Qualifications Explained

Level 2

Level 3

Level 4

Level 5

Got a question?

Qualifications Explained With so many types of qualifications available, it’s easy to get confused about what they all mean. Here’s a quick overview to help you get to grips with it all and find the qualification type that best suits you. A Levels

BTEC and CACHE Diplomas

NVQs

A Levels can cover the same subjects as GCSEs and students normally pick three or four subjects to study. We also offer GC Sixth Form Career Pathways which combine A Levels with vocational study.

BTECs are all about one particular area of employment, enabling you to take this knowledge forward to a job or further study. CACHE diplomas are similar, but cover the care, health and education sectors. Level 3 BTEC extended diplomas take two years to complete and are equal in difficulty and employers’ perception to three A Levels, but allow you to focus all of your energy on the subject you enjoy the most. If you want to keep your higher education options open, then make sure that the qualification meets the requirements of the course you wish to take.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) demonstrate that a candidate is competent in an area of work based on national occupational standards. You would usually work towards NVQs via apprenticeships, but some are available as full-time taught programmes at GC.

Consider A Levels if... • You want to mix and match subjects that you are interested in. This provides a balance of options when considering what to do next. • You want to follow a well-established route to higher education. Consider alternatives if... • Exams aren’t your strong point — A Level assessments use a lot of exams, so if you find them nerve-racking, this may not be the best option. • You don’t want to choose three or four subjects.

Consider a BTEC or CACHE if… • You know what you want to do for a job, or in which field or sector. • You enjoy being assessed through a range of methods, including a portfolio and practicals. • You prefer coursework to exams — BTECs tend to involve fewer exams than A Levels (although this can vary).

Consider NVQs if... • You want to show that you have the competence to carry out a job properly. • You’re keen to get into work. • You have a clear idea about the type of work you’d like to do. Consider alternatives if... • You want a fixed route to higher education. (You’ll need to make sure that the NVQ meets the entry requirements of your preferred higher education course.) Find out more about our apprenticeships on pages 10-11.

Consider alternatives if... • You aren’t confident in the career or subject area you want to follow. • You want to keep the widest range of higher education options open.

English and maths Achieving your GCSE grade C in English and maths has never been more important to your successful progression from education into the workplace. As well as English and maths forming the entry criteria for many full-time courses

8

and apprenticeships, employers highly value college leavers with good standards of literacy and numeracy. The government has made English and maths a core component of the programme of study for anyone in college who is under 19,

so you will have a chance to build your confidence and qualifications with the help of our expert English and maths tutors.

Qualifications Explained

Level by Level Level 1

Learning at Level 1 is about activities that mostly relate to everyday situations and may be linked to fundamental job competence.

Level 2

Learning at Level 2 involves building knowledge and skills in relation to an area of work or a subject area, and is appropriate as a starting point for many job roles.

Level 3

Level 3 involves obtaining detailed knowledge and skills in a subject; appropriate for people wishing to progress to higher education, for working independently, or in some areas supervising and training others in their field of work.

Foundation GCSEs grades D-F, certificates, diplomas

Intermediate GCSEs grades A*-C, diplomas, intermediate apprenticeships, NVQ Level 2

Advanced A Levels, diplomas, extended diplomas, advanced apprenticeships, NVQ Level 3

Level 4

HNCs, higher apprenticeships, NVQ Level 4

Level 5

HNDs and foundation degrees

Got a question?

Level 4 qualifications include specialist learning that focuses on entering specific employment. See page 92.

Level 5 qualifications focus on a student’s ability to study subjects in depth, and critically, to gain an advanced understanding specifically related to their chosen profession. See page 92.

FOR 2015 Two-year Level 2 diplomas Level 2 diplomas give you an opportunity to develop your skills in your chosen vocational area and gain, over two years, improved maths and English qualifications. Employers identify that having a full Level 2 qualification, good level of English and maths, and employability skills are essential in order for you to be a successful employee, so this route is ideal if you do not currently have the entry qualifications to go straight into a one-year Level 2 diploma. In year one (Level 1): Vocational skills development in your chosen subject area and preparation towards the Level 2 qualification. English and maths qualifications. Work-related activity and employability skills. In year two (Level 2): Complete a Level 2 diploma or a traineeship in your chosen subject area. Improve your English and maths levels. Work-related activity and employability skills. Entry criteria for all Level 1 courses is three GCSEs at grade E or above. You’ll find more information about Level 2 diplomas available throughout the course section of this guide.

