised an amazing £3,000 for the Medical Assessment Unit where she works through a charity barn dance and hog roast.

NMU Fundraisers

Etwall and Mickleover Trefoil Guild raised £308 by holding various fundraising events including tombolas, quizzes and donations in lieu of Christmas cards.

Annie Bowen and family raised £536 in memory of Annie’s mum, Janet Reader, with the sale of Janet’s bear collection and memorial and Reiki coffee mornings.

Thank you to Dave Manning who raised £810 while he was Captain of Derby Golf Club and to the members who took part in the various charity events he organised.

Ajay Henry and his band played at the Spot night club. A great time was had by all who went along to their Derby Has Soul night which raised £1,200 in memory of Dot Hesketh. Thank you to Margaret Wilson and the Oakwood Community Association who donated £1,000 to the Nightingale Macmillan Unit (and also kindly donated £1,000 for the Diabetes Department).

Julie Coll and John McGarry raised £881 by hosting a fundraising evening at the Harrington arms in memory of Mick Coll.

Rolls Royce A Site Charity visited the Unit to present an amazing £10,640. We are so appreciative of the work they do to raise funds for us each year.

Anna Skalbania raised £340 by taking part in the Ashbourne Half Marathon. It happened to be the Day Unit Patients’ summer party when she came to present the donation.

Steve Pape, a poet from Ilkeston hosted a book launch to promote his book, ‘Life in the past frame’ raising £610 on the night.

Thanks To Our Runners And Walkers... This year’s Carsington Water Walk was on a lovely sunny day in April and we are delighted that nearly 500 people took part in our fantastic new Colour Run event.

Derby Hospitals Charity’s new £3m appeal to target cancer Cancer can touch us all in some way throughout our lives, whether directly or through a family member or friend. Radiotherapy treatment is one of the tools that will help beat cancer in the East Midlands. The DART appeal aims to raise £3 million for a fourth linear accelerator to offer more timely radiotherapy treatments to help patients fit treatment in around their daily lives and to re-develop the existing small waiting room and courtyard into a new light and airy reception and waiting area.

Clive’s Story Clive was having problems passing water. This was painful and, as his work involved a lot of travelling, it was embarrassing to stand at urinals for minutes at a time unable to urinate. His GP sent him to the hospital where he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. As Clive was self-employed it was important he could carry on with his business of building children’s playgrounds. Radiotherapy treatment was chosen rather than surgery as it meant he could continue to work and arrange his daily hospital appointments around his working day. Clive still works and he still travels to work, often in London, but after 37 sessions is pain free and able to live a normal life.
