Welcome to the World Family Links Antenatal Programme

http://coventry.fsd.org.uk

Welcome to the World The ‘Welcome to the World’ programme is an eight-week group course for those expecting a baby. Delivered by practitioners with specialist Family Links training, the programme aims to: • Give an opportunity for expectant parents to explore their roots, traditions, hopes and fears for the future. • Develop strong communication between parents by sharing experiences and ideas. • Increase parents’ reflective functioning and understanding of their baby: how he develops before and after birth, his physical and emotional needs, the importance of attunement, attachment and empathy. • Increase parents’ understanding of their own emotional health and the need to nurture themselves to provide the best opportunities for the baby to grow and flourish. • Enable parents to think about their future as parents, as a couple and as a family. • Increase parents’ understanding of the benefits of breast feeding and the practical tasks of caring for a new baby. “I am grateful to the group because I have learnt so much, and my partner has succeeded in quitting smoking for when the baby is born.”

Triple P Parenting courses http://coventry.fsd.org.uk

How can Triple P help me? Triple P courses can help you in your role as a parent to have a more positive family life.

What is Triple P? Triple P is a parenting programme that over the last 30 years has helped thousands of families across the world by offering information, support and practical parenting advice. Triple P is a great way to meet other parents, learn parenting strategies that work and get the help you need. It’s designed to suit your needs with a variety of options including one to one support and group programmes. Best of all Triple P is free and group programmes are often supported with a free crèche service.

Triple P courses are open to all Coventry parents and carers who have children aged 0 - 16 years. The table below explains the different types of programmes available. Types of support

Brief Description

Triple P session

One off session for parents who are interested in hearing about ways to parent positively

Triple P one to one help

Help for parents who have children with a specific behaviour issue (e.g. tantrums, swearing) or intensive help for more challenging behaviour.

Triple P groups

A great opportunity to meet other parents and find out ways to have a good relationship with your child and parent positively

All courses are run in Coventry by trained practitioners.

Triple P top 5 tips for parents 1. Give your child lots of physical affection very young children often like hugs, cuddles, and holding hands. Older children may like high fives and winks. 2. Give your child lots of descriptive praise when they do something that you would like to see more of, e.g., “Thank you for doing what I asked straight away” and “you did really well with your homework”. 3. Young children are more likely to misbehave when they are bored, so provide lots of engaging indoor and outdoor activities e.g. playdough, colouring in, cardboard boxes, dress ups, play houses, etc. 4. Set clear limits on your child’s behaviour. Sit down and have a family discussion on the rules in the home. Let your child know what the consequences will be if they break the rules. 5. Look after yourself. It is difficult to be a calm, relaxed parent if you are stressed, anxious, or depressed. Try to find time every week to let yourself unwind or do something that you enjoy.

Coventry parents who attended Family Links courses said... “The programme has opened my eyes that I’m not the only one going through this. It made me aware of what I can do differently.”

“This course has made an enormous difference to my family life putting me back in the driving seat and greatly improving my relationship with my children and the amount of fun we have together.”