If you’re still not sure which qualification and/or level would suit you, contact Student Services on 0345 155 2020 and we’ll be happy to help.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships Gloucestershire College is proud to be the leading apprenticeship training provider in the county. We currently work with over 600 employers to train over 900 apprentices across 17 industry areas. Apprenticeships today aren’t just for jobs like plumbing and carpentry, although we offer apprenticeships for those too. You can find over 40 apprenticeships at Gloucestershire College, covering a huge variety of industries and job roles. They are a great new alternative to university or full-time study. Many of our students are choosing an apprenticeship as a debt-free solution to education. In most cases you’ll also have a chance to climb the apprenticeship ladder, working your way up from intermediate apprenticeships to advanced apprenticeships, and now higher apprenticeships which can be at the same level as a university degree.

What is an apprenticeship?

We proudly deliver apprenticeships with over 600 employers, including:

An apprenticeship is made up of several qualifications, plus a work element, because you’ll be working in a proper job for a real company. You’ll spend most of your time with an employer, and depending on the apprenticeship you have chosen, will spend some time at college to complete your learning. Apprenticeship elements: Competency Element Demonstrate your workplace abilities and prove that you can do specific job-related tasks. Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Learn about your rights and responsibilities in the workplace, covering things such as health and safety, working hours and contracts of employment. Knowledge Element Gain a broader understanding about the industry in which you work. Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) Develop a series of underpinning skills that employers are looking for. Transferable Skills Improve your maths, English and IT skills. These qualifications also cover more general work-related skills such as communication, problem solving and using new technologies.

Access to Higher Education

Access to Higher Education Course shortcode: AHE01 L3

CH

GL RFD 1yr

24£

If you are a mature student who missed the opportunity to go to university, Access to Higher Education is designed specifically for you. Gloucestershire College is the first stop on your journey to university, with excellent tutoring and support to give you the qualifications you need to progress. You’ll also be given guidance on the university application process. You will follow one of four diploma pathways, allowing progression into areas such as midwifery, nursing, social work and teaching. In addition, all students get the opportunity to take GCSE English and maths alongside the course, if you do not already have these. Once you’ve completed your qualification, it will be valid for three years, giving you time to gain valuable work experience before starting your desired degree programme. Extra help with English and maths qualifications Four popular subject pathways

Entry Requirements

Qualification valid for three years Support for university application Please note, not all pathways are available at all campuses. Please contact us to find out which pathways are available at each campus.

Education Pathway

This is for you if you are interested in teaching in a primary or secondary school, perhaps with a view to specialise in English, history, maths or science at university. You will choose three main subjects from chemistry, higher maths, history, literary studies, physics, psychology and sociology.

Humanities Pathway This course offers the flexibility to choose three main subjects from history, law, literary studies, psychology and sociology, depending on your higher education pathway. This allows you to study a wide range of subjects at university, for example you may want to go on to study creative writing, English, history, journalism, psychology or sociology.

24

26

Health and Social Care Pathway This is ideal if you are interested in studying diagnostic imaging, midwifery, nursing, paramedic science, physiotherapy, radiotherapy or sports therapy at university. You will take three main subjects: biology, psychology and sociology.

Science Pathway This pathway is ideal for you if you want to study a science-based course at degree level, such as animal science, biological science, chemistry, environmental science or forensic science. You will choose three main subjects from biology, chemistry, higher maths, physics and psychology, depending on your higher education pathway.

If you take out a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan, you won’t have to repay it until you’re earning over £21k. If you go on to complete a university degree after taking the Access to Higher Education course, the loan is entirely written off.

