When we want to boost our motivation, we usually ramp up the intensity of our efforts and try harder. But unless effort is channeled in a direction that benefits the organization and sustained long enough, high intensity is no guarantee of favourable job-related performance outcomes. Quality of effort and persistence, therefore, are as important as intensity. This one-day workshop will reveal your individual motivational profile and provide you with solutions to address the most difficult motivational challenges. You will also acquire the know-how to develop the profile of your team and become a motivational manager. ½½Part of the Certificate in Business Process Improvement 2018 June 13 November 8 2019 May 16

Effective Delegation

6 PDUs / contact hours

$480

Delegation underpins a style of management that allows the members of your team to use and develop their skills and knowledge to their full potential. Without delegation, you lose their full value. Good delegation is primarily about entrusting your authority to others. This means that they can act and initiate independently, and that they assume responsibility with you for certain tasks. However, if something goes wrong, you remain responsible since you are the manager. The trick is to delegate in such a way that things get done but do not get off track. Success in delegation is measured not by how you go about delegating, to whom you delegate, or how often you delegate, but by the results you achieve through delegation. 2018 2019

A great deal is said about the need to manage the people associated with a project (stakeholders), but little is ever provided by way of guidelines on how to do it. This one-day course is full of helpful tools and techniques that guide you from the beginning of the project, when you identify the stakeholders, to a successful end. You will learn how to get the right people involved at the right time, set priorities for requirements, communicate clearly and openly, and prevent enthusiasm for the project from ebbing. The techniques you will learn will increase project buy-in and enhance project success.

Many projects get under way with a sparse, high-level list of requirements. And then—somewhere halfway through the project—someone realizes there is something we didn’t know but should have. Suddenly the project is derailed. Tasks are added to the project, and the schedule slips behind. Gathering requirements as an up-front activity can go only so far. Projects bring about change and the bigger the change, the greater the likelihood of project failure. For the best chance of success, managers must efficiently predict and manage the many types of reactions that may arise when new projects are implemented, whether these reactions come from individuals whose cooperation is essential to implementing the project or from those affected by the changes the project may bring about. This course will guide participants in how to manage change, from the initial notification of a change to the successful completion of the project, when the change becomes the new and fully implemented reality. ½½This course is part of the Advanced Project Management Certificate 2018 June 11, 12 December 12, 13 2019 March 28, 29 August 19, 20

The dollar, particularly in the area of keeping score, impacts all project activities, not just the financial ones. This two-day course provides you with a clear four-step process for managing costs: plan cost management, estimate costs, determine budget, and control costs. You will learn which tools to apply and practical techniques for each step. The skills you will develop will enable you to resolve some problems before they occur and to respond quickly to the rest.

This one-day course is built around the Lean tools that were applied to organizational processes in the introductory course. Here, we will apply them to personal use and deal with the obstacles that diminish productivity. We will explore the 5S process and other variations of the Lean model to eliminate inefficiencies and enhance our ability to produce more with the same (or less) effort, reducing stress as we regain control over our workload.

To deliver project and program results, we face a daily obstacle course of challenges. The ability to pinpoint elements of work that need refining is a key Lean skill. In this course, we will learn to define a problem, identify its root cause(s), validate a response plan, integrate appropriate reporting and authorizations, and check that the correction or refinement has worked. We will base our problem solving on tools designed to guide and support robust business process problem solving and decision making, from problem identification to solution implementation, tweaks and process standardization until the next time the benchmark needs to be revisited.

Writing Effective Executive Summaries $360

Communicating Technical Information $520

A good executive summary must not only distill the key information in a long and often technical report, it must engage the reader’s interest. It is often what “sells” the document or ideas contained in it to your reader, even when your report is not a commercial business plan. In addition to showcasing the document’s highlights, it must present information that is scrupulously accurate and unbiased. This one-day workshop combines theory with hands-on practice to show you how to write clear, specific, and compelling summaries that convey the spirit and essence of the message.

A good technical document isn’t necessarily one that’s well written or highly polished: it’s one that works. Often, the task of writing technical documents falls to those whose main job is not writing, yet nowhere are clarity, precision, and absolute accuracy more important than when conveying technical information. This two-day workshop will teach you how to apply an effective process of planning, drafting, and editing to create excellent technical documents of any length. It will help you feel more confident about communicating technical information and reduce the number of readers who misinterpret information or come back to you for clarification.

