Fit2Go is a healthy lifestyle programme, currently being delivered in

every primary school in Blackpool.

All year 4 pupils can receive a totally FREE programme of increased physical activity and health education that includes healthy lifestyle classroom based sessions and physical activity sessions that are organised around the school day. (For full programme see School Sport Offer) The classroom based sessions are delivered over six weeks and include interactive activities to capture pupils’ attention such as the Eatwell plate and snacks and drink mats. These allow pupils to see how much of which foods and drinks they should, or should not, be consuming. Fit2Go aims to encourage children to live a healthy lifestyle, take part in regular exercise and to join in with local sports clubs and community programmes which will ultimately improve their overall health and wellbeing.

Healthy Lifestyle Quizzes

Every Primary School that takes part in Fit2Go over the course of the year gets invited to Bloomfield Road Stadium for free to take part in a Fit2Go Healthy Lifestyle Quiz. The quiz re-visits topics that were covered during classroom delivery and assess the level of information the pupils have retained. Six schools are invited each term to test their knowledge against each other with the winning school receiving a signed Blackpool FC prize.

Fit2Go Festival

Primary Schools are given the opportunity to attend the Fit2Go festival, which takes place annually, with over 1200 young people attending each year at no cost to school. Activities take place on the pitch at Bloomfield Road and include football, tag rugby and athletics. Exercise to music is a very different activity that also takes place which is always thoroughly enjoyed by everybody including all of the teachers!

High School Fit2Go

Fit2Go is also being delivered in high schools across Blackpool. This is an extension of the existing primary school Fit2Go programme and aims to help high school students understand how to live a healthy lifestyle and overcome some of the problems that they may face at a particularly confusing time in their lives.

Family Fit2Go

The Family Fit2Go programme builds on the Fit2go project, taking Fit2Go home, making the whole family aware of what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle. Family Fit2Go is FREE of charge, and consists of interactive one hour sessions, looking at how to lead a healthy lifestyle together as a family. Each week covers a different topic which can help to make your family Fit2Go!

Blackpool FC Community Trust are offering each family member that attends every session a free ticket to a Blackpool FC home match as an incentive to encourage participation

Foundations of Social and Emotional Development

Presenter: Dr Heather Henderson, Director of the Social Development Laboratory at the University of Miami Audience: Early Years Staff Aims:

Dr Heather Henderson explores children’s social development in the context of the networks of relationships and environments they experience. The early origins of social interaction are described in terms of innate preferences and capabilities that quickly become co-ordinated with each other and with social partners. The central role of co-ordinated social interactions in the development of a wide range of skills is discussed. Examples of within-child factors that alter early social interations are provided as a context for considering the cascading effects of early biases or deficits on the development of later more complex behaviours. The importance of targeting core social abilities through intervention at the level of the individual, relationships, and contexts is discussed To book your place email [email protected]

The Impact of Maternal Depression on the Transition to Parenthood

Dr Jack Shonkoff offers insight into the current state of the ‘Frontiers of Innovation’, what needs to happen next and why Alberta is at the gateway of innovation. He demonstrates the need for a new community of change agents to understand, design, drive and deliver effective programs of early intervention that build adult capabilities as well as focussing on the child. The field requires leaders to use new science and short-cycle feedback to advance policies and practice. To book your place email [email protected]

Residual Effects of Early Life Stress into Adulthood: Biological Mechanisms

Presenter: Matthew Hill, PhD from the University of Calgary Audience: Aims:

Early Years Staff Dr Matthew Hill examines stress’s many shapes and flavours. Some forms of stress are good and help us grow by providing us with an opportunity to overcome a challenge, and others can be detrimental and weigh us down with anxiety and worry. Development is a very plastic and vulnerable period during which the biological development of the stress systems is ongoing and sensitive to disruption. This presentation focuses on how early life adversity can modulate the development of the stress systems to create a heightened state of stress perception in adulthood that increases vulnerability to mental illnesses, such as depression, as well as an array of inflammatory and metabolic conditions. The ‘places’ where learning happens can have a significant effect on how a young person engages with a subject or an idea. Learning outside the classroom can happen at almost any time and almost anywhere - outdoors or indoors: in the school grounds, on the high street, in the local park, in museums and art galleries, on mountain tops and rivers, in Britain’s most remote places, or elsewhere in the world. As with teaching ‘inside the classroom’, planning and preparation are key to successful LOtC and, to assist with this, Blackpool Council offers many training opportunities Title:

