The Town has now removed 95 per cent of ash trees located on Town property that were affected by the Emerald Ash Borer. With more than 3,000 trees now replaced, additional new trees will continue to be planted until the end of 2019. For more information, visit whitby.ca/emeraldashborer

Report PW 19-18: Emerald Ash Borer Action Plan Update Station Gallery Box Car Is On the Move

The Box Car at Station Gallery is set to be relocated from its current location at the intersection of Victoria Street and Henry Street to the Elgin County Railway Museum in St. Thomas, Ontario – The Railway City. Due to its deteriorating state, the Box Car can no longer be used as programmed space, however the Railworks Coalition will restore and add it to the museum’s rolling stock collection.

Report CMS 30-18: Station Gallery Box Car Whitby Fire and Emergency Services Releases Annual Report Whitby Fire and Emergency Services (WFES) have released its 2017 annual report. In 2017, WFES received and responded to 5,606 emergency calls – the highest number of calls ever received by the department. Other highlights contained in the report include the addition of a

sixth fire truck and hiring of 32 new firefighters to provide ongoing and rapid response to Whitby’s growing community.

Report FR 03-18: Annual Report Site Plan Approved for Le Nordik Spa

The Site Plan to construct a four season spa and wellness centre on the former Cullen Gardens land has been approved. The proposed development will be the first of its kind in Whitby, consisting of a two-storey main building, spa and wellness related facilities, a restaurant, landscaped grounds and pavilion structures. When completed, the facility is estimated to attract more than 150,000 annual visitors.

Report PL 32-18: Site Plan Application, Nordik Immoblier Chelsea Inc. A New Culture Plan for Whitby

The Town has initiated the development of its first Culture Plan, with the purpose of providing strategic direction to the arts and culture programs, services, and facilities available throughout the community. The Plan will be developed in three phases – research, public engagement, and strategy development and implementation – and is expected to be brought forward for Council approval in late 2019.

COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS June 5, 2018 New Plan Aims to Spur Downtown Development The Town has developed a new draft Community Improvement Plan (CIP) for Downtown Whitby aimed at supporting local businesses and stimulating new investment in the area. CIPs allow municipalities to establish grants, loans, incentives and other programs to encourage private sector investment in development and renovation efforts that seek to improve and revitalize areas or achieve local goals and priorities. The Town’s proposed CIP includes Development Charge Reduction; Cash-in-Lieu of Parking; Tax Increment Equivalent Grant; Façade Improvement Grant / Design Grant; Sign Grant; and, Interior Heritage Building Grant. Each program has a maximum funding amount, specific and general eligibility criteria and an application review process to determine appropriateness. If approved as part of the draft plan, the programs are expected to be made available to the business community later this year. For more information, visit whitby.ca/community-improvement-plan

Creating a More Safe and Connected Downtown Whitby

The Town is currently conducting a Transportation and Pedestrian Safety Action Plan Study which focuses on how people and vehicles move within Downtown Whitby. The purpose of the study is to identify opportunities to help make walking, driving and other forms of transportation in the downtown area more safe, efficient and connected. The study is currently in its second phase, which includes the review of transportation pedestrian safety alternatives. The study is expected to be completed in June 2019.
