President’s Corner

How quickly this year has flown by! Here we are at our December meeting again. I hope we don't have the same icy weather we had last year. I enjoy seeing what everyone has done over the year, and I'd hate to have to cancel two years in a row! Wasn't our weekend with Diane Ericson fabulous? She's so creative and I came away with so many great ideas, especially looking at Goodwill shirts with a different eye. I haven't played in paint like that for ages. It was fun thinking of different ways to use her stencils, and her trunk show was really inspiring. Watch your email! The Board is sending out a survey to see what your interests are so we can better plan our events. It's short so I hope you will take just a few minutes and let us know what you think! Congratulations to Julie Rotherham for getting second place in the national Anyone Can Win Contest, 18 and under category. How exciting that someone from our guild won a prize! Don't forget the President's Challenge for 2017 - Shop Your Stash! Log your entries! More details are on Page 6, but the main idea is that in 2017 we're using things from our stash. We've had well over 100 entries already, and four people have won random draw prizes from the entries. Make something from your stash! Win prizes! Happy Sewing!

Community Service

It seems like everywhere we look, we see people in need. From hurricane victims and our neighbors escaping fires in the Columbia River Gorge, to local people struggling to have their basic needs met, it’s clear there are abundant opportunities to use our sewing skills to help others. Several neighborhood groups have meetings dedicated to Community Service sewing. The Vancouver Group recently made drawstring bags for veterans, the Quilt Group worked on quilt tops for Hurricane Harvey victims, and the Serger Group will be making Fleece Hats and Christmas Stockings (see article on next page) for community service at their October meeting. Check the schedule in this newsletter, or contact the group leader for more details.

Please note that there has been a change at Randall Children’s Hospital. They no longer take car seat blankets, but welcome baby blankets, which need to be a bit larger. (See the article on the next page and the details below.) We received lovely thank-you notes from the staff for the blankets that Marnie recently delivered. They are clearly very excited and grateful to receive them.

Community Service:

Christmas Stockings I was recently contacted by the staff at Interior Office Solutions in downtown Portland. Two years ago this company did a service project that involved making Christmas stockings from fabric samples they get from their vendors, filling them with toys and other needed items for children from newborn to age 18, and donating them to Human Solutions, a local organization that supports low income and homeless families. They are doing it again this year, with the goal of donating 200 stockings. She is seeking help to sew up the stockings, and asked if our guild members would be interested. They are willing to cut all the pieces and make kits for us. The backs are generally one piece, and the fronts are usually 3-5 pieces. They are not lined, and are more practical than pretty, given the fabrics they have to choose from. The fabrics are all woven, and denim weight or lighter. As I get more information and some kits, I'll let you know how you can be part of this project. Jacqueline Villnave, Community Service [email protected]

BABY BLANKETS

Make Baby Blankets, not Car Seat Blankets!

CRS has been sewing blankets for the Car Seat Program at Randall Children's Hospital for several years. This program has concluded but the need is still high for hand made baby blankets. Some of the requirements have changed, so please review these before starting a new blanket. Randall staff, parents and patients are so appreciative of all the wonderful service you do for them. Desired Sizes: ** Sizes have changed.** Each side must be at least 28" and no bigger than 36". (No 24" blankets as before!) Blankets don't have to be square, rectangle blankets are fine. Fabric: One side needs to be baby soft: fleece, flannel, Minky. The other side can be one of the above or cotton. If you want to use up scraps to piece fleece, flannel or cotton to make one side of a blanket, or you want to practice your machine quilting on it, go ahead. Just keep one side baby soft. Colors: Keep in mind that 50% of babies are boys, so please continue to make boy blankets as well as cute and lovely girl blankets. Sample Instructions: For fleece (60" wide), get 3/4 - 1 yard pieces, & cut in half parallel to the selvedge. With 1/2" seams, you will have a 29" wide by 26" - 35" long blanket. Blanket styles - (1) Sew 2 pieces right sides together, leaving a gap in the seam. Turn the blanket through the gap and slip stitch the opening closed. Topstitch around the edge. (2) Self-mitered blanket with two unequal fabric pieces, see video www.youtube.com/ watch?v=lqwdNqMZ8Ro Questions? Contact Marnie Murray [email protected]

My NEW RED SHOES

My New Red Shoes held their annual ‘Pack for Pride’ event on August 9th and 10th. Sharon Sink and Megan Garvey volunteered to pack individually selected gift bags for some of the hundreds of children that the program serves in our area. Sharon commented on how nice it was to see how our contributions were being used in the local community. The organization was also featured on Fox 12 News as the

recipient of a “Be The Change” award, complete with video showing volunteers filling the bags. Even though the new school year has started, we will continue making the gift bags for My New Red Shoes. They are a quick and easy project, and can be made out of smaller pieces of fabric. It’s a great way to use some of the sample donations we’ve received from Columbia Sportswear or fabric from our meeting FreeCycles.