Blackpool Educational Standards and Effectiveness 2015/16 Pupil Achievement & Attainment The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is not a youth organisation and it does not have members. It is a programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities designed for use by all agencies having a concern for the development of young people, but the scheme is available to all young people aged 14 to 25 whether they are members of a youth organisation or not. Schools in particular, are encouraged to run the award as it helps young people develop the skills and attitudes they need to become more rounded, confident adults and these are qualities that colleges, universities and employers are attracted to. The scheme is voluntary, entry must be a participant’s free choice and it is not competitive. In order to facilitate the availability of the scheme, there is a national framework and in Blackpool, there is a DofE manager, who oversees all centres that wish to run the award under the Local Authority’s licence. If you would like to know more about the award or how to go about starting a group, visit the DofE website and/or contact the Dof E manager for Blackpool: For more information contact Anna Elgee E: [email protected] T: 01253 476613

Blackpool Educational Standards and Effectiveness 2015/16 Services for Students

Blackpool Fylde & Wyre Children’s University Schools Blackpool schools at both primary and secondary levels have been members of the Children’s University Trust for a number of years and are supported by the Council to engage in promoting and celebrating children’s learning, which takes place outside normal school hours and in settings other than school. The schools support independent research findings that children’s engagement in these learning experiences can impact significantly on their attendance, attitudes and behaviour. They are keen to offer learning opportunties within school and to promote others within the local area.

Children Our aim is to help you find exciting, creative learning opportunities which you will enjoy and where you will gain new skills and knowledge. This may be in the after school or lunchtime clubs or with other organisations, such as dance and sports clubs, theatre groups or cadets. There are also learning activities at the Zoo, the RNLI and the local museums, to name but a few of our partners; we can signpost you to these too. As a member of Children’s University, you can record all of these in a Passport to Learning and we will be happy to celebrate all your extra learning in your school’s graduation ceremony.

Parents/carers If you are looking for ways to help your child along the road to becoming a confident learner, Children’s University can offer a range of opportunities to support this. By engaging, on a voluntary basis, in learning activities outside the normal school day, children take more responsibility for their learning and can develop skills and knowledge, which help with their formal schoolwork. Furthermore, their involvement is recognised and celebrated by Children’s University, which aims to inspire them to seek more learning experiences and aim high for the future.

Central Graduation

Children’s University Central Graduation, held annually at the Winter Gardens and hosted by our Chancellor, Bev Robinson, who is also the Principal of Blackpool and the Fylde College, follows on from the school graduations. This special event recognises those children who have been involved with Children’s University for 3 years or more and celebrates their committment, resilience and enthusiasm for the programme. It directly follows the college’s own graduation ceremony, giving the children a real feel for lifelong learning and guaranteeing a special experience for all involved. We are able to provide sessions for both KS1 and KS2 On site we have examples of photovolaic cells, wind turbines, solar water heating, passive ventilation, high levels of insulation and a combined heat and power unit. A guided walk around the Solaris Centre looking at how the technologies work and why we have them is included. Also covered are technologies we don’t have such as heat-pumps. A model car demonstrating how a fuel-cell works can be brought to school as well as a small photofoltaic model and other props to demonstrate climate change issues. Also covered are habitats either in the Solaris Centre grounds, where we have a pond and various flower and shrub beds, on the beach looking at the rockpools at South Beach or other areas. We can also come to school and look at habitats in/near the school grounds. South Beach cleans are carried out monthly and local schools are welcome to join in. Not only do we collect the litter but we record it and work out where it’s from and who might have dropped it. For more information contact David McGrath E: [email protected] 73

We support 1000s of unpaid carers of all ages in this area some as young as 5 years old! Carers are unpaid family members or friends of any age, who look after someone who is frail, has a physical or mental illness, disability or problem with drugs or alcohol. Carers Trust Fylde Coast exists to make a ‘Better Life for Carers’. Young carers help with washing, cleaning, cooking, paying the bills, booking appointments, listening and offering emotional support and are particularly vulnerable. As a consequence, their school attendance, concentration and self esteem can all suffer. To support the whole family, we are now able to deliver the M-PACT Programme (Moving Parents and Children Together) which is part of the HeadStart Big Lottery funding pilot which Blackpool is part of and it aims to increase resilience in children.

M-PACT will allow us to work intensively with parents and children to look at the issues relating to parental substance misuse on family relationships and children. The programme will be delivered to groups of families and explore the understanding of addiction, beliefs and effects on family life. Run over 8 weekly sessions, it will also develop family skills in planning for good and bad times and improving communication within the home.

Unity, Highfield, Claremont, The Willows, Marton or Roseacre school.

The programme is available for families with children aged 10-14 who attend