You will need to be able to show potential and motivation to study at Level 3 (equivalent of A Level) and above. You will also need to show an awareness of the financial and social implications of returning to study. Although you do not need to have any existing qualifications, as part of the application process all applicants will need to take a short test to demonstrate a standard of English equivalent to Level 2 (the same level as GCSE grade C) and numeracy skills equivalent to Level 1 (or Level 2 for those looking to study higher maths or physics). Please be aware that most UK universities require GCSE English and/or maths at C grade or above, so if you do not have these already you will need to complete them as part of the access course to be able to progress on to university. If your first language is not English, you will need a full ESOL (English for Speakers or Other Languages) Level 2 or an equivalent qualification such as IELTS (International English Language Testing System). The course is designed for mature students and is not intended to be an alternative route into higher education for students who have recently studied A Levels, GCSEs or a similar course. It is recommended that students have at least one year out of formal education before applying.

We’ll also introduce you to key subjectspecific areas so that by the end of the course you’ll be ready to progress straight on to the Access to Higher Education course, and then on to university.

The Foundation to Access course will enable you to: Undertake GCSE English and/or maths, if you don’t already have these qualifications, or if you don’t have them at an appropriate level for university application. In 2013 the government decided to make some changes to A Levels. For some subjects these changes will take place in September 2015, for others in September 2016 or 2017. AS and A Levels will be separate, making the AS qualification free standing. At the moment, although AS qualifications are awarded in their own right, assessment also contributes to students’ final A Level grades. This will no longer happen in some subjects. Instead AS and A Level qualifications will be separately assessed at the end of each level of the course. This also gives students the opportunity to decide whether they wish to complete a full A Level qualification in a subject, or whether they just wish to take the one-year AS Level.

Higher Education and Progression

Higher Education and Progression There are lots of opportunities available after you finish your college course. You may want to study the next level of your course, a degree or undertake a higher apprenticeship – which are available in many subject areas at GC. We’re not just an alternative to university; we are a stepping stone to higher education and professional qualifications. Higher Education

Higher education (HE) is university level learning that can lead to a range of qualifications. With the UK job market demanding an increasing number of qualified workers to fill skills gaps, more people are studying HE qualifications than ever before. Last year 450 GC students successfully went on to study HE courses at universities and colleges across the country, including 200 BTEC and CACHE diploma students. HE students generally apply for a loan to cover tuition fees, and can apply for a further loan or grant to support themselves through study. Although any loan will need to be repaid, the terms are very generous, and repayments don’t start until you are earning over £21,000. Now is a great time to study a HE qualification and we have plenty to offer at GC!

Foundation Degrees

A foundation degree is equivalent to two-thirds of a bachelor’s degree and can be studied on a full- or part-time basis. Our vocational foundation degrees combine

92

study with workplace learning in your chosen industry – with the option to ‘top up’ with additional study to achieve a full degree after college. For more information, and to view the full list of course options, visit www.gc-higher.co.uk

Higher National Certificates and Diplomas (HNC/HND)

HNCs and HNDs are work-related higher education qualifications that focus on giving you skills you can use in a particular job – and are highly desirable to employers. Available to study on a full- or part-time basis, a HNC is generally equivalent to the first year of university and a HND, the first two years. The length of study depends on which option you choose.

likely supported by GCSE grades A* to C, or an approved Access to Higher Education Certificate. Mature students may have a more varied profile, which could include extensive work experience and/or a range of professional qualifications in their chosen sector. HNC/HND courses include Business, Computing, Construction, Engineering, Music, Photography, Theatrical Production and many more. For more information, and the full list of course options, visit www.gc-higher.co.uk

Higher Apprenticeships

Unlike many degrees, these courses are vocational and therefore can lead straight to a career. They’re also a great stepping stone to a higher qualification, as you can ‘top up’ a HNC or HND with extra studies to convert it to a bachelor’s degree.

Higher apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with studying a degree-level qualification, and range from Level 4 (equivalent to HNC) to Level 6 (equivalent to bachelor’s degree). Gloucestershire College launched an exciting new series of higher apprenticeships in September 2015, across the engineering, IT and professional sectors.

