2016 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT PLAYERS OF THE WEEK OFFENSIVE

CO-DEFENSIVE

CO-SPECIAL TEAMS

Jonah Hodges, San Diego

Jonathan Petersen, San Diego

Drew Bevelhimer, Butler

Hodges supplied two victory-sealing touchdown runs as San Diego downed Marist, 27-3, in a matchup of the league’s top two teams. He had 33 carries for 175 yards on the day and tacked on seven receptions for 45 yards, ending with 220 all-purpose yards. With San Diego leading 13-3 entering the 4th quarter, he touched the ball 16 times on 25 plays in the frame. Hodges scored on a seven-yard run early in the fourth and tacked on one-yard run on the next-to-last San Diego drive. Fifteen of his touches resulted in a San Diego first down or touchdown in the contest. It also was his PFL-leading fifth 100-yard rushing outing this season and second 175-plus rushing performance.

Petersen had three sacks to pace San Diego’s defense in a 27-3 PFL victory at Marist, Saturday. The three sacks are the most by a PFL defender this season and were a part of his four-tackle outing. Behind his effort, San Diego held Marist to just 26 yards rushing and season lows in total yardage (201) and points (3).

Bevelhimer’s three field goals helped Butler maintain its lead en route to a 23-12 PFL victory at Valparaiso, Saturday. He made field goals on back-to-back Butler possessions in the first half, connecting from 31 and 40 yards out extend Butler’s lead to 13-6. He added a 27-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter to set the final margin. Bevelhimer chipped in two PATs to finish the day with 11 of Butler’s 23 points.

He became the first Butler defender with two interceptions in a game since 2010. Wallen’s first interception came on Campbell’s first drive. He returned the pick 58 yards to set up the Drake offense at the 17-yard line, ultimately leading to a touchdown and a 14-0 lead. Wallen’s second interception came on a deep pass attempt late in the first half. He also had three tackles (one solo) and handled punt return duties (two returns, 31 yards). Four of those boots were downed inside the 20-yard line (three inside the 10-yard line) and two went for 50-plus yards, including his 67-yard kick to start the second quarter (his only touchback of the day). 2016 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT KICKOFF CAPSULES: WEEK 9 Morehead State at Butler, 1 p.m.

Video: ButlerSports.com Setting the Scene: Butler wraps up the home portion of its 2016 schedule when it hosts a Morehead State squad returning to action after its off week. The Bulldogs return home with the Hoosier Helmet in hand after winning at Valparaiso last week as kicker Drew Bevelhimer kicked three field goals and poured in 11 points. The Eagles return from their break not only seeking an end to a threegame losing streak but also their first road win this season. Morehead State Matchup to Watch: All about the pass. The Eagles own the PFL’s top passing offense, averaging 331.8 yards per game with 13 touchdowns in five PFL contests. Quarterback Austin Gahafer enters the game needing just 437 yards to break the PFL’s career passing yardage record. He will matchup against a Butler defensive unit that is ranked 11th in the PFL, allowing 272.2 yards per game and 10 passing touchdowns this season. Butler Matchup to Watch: All about the run. Meanwhile, Butler has seen its run game return to form over the last three weeks, averaging 228.7 yards per game in that span. Running back Duvante Lane ran for 156 yards in last week’s win at Valparaiso and has 280 rushing yards in the last three games. Morehead State ranks 11th among league defenses against the run, permitting 263.6 yards per game and 11 touchdowns in five PFL outings.

Valparaiso at Dayton, 1 p.m.

Video: DaytonFlyers.com Setting the Scene: Dayton also closes shop on its 2016 home schedule when it hosts Valparaiso in a series that has tilted the Flyers direction. The Flyers notched their fifth-straight win and stayed unbeaten at Welcome Stadium with last week’s victory against Stetson. The Crusaders dropped their second consecutive contest with last week’s home loss to Butler and own just one road win this season, an Oct. 15 victory at Stetson. Valparaiso Matchup to Watch: Protect the quarterback. Valparaiso has permitted just eight sacks this season on 217 drop backs in PFL play. That has allowed quarterback Jimmy Seewald time to pass for 11 touchdowns and 144.9 yards per game in 2016, ranking second and first in those respective categories among freshmen. However, Dayton’s defense leads the league with 15 sacks in six PFL outings this season, including four in last week’s victory. Dayton Matchup to Watch: Keep scoring in the red zone. Dayton owns the PFL’s most efficient red zone offense, converting on 22-of-23 of its opportunities (95.7 percent) in PFL play (34-of-36, 94.4 percent in 2016), including 18 touchdowns scored in red zone chances. The Crusaders have had their difficulties stopping teams inside the red zone, opponents converting on 92 percent of their chances, including 17 touchdowns allowed.

