We Are The Church The United Methodist Church at 43 Concord Street, Peterborough, New Hampshire, was dedicated to the worship of God on Sunday, September 16, 1840. J. G. Dow, presiding elder, preached the dedicatory sermon. The First Methodist Episcopal Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church was formed on April 10, 1839. Societies were formed by most Protestant churches as members felt it was improper for a church to own property. The charter clearly states “any male of good moral character and 21 years” could be a member. The Church is now known as the United Methodist Church, the result of the merger of The Methodist Church and The Evangelical Brethren Church in 1968. This event is represented in the logo by the cross and two flames merging at the base. The earliest Methodist services, beginning in 1819, were conducted by traveling preachers. Before the construction of the church building, the congregation met in homes or schoolhouses and often in the Town Hall, which was then on Concord Street. It is now a private home between the Methodist Church and the Congregational Church. Several leading men of the Society personally bought the land and building immediately north of the Town Hall. The house was moved to the north side of the lot and became the parsonage, served as such for many years, and is now known as the Wesley House. Then, the vacant lot became the building site for our Methodist Church. In June 1840, it was voted to appropriate $1600 to build a meetinghouse. The lot, church building and parsonage furnishings cost a total of $2429. Discussions during planning meetings included the question as to having a steeple or not. The latter was more in keeping with the tradition of plain clothing, no jewelry and unpretentious churches. The decision was to have a modest spire. It will be noticed that the steeple is now shorter than seen in early photographs. A portion was removed when it had become decayed by weather and would have to be replaced. The decision was made to not replace. Oddly enough, the pulpit and railing were reversed from the present arrangement. Originally, the congregation sat in purchased or rented pews on a slightly inclined floor, facing the entrances that flanked the pulpit and railing area. It 1846, it was voted to reverse the pulpit and pews, but nothing happened until 1853, when it was again voted, and the change was made. The section now known as the Marion Bagley Fellowship Hall was built in 1993. It replaced a smaller attached structure, date of construction unknown.
A hymn reminds us The church is not a building; the church is not a steeple; The church is not a resting place; the church is a people. I am the church! You are the church! We are the church together! The first Sunday school classes were formed for adults. They soon extended to include children, and classes continue until this day. The women’s organization, originally known as the Ladies’ Aid Society and now known as United Methodist Women, has always contributed to the upkeep of the church and parsonage and special projects. In the early days, this was done by tirelessly producing public dinners. A public notice in 1897 invited the public to a chicken pie supper, the menu consisting of chicken pie, scalloped and mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, baked beans, pastry, tea and coffee, all for 20 cents. On another occasion, a more modest menu of baked beans, brown bread, pastry, etc was offered for 15 cents. The Methodist Men’s charter is dated 1954, with a list of the men then joining, some still known in the church. The men’s organization has always worked to keep the church in good maintenance. They also produced public dinners and were well-known for their annual horn pout suppers. Our oldest member is George Eastman, a youthful 97 years. He has been an active supporter, serving in many capacities. For many years he sang in the choir, along with his two sisters and his father who sang in the male quartet. George and his wife Fern joined the church in 1941. Their names can be seen in the original church membership book where they were entered with the other Eastman family names. In 1926, the Baptist Church in Peterborough closed, and its 30 members joined the Methodist Church. In 1981, 41 members of the PUMC congregation joined the then pastor to form a new church in Peterborough, known as Trinity Evangelist. Today the congregation is composed of families not only from Peterborough but from many towns in the Monadnock region. It is active in missions, local and national, has Sunday school for both children and adults, and an inspiring choir. Our doors are open to all who would like to explore a deep spiritual life, service to the community, and a supportive fellowship.