Team Writing—One Document, Many Authors $520 The workplace often requires employees to collaboratively produce documents. While the expected length of the document and the number of participants in the writing project can give us an idea of the scope of the challenge ahead, the complexity of “writing by committee” is not exclusively determined by these two factors. This two-day workshop, intended for writers who collaborate with multiple authors and those who consult with stakeholders (internally or externally), will provide you with the necessary tools to carry out your writing project effectively. 2018 2019

Writing for the Web $520 People don’t read web sites: they scan them. You have only a few seconds to get their attention and direct them to the information they are looking for. They expect solid content delivered clearly and efficiently. If they don’t find it, or if they encounter boggy writing, they will move on. It is the technical web designer’s job to provide good navigation and clean page design, but you, as a writer, can support the web designer’s goals with excellent web writing. This two-day workshop will help you develop an effective web writing style that avoids common pitfalls. It will show you how to break up and organize information to prevent information overload and allow your users to “grab and go.” ½½Part of the Certificate in Workplace Writing 2018 July 30, 31 November 22, 23 2019 February 19, 20 May 16, 17

Have you ever read the minutes of a meeting that you attended and found that they did not correspond to your memory of what actually happened? Neither of these experiences is unusual. In this one-day workshop, participants will learn how to record minutes accurately and to maintain a balance between brevity and sufficient data so readers are well-informed but not overloaded with information. GRAMMAR AND STYLE

Practical Grammar: Writing Sound Sentences $810 Grammar is often presented as a set of dull, complicated, or even contradictory rules and is rarely approached with enthusiasm. Yet the most useful aspect of grammar—understanding the basic structure underlying every sentence—is neither dull nor difficult. An antidote to grammatical insecurity, this three-day workshop demystifies both the concept and the terminology of grammar. It explains how to identify and fix common grammar and punctuation errors such as agreement problems, comma splices, and dangling modifiers. Along the way, it provides plenty of practice identifying and correcting grammatical errors in your own writing or someone else’s. ½½Part of the Certificate in Workplace Writing 2018 August 1, 8, 15 September 6, 13, 20 October 3, 10, 17 November 6, 13, 20 2019 January 8, 15, 22 March 4, 11, 18 July 8, 9, 10

Writing Well I $520 It can be a challenge to develop a crisp, clear writing style when we work in a culture where buzzwords abound, and complex and long-winded sentences seem to be the writing norm. Yet everyone appreciates writing that is clear and direct. This two-day workshop gives you tools to help you write clearer, simpler, and more precise sentences without sacrificing content or becoming simplistic. It shows you how to identify and fix trouble spots that muddy meaning, cut the words and phrases that serve no purpose, and fine-tune the ones that do. It will help you develop habits you can rely on to keep your writing clear and sharp. ½½Part of the Certificate in Workplace Writing 2018

Writing Well II $520

A+ Writing $520

A certain mystique surrounds good writers, but writing is a craft, and the more you practise, the better you get. This two-day workshop takes you beyond writing good sentences to writing good documents. You’ll learn the best place to put your main point depending on your purpose and how to develop the concrete content that supports it, how to match writing style and tone to your purpose and audience, and how to achieve that mysterious quality known as “flow.” This workshop is suitable for anyone who has taken Writing Well I or who already knows how to write clear and grammatically correct sentences but wants practice putting them together to write concise and coherent documents that work.

Routine workplace writing rarely asks more of us than the ability to write clearly and organize ideas effectively. Once you have developed good writing skills, you might find yourself lodged in an uninspiring and unchallenging landscape of mundane reports and memos. This two-day workshop is for writers already adept at grammar and composition who want to write material that engages, energizes, and entertains. You’ll learn to write lean and lively prose, create pleasing rhythms, and use sentence structure and rhetorical devices to create special effects. You’ll also learn techniques you can use regularly to keep your skills sharp and your perspective fresh.

The Right Word $360 Writing in Plain Language $360 Writing in plain language does not mean “dumbing down” a text: it means conveying information in a way that intended readers can easily understand. And yet much of modern business and government writing is anything but easily understood. The culprits include vague abstractions, weak verbs, confusing jargon and acronyms, inappropriate passive voice, and poor document design. This one-day course will give you ample hands-on practice clarifying dense, bureaucratic texts and re-crafting them to apply plain-language principles. This course assumes that you have a solid understanding of English grammar, punctuation, and style.

Do you know the difference between a phone that rings continuously and one that rings continually? Should you ask a co-worker to be discrete or discreet about a personal matter? Does the bus go further up the road or farther or does it not matter? Many words in English look or sound alike, yet choosing the wrong one can blur, or even reverse, your intended meaning. This fast-paced and energetic one-day workshop will give you tools to check that your writing is professional and precise. It will also expand your working vocabulary by enabling you to use more of the words you already know with confidence. 2018 2019
