COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS March 20, 2018 Five-Year Seniors Strategy Nearly Complete

More than 90 per cent of the action items identified within Whitby’s 2014-2018 Recreation and Leisure Services Seniors’ Strategy are now complete. Highlights of the action items completed over the past five years include the creation of a new Age-Friendly Network and a Seniors’ Elder Abuse Awareness Team, new training opportunities and support to increase online registration, strengthening of community partnerships and program enhancements at the Whitby Seniors’ Activity Centre and other Town facilities. A new five-year strategy will be developed and launched in 2019. The Age-Friendly Network created last June will also continue to advocate on behalf of Whitby’s seniors. In addition, the network will continue to host education workshops and work with local businesses to help them become more age-friendly.

Report CMS 07-18: 2014 – 2018 Recreation and Leisure Services Seniors’ Strategy Update Development of New Youth Strategy to be Initiated in May

Nearly all of the action items contained within the 2013-2018 Recreation and Leisure Services Youth Strategy have been completed, with the new five-year strategy slated for development in 2019. Highlights of the action items completed

as part of the strategy include the opening of a new Youth Room at Henry Street High School, the recognition of Whitby as a Platinum Level Youth Friendly Community in 2015 and the further integration of Whitby youth into the Town’s ongoing activities and decision-making. A survey to collect community feedback on the next strategy will launch during National Youth Week, which runs May 1 to 7.

A new multi-year Corporate IT Strategic Plan has been approved by Council. The Plan sets out the long-term vision for the Town as a tech savvy, municipal leader in the delivery of reliable, sustainable and quality digital services to residents and local businesses. The Plan contains a number of recommendations that will build on the foundation of the Town’s digital services over the next three years. The creation of a Corporate IT Strategic Plan was one of the key recommended action items contained in the Town’s 2016 Service Delivery Review.

COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS March 20, 2018 Planning for the Future of Brooklin Memorial Park

A Master Plan for Brooklin Memorial Park (located on Winchester Road East) will be undertaken in 2019. The park is home to Luther Vipond Memorial Arena, a softball diamond, playground, tennis courts, skate park features and more. The development of the Master Plan will look at each of these elements and how the park can continue to serve the needs of residents well into the future. The development of the new Master Plan will involve extensive public engagement. More details on how the public can provide their feedback will be shared later this year. The park is expected to undergo redevelopment in 2020.

Brock Street Bridge Replacement

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is replacing the Brock Street bridge at Highway 401. Work is expected to begin this spring and take three construction seasons to complete. The MTO has advised that two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained during peak periods throughout the majority of the project and that the road will remain open to traffic.