Drake at Jacksonville, 1 p.m.

Video: DrakeBulldogs.com Setting the Scene: The PFL’s two three-win squads will square off in Florida when Drake heads south to meet Jacksonville. Drake takes to the road after downing Campbell at home last week and will look for a second straight road win (won at Valparaiso, Oct. 8). Jacksonville returns from a two-game road trip with a pair of wins in hand after scoring 96 combined points in wins at Morehead State and Davidson. Drake Matchup to Watch: It takes 400. Drake’s three PFL wins this season have required it to post more than 400 yards of offense, including 420 yards in last week’s victory against Campbell. For the first time this season, the Bulldogs had a 100-yard runner (Conley Wilkins) and receiver (Eric Saubert) in that win at Campbell. Jacksonville’s defense has been a solid middle of the pack squad, ranking fifth in total yardage allowed (368.8 ypg) but are ninth in rushing defense (164.6 ypg). Jacksonville Matchup to Watch: They Do Run Run. In their two road wins, Jacksonville unleashed its run game, posting 773 yards on 126 caries (6.13 yards per carry). The Dolphins have 18 rushing touchdowns this season against just nine passing touchdowns, very different from the JU teams of the past. Drake’s defense may rank ninth in PFL play, allowing 408.8 yards per game, but is seventh in rushing defense as it has limited teams to 164.6 yards per game.

Marist at Stetson, 2 p.m.

Video: ESPN3 Setting the Scene: After suffering its first PFL loss, Marist will jump right back into action when it heads to sunny Florida for a contest at Stetson. The Red Foxes return to the road where they are 2-1 this season with wins in their last two round outings. Stetson suffered its first road setback this season at Dayton, but returns to Spec Martin Stadium where it is just 1-3 this season. Marist Matchup to Watch: Rediscover the offensive magic. The Red Foxes were held to season lows in yardage and points by a red hot San Diego defense. Prior to last week, Marist had three straight games with 30-plus points and 400-plus yards (473.3 ypg), a form it looks to return to with its trip south. Stetson owns the league’s second-ranked defense, allowing just 304.6 yards per game in PFL play this season and is the league’s top-rated pass defense, limiting PFL teams to just 174 passing yards per game. Stetson Matchup to Watch: Find the Red Zone. Stetson has run its offense in the red zone just 14 times in five PFL games this season, fewest among PFL teams this season. In addition, the Hatters have converted just 10 times (six for touchdowns) and scored 53 points in those chances. Marist has allowed 17 red-zone opportunities in five PFL games this season with 15 conversions for 90 points.

Davidson at Campbell, 4 p.m.

Video: GoCamels.com Setting the Scene: The PFL version of the Tar Heel Battle will take place when Davidson heads cross-state to face Campbell. The Wildcats make the trip seeking their first PFL win this season while also looking to end a six-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Camels are amidst a three-game losing streak that lasted the entire month of October and are hoping a new month brings a change. Davidson Matchup to Watch: Freshmen Keep Growing. Davidson has relied on the freshman backfield duo of quarterback Stockton McGuire and running back Keylan Brown for the bulk of the PFL campaign. McGuire leads all PFL freshmen with 148.6 passing yards per game while Brown leads all freshman runners with 104 carries (382 yards) this season. Will they be able to find their groove against a Campbell defense that ranks third in PFL play, limiting teams to 350.2 yards per game? Campbell Matchup to Watch: Mind the turnovers. Campbell saw two early turnovers at Drake prove costly as they led to the game’s first 14 points and a deficit the Camels could not recover from. While Campbell negated the turnovers by forcing two of their own, they remain tied for ninth in the league with a minus-1.00 turnover margin per game in PFL play. Davidson is ranked fourth in turnover margin, but with a razor-thin +0.17 per game turnover margin. However, the Wildcats have recovered five fumbles in six PFL games while the Camels have lost four fumbles in four PFL outings.

