National Heritage Week is an integral part of European INTRODUCTION Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union. It is a week long celebration of who we are and where we come from. National Heritage week is co-ordinated by the Heritage Council with support from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Fáilte Ireland. The principal aims of Heritage Week are to promote awareness of the built, cultural and natural heritage, thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation, and to raise awareness in our shared European Heritage. This year the focus of Heritage Week is Built Heritage, and the contribution it makes to our quality of life, jobs and tourism. This booklet is produced by the Heritage Office of Mayo County Council to highlight events happening in Mayo to celebrate Heritage Week 2012. There are over 60 events taking place throughout the county, details of which are included in this booklet. You will also find details of Mayo County Council’s Built Heritage Photography Competition, which will be launched during Heritage Week. In addition to the events listed, the many heritage sites and centres in the county will be open during Heritage Week, so there should be something to suit everyone. Participants are advised to confirm details of events in advance, with the contact person listed for each event. It is advised to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for outdoor events. Heritage Week is a great opportunity to explore and enjoy your heritage – Be part of it. Its part of you! Finally, a special word of thanks to all the event organisers, without their hard work and dedication Heritage Week would not be possible. ROSSERK FRIARY Rosserk Friary was founded circa 1440 for the Third Order of Franciscans on the site of an earlier church. Located in a picturesque setting on the River Moy, 4km from Killala, it is one of the best preserved examples of a Franciscan Friary in Ireland. Rosserk’s interesting Romanesque entrance faces west and leads into a wide nave, at the end of which is the elaborate east window, with fine tracery.