"It was good to see what happens to all those bags our guild helped sew." Sharon Sink COLUMBIA RIVER SEWING, www.columbiariversewing.org

What's OUt There... The Many Kinds of Bobbin Lace

Recently I went to the Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival. This year's theme was lace. We have some amazingly talented lacemakers in the Portland Metro area! There was a beautiful exhibit of various kinds of lace. The main categories of handmade lace are needle lace, bobbin lace and decorated nets. Needle lace is created with needles or shuttles, with one thread. Examples include tatting, crochet or knitted lace. Netted lace is created by applying the pattern to a net ground. Bobbin lace uses many threads held on bobbins and the pattern is created by weaving or twining the many threads in a certain order. Bobbin lace was first made in the mid-1400s. It evolved from braids and other small trims and became more and more elaborate over time. Belgium is where it is thought to have originated, but there was a close connection to Italy as well. Bobbins had several functions. They store the thread for the lace, they act as handles to move the thread, and they weight the threads to keep tension against the pins. The pattern is laid on a pillow and pins hold the threads in place. Handmade lace was expensive and highly sought after. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the handmade lace industry played an important

part in the economies of many European countries. Members of royalty, the aristocracy, and the Catholic Church were the main consumers for fine laces. Men and women competed to display the most exquisite lace on their fashionable clothes—King Charles I of Great Britain, for example, bought 1600 yards of lace to ornament his shirts. Since lace was often as expensive as jewelry, this must have cost literally a king's ransom! By 1600, high quality lace was being made in many centers across Europe including Flanders, Spain, France and England. Lace making was a very important part of contributing to the household income. Girls who learned could save money for their own dowry. When married, they could contribute to the household. If they were widowed, they could support themselves and their children. Vermeer's painting, Lacemaker, shows a common household scene of a girl making bobbin lace. She may have even made her own lace collar. Photos are some of the many beautiful examples of types of bobbin lace made by local women artisans. If you are interested in making lace, or seeing beautiful examples, the Portland Lace Society Annual Lace Day will be on October 14th. Details at: www. portlandlacesociety.com

Neighborhood and Special Interest Groups News

EASTSIDE DAY NG, Sharon Sink:

Ruthann Carter and I presented our annual 'Christmas in July' and then took it one step further by having group members try their hand at making sewing weights. These are handy tools to have in your sewing room. They were made with fabric, decoupaging sewing motifs on beach stones, and acrylic paints to make the stones a little bit more colorful. It's a lot more fun having these interesting weights available for the next sewing session. Linda Williams shared how she does something special for friends at Christmas time, she calls it the 12 days of Christmas Time. A small item is given to a friend each of the 12 days before the holiday. These items are not costly and could be purchased at the Dollar Store. It brings a small amount of Christmas joy. I showed another friendship idea - the Sunshine basket. It can be used for a friend who needs a little brightening in their life at the moment. All items need to be yellow. Take a walk through the Dollar Store and watch for the color yellow. It can be anything from a bright yellow washcloth to a candy bar. It's

all up to you, but anything will be sure to bring a smile to your friend. And, you don't need to stop at yellow. Instead of a yellow basket, try Pink (I'm tickled pink to be your friend), Orange (Orange you glad we're friends) or even Blue (I'm blue without you). This is fun for both you and your special friend. As we talked about friendship, we discussed friendship rocks which are very popular right now. You need only to look at Pinterest or Facebook to see the background of the story of these rocks, how to paint them and how to spread them around. Here again, they're meant to be placed anywhere, then to be found and make someone's day a little bit better. It's happening all over the world - let's make it happen here. I dropped a couple on my walk today and will be interested to see if they are still there when I return.

QUILTING SIG, Leenie Risser:

With the tragedy of the hurricane in Texas, we set aside our scheduled plans at our September meeting, expanded our hours, and members jumped in with fabric, blocks, and supplies to sew quilt tops to be sent to a quilt shop outside of San Antonio, Quilt Haus.

Pittock Mansion HOLIDAY DECORATING CRS will again be decorating the card nooks for Christmas at Pittock Mansion. A new hidden object will be created for the young at heart to look for that will fit in with this year's theme "A Very Portland Christmas." The dates for the celebration are November 20 through December 31. In keeping with the theme, we will be highlighting a Portland postcard. The hidden object will be a small hand-sewn/handcrafted postcard. The EastSide Day Group will be working on these during their regular October meeting.