Universidad De Las Americas Puebla at San Diego, 7 p.m. [Exhibition]

Video: TheW.tv Setting the Scene: San Diego steps out of conference play with an exhibition contest against Mexico-based Universidad De Las Americas Puebla, located near Puebla, Mexico. The game is not a countable contest based on NCAA policies.

2016 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT NEWS AND NOTES FROM AROUND THE PFL RAYMOND SETS EYES ON PFL RECEPTIONS MARK | Morehead State slot receiver Jake Raymond has focused his attention on the PFL’s career receptions mark. He enters this week’s action with 251 career receipts, second among FCS active career leaders. Raymond seeks to break the record of 254 career receptions set by Butler’s Zach Watkins (2008-11). NO FLY ZONE | Dayton enters Week 10 ranked among the FCS’s top five in interceptions, with 14 picks in nine games this season. However, the Flyers saw their streak of nine consecutive games with an interception stopped in Week 9 as they did not nab a Stetson pass. The Flyers have three players – David Leisring, Christian Searles and Cameron Stubbs – ranked among the FCS Top 25 in interceptions per game. LIVING IN THE BACKFIELD | Stetson’s defense leads all FCS units with 10.5 team tackles for loss per game this season. The Hatters have posted 10 or tackles for loss in six of their eight games this season, including 16 tackles for loss against Jacksonville, Sept. 24. Stetson’s Jeb Boudreaux is ranked third among FCS defenders with a PFL-leading 2.1 tackles for loss per game this season.

NO GRAY AREA | Jacksonville’s Henderson Gray was the FCS’ top threat on punt returns, entering Week 9 ranked No. 1 with 21.8 yards per return. However, he did not have a punt return at Davidson and dropped out of the FCS rankings, he will need two returns in Week 10 to return to the rankings list. GAHAFER BEGINS MOVE ON PFL PASSING MARK | Morehead State quarterback Austin Gahafer has begun his push toward the PFL’s career passing yardage mark. He now has 10,794 career passing yards and needs just 437 yards to break the record of 11,230 held by Jacksonville’s Josh McGregor (2008-11). Earlier this season, he blasted past 10,000 career passing yards with a 418-yard performance against Dayton in Week 6, becoming the sixth PFL quarterback to reach the 10,000-yard milestone. WILL KICKS WAY TO PFL RECORD | Dayton kicker William Will set the PFL record for career field goals with three conversions at Jacksonville in Week 7, breaking the record held by Drake’s Billy Cundiff (49, 1998-01). Now with 53 field goals after Week 9, he has set his eyes on moving into the FCS’ Top 25 for field goals made, which stands at 56 field goals made and is held by five different kickers. DAYTON’S SCORING STREAK PASSES 450 GAMES | The nation’s longest streak of

games without being shutout belongs to PFL-member Dayton, which extended the streak to an impressive 452 games with its Week 9 victory against Stetson. On the FBS side, Florida holds the nation’s longest streak of games without being shutout at 354, dating back to the 1988 season. The Flyers streak dates back to 1976 when it suffered a 9-0 loss to Marshall.

SAN DIEGO OWNS FCS’ STINGIEST DEFENSE | Entering Week 8, San Diego’s defense leads the FCS in fewest points allowed in 2016, permitting just 11.6 points per game. In four of their eight games, the Toreros have permitted just one score by the opposing team. A large part of that effort is due to owning one of the FCS’ best defensive units against the pass, based on its 85.88 pass efficiency defense rating (best in the FCS). TOREROS PROTECT THEIR OWN | Keeping true to their mascot, San Diego has not allowed opposing teams to get to their quarterback, permitting just one sack in eight games this season, ranking second in fewest sacks allowed among FCS teams. Only Southern Conference member The Citadel has done better, not allowing a single sack in six games. NO BUTTERFINGERS IN THIS GROUP | Drake surrendered its first fumble lost in Week 6

action, ending a stretch of five games without a fumble lost. The Bulldogs (605 plays in 2016) coughed up their first fumble to another team that has been stingy with giveaways this season… Valparaiso, which has lost just one fumble this season (599 plays).

DAYTON’S CHAMBERLIN NOTCHES 50TH PFL WIN | Dayton head coach Rick Chamberlin became only the second PFL coach to record 50 league wins, reaching the milestone in Week 6 against Morehead State. He joins former Dayton head coach and College Football Hall of Fame member Mike Kelley, who amassed a 55-16 career PFL record in 15 seasons, as the only PFL coaches to record 50 league wins.