Generally, entry requires a recognised Level 3 qualification in a related subject,

Higher Apprenticeships include Accounting, Cyber Security, Management,

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions Why choose to come to Gloucestershire College? The College is a great place to study. We’re committed to seeing all our students find the right path in life, so we’ll help them find the right courses to begin with, learn as much as they can, enjoy practical hands-on experience of the world of work, and become as well-qualified and employable as they can be. How successful are GC students? We’re proud of our success rates – for instance, our A Level pass rate at the Forest of Dean GC Sixth Form was 99.2% in 2015 – in fact, many courses have 100% success rates. You don’t just have to take our word for it – Ofsted recently described us as providing “excellent resources and a wide range of extra opportunities for learners to enhance their learning in a purposeful, attractive and welcoming environment”. How much will it cost? If you are aged 18 or under when you start a full-time course, there will be no tuition fees to pay. If you’re unsure try using the online fee calculator on the website – you simply input a few details and it will calculate the course fees for you. There may be a contribution needed towards the costs of books, materials and educational trips, but that depends on each course. If you are are experiencing financial difficulty please contact Student Services to find out about the support available.

What can GC students do after studying at the College? We offer courses all the way from entry level awards, GCSE and A Level equivalents to higher education, so once you’ve completed your course, there’s almost certainly an option to take study to the next level. You can also progress on to an apprenticeship, university or study elsewhere. Studying with us can also lead straight into industry, whatever route you take. It may involve a job with a huge multi-million turnover organisation or in a much smaller firm with fewer than 10 employees. You might even decide to go it alone and set up your own business! What if a student realises they’ve made a mistake after they have started? We hope all our students make the right choice and love their studies, but if you find the course isn’t what you expected, or you want to try a different option you can let us know and we’ll help. We want all our students to be happy and successful, and will help you find the right course, even if you’re a few weeks in. Students should speak to their Learning Mentor if they have any concerns about their choice of course.

Can GC students get a part-time job alongside their Gloucestershire College course? Absolutely – in fact, we recommend it, both to help financially and for the experience. If you would like help finding a part-time job, we have a local job vacancies bulletin board run by Student Services. Please note that you should still set aside around eight hours each week for private study outside class for College assignments and projects. Is there someone at college who GC students can go to for support? The Student Services team is committed to assisting and supporting students while at college. They can be approached about anything, including accommodation; careers guidance; assistance with money matters; disability support; childcare; extra language or maths help; and dyslexia. As well as course tutors, you will be assigned a Learning Mentor who will work very closely with you to ensure you are progressing well with studies and achieving targets, as well as helping to celebrate your successes!

My son/daughter had personal or learning support at school. Will they still get help at college? If your son/daughter has additional learning support requirements please highlight this on the application form and we can arrange for support and specialist equipment to be available from their first day with us. Our dedicated support teams are happy to discuss your son/daughter’s requirements with you. How will I get to the College? The bus! Gloucestershire County Council offers subsidised travel to students aged under 19 who live further than three miles from the College. You can apply for the pass two months before starting your course by calling Gloucestershire County Council direct on 01452 425000. You can also speak to Student Services about travel – whatever your circumstances, there is a range of support available for transport, depending on circumstances and age. The College has joined forces with Stagecoach to offer much reduced prices on all regular Stagecoach West Bus services. Journeys in the Cheltenham and Gloucester area will cost £1.20 for a single journey, £11 for a weekly pass, or £38 for a four week pass when a valid student ID pass is shown to the driver. Journeys slightly further afield such as Tewkesbury, the Forest of Dean and Stroud will also benefit from cheaper fares – currently £1.50 for a single pass, £14 per week, or £48 for four week pass. Visit www.stagecoachbus.com for the latest prices and information. If you drive, parking is available at the Cheltenham and Royal Forest of Dean Campuses. Please see the website for details. Bike racks are also available at all campuses. What are my obligations as a parent and what do you expect of my son/ daughter? If your son/daughter is under 18 it is your responsibility to make sure they attend all lectures, as education is compulsory at age 17 and below. All students sign our Student Agreement with us when they enrol, under which they agree to abide by a range of aspects of student life, from attendance and working hard, to personal behaviour and safety around campus. I don’t meet the entry requirements, but I have other experience and qualifications - can I still join that course? Direct entry may be considered for some courses on an individual basis, depending on experience. Alternatively we can work with you to find another course that will enable you to get the qualifications you need.
