COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS December 12, 2017 Brooklin Transportation Master Plan Receives Approval

The Brooklin Transportation Master Plan (TMP) – prepared in conjunction with the Brooklin Community Secondary Plan approved this past October – was initiated in 2014 to create a new, long-term plan for how people and goods will move within and around Brooklin. The Plan, now approved by Council, will provide an integrated framework to support the efficient, safe and connected use of all modes of transportation – including active transportation and transit – throughout Brooklin.

Report PW 35-17: Final Brooklin Transportation Master Plan (TMP) 2018 Special Event Calendar

Each year, more than 200 community events are hosted in Whitby for local residents and visitors. Events play an important role in enhancing the quality of life, as well as tourism, recreation and cultural experiences. Based on a comprehensive review of the Town’s 2017 events, a new 2018 calendar of special events has been approved including a new Family Day event and an Open Streets event. In 2018, all Town-led events will include a pointed focus on inclusivity, active transportation, wayfinding and signage.

Innovation Hub Moves Ahead

The Town’s recently announced Innovation Hub project in Downtown Whitby is one step closer to helping more innovative start-up companies succeed locally. Renovations are underway on the former provincial land registry office – a 9,000 square foot heritage building that will house the new Hub. Architectural design work for the interior of the building is also in progress. The new Hub is expected to open in September 2018.

Report CMS 55-17: Whitby Innovation Hub – Accelerator Town to Become a Bee City

Building on the Town’s current initiatives aimed at conserving and restoring pollinator habitats, the Town will now move forward to become a Bee City. By becoming a Bee City, the Town will join other Canadian communities and Bee City Canada in the protection, promotion and celebration of pollinators. The Town will also commit through the adoption of a Bee City Resolution to further educating the public about the importance of pollinators in our environment.

Whitby Community Beautification Committee Donates to Salvation Army

Mayor Don Mitchell and North Ward Councillor Rhonda Mulcahy joined Sue Green, Jane Austin and Kathy Allam from the Whitby Community Beautification Committee in their presentation of a $1,038 cheque to Charlie Burns, Community and Family Services Director for Whitby’s Salvation Army. The donation was made possible by the proceeds from the 2017 Whitby in Bloom Garden Tour and accompanying rain barrel sales.

This summer, residents were invited to enjoy free, outdoor recreational programming as part of ‘Fresh Air in the Square’ – the first pilot project to launch from the Town’s six-month Colour the Square engagement campaign. To help gauge its success, a number of onsite surveys were conducted to collect feedback. The response received was overwhelmingly positive, with 96 per cent of respondents indicating their support for additional programming in the Square. As part of the Town’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting event, more than 10,000 lights were installed to light up Celebration Square for the holiday season and into the new year.