2016 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT HATTERS MAKE SPORTSCENTER TOP 10 | Stetson’s overtime blocked field goal return for a touchdown landed the No. 3 spot on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays, Oct. 22. Senior Donald Payne blocked the field goal try, his FCS leading third blocked kick this season. JONES SECOND PFL 200-YARD RUSHER IN ‘16 | Morehead State freshman running

back Trevor Jones became the PFL’s second 200-yard rusher this season. His 284-yard outing against Jacksonville in Week 8 was the best rushing performance in the PFL since 2014 (Dayton’s Connor Kacsor, 301 yards) and was only 29 yards shy of the PFL record set in 1996.

EAGLE’S BENNETT TACKLES 20 | Morehead State Ryan Bennett was credited with 20 tackles in the Week 8 contest against Jacksonville, becoming the first PFL defender with 20 tackles since 2015 (Drake’s John Hugunin, 20 tackles). CHRISTIAN ENDS LONG 200-YARD RECEIVER DROUGHT | Marist wideout Juston Chris-

tian’s 212-yard outing against Morehead State ended a long drought between 200-yard receivers in the PFL. The drought had reached 763 days dating back to Davidson’s William Morris, who amassed 208 receiving yards on Sept. 13, 2014. It is the second longest drought between 200-yard receiving efforts in the league, reaching just over halfway the 1,477-day drought from 2008-12.

c – co-champions # - Jacksonville vacated its 2010 co-championship as part of penalties for PFL rules violations. Notes on PFL Championship: From 1993-2000 – and returning to the format in 2005 – the PFL was composed of one division and the championship was awarded to the team with the best conference record. From 2001-2005, the league expanded and split into two divisions with the divisional winners, who were the teams with the best record against divisional opponents, facing off in a championship game, the winner of that game was awarded the league’s championship.

NOTES: The PFL records on this page reflect PFL penalties imposed against Jacksonville (# - vacated 30 wins during the 2010-14 seasons) and San Diego (% - vacated 7 wins during the 2013 season). In accordance with NCAA policy, the wins and ties, but not the losses, of the penalized team are dropped from its PFL record only. The won-lost records for each of the opposing teams are not changed when games are vacated. In addition, the overall records for both teams were not changed.

of 22 players named to the STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year Watch List. Payne, the two-time defending PFL Defensive Player of the Year, returns as the eighth leading tackler in all NCAA football with 412 career tackles. His 243 career solo tackles ranks third among all active players entering the 2016 season.

PFL’S 24TH CAMPAIGN | The 2016 season marks the 24th year

for the Pioneer Football League – the nation’s only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference. The league will feature 11 teams each playing an eight-game schedule to determine the league champion and recipient of the automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA FCS Championship.

MOREHEAD STATE’S GAHAFER TAPPED FOR STATS FCS OFFENSIVE AWARD WATCH LIST | Morehead State senior quarter-

back Austin Gahafer has been listed on the STATS FCS National Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Watch List. The Louisville, Ky., native is coming off a prolific 2015 season when he was named Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Year. Gahafer needs only 1,738 passing yards to set the Morehead State career record and just 2,717 yards to break the PFL career mark.

DAYTON’S WILL NAMED TO FRED MITCHELL AWARD WATCH LIST | Dayton senior placekicker William Will has been named to the

Watch List for the Fred Mitchell Award, which goes to the top kicking specialist at the FCS, NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA levels. He also led the league in field goals per game (1.42), field goal percentage (73.9% (17 of 23) and was one of three kickers in the PFL who was perfect on PAT’s (33 of 33). .

tive season both of the league’s Players of the Year return. Stetson safety Donald Payne, a two-time PFL Defensive Player of the Year, returns after finishing second among all PFL defenders in tackles per game (11.5) and tackles for loss per game (1.36). Morehead State quarterback Austin Gahafer, the reigning PFL Offensive Player of the Year, led the league with 291 completed passes for 3,244 yards and 24 touchdowns last season.

SAN DIEGO PICKED TO WIN PFL | Defending champion San Diego again received the coaches’ nod to win the 2015 PFL title, but the coaches also predicted an exciting race. The top three teams in the preseason poll were separated by just three points. San Diego received seven of a possible 10 first-place votes and 89 of a maximum 100 points as coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team in the poll. Dayton received three first-place votes and was ranked second with 87 points. Drake gained the remaining first-place vote and was third with 86 points.
