KICKOFF CAPSULE San Diego at Cal Poly, 7 p.m.

Setting the Scene: San Diego makes its second ever appearance in the Division I Football Championship when it travels to in-state foe Cal Poly for first round action. The newly minted nationally-ranked Toreros travel northward seeking their first victory in the postseason tournament, which also would be the PFL’s first win since receiving an automatic bid in 2013. San Diego and Cal Poly met in Week 2 of the 2016 campaign, the Mustangs winning by a 38-16 scoreline. Saturday’s rematch will pit the FCS’ No. 5 and 6 runners against each other. Cal Poly’s Joe Protheroe finished the season averaging 121.2 rushing yards per game with 11 touchdowns. San Diego’s Jonah Hodges posted 119.0 rushing yards per game and scored 15 touchdowns. San Diego Story to Watch: Make a Statement Against the Run. San Diego’s pass defense garners a great deal of attention, but its run defense has been just as stout in 2016 with one exception – the Cal Poly contest. The Toreros held nine of their 10 opponents to less than 85 yards on the ground in 2016, winning each of those contests. However, San Diego surrendered 354 of the 822 rushing yards it allowed in 2016 to the Mustangs in Week 2 – Protheroe running for 131 yards while quarterback Dano Graves chipped in 98 rushing yards. Cal Poly Story to Watch: Make the Toreros experience déjà vu. The Mustangs only need look back to Week 2 to see how to contain the Toreros, as they are the only team to hold San Diego to less than 390 offensive yards this season. However, they will run into a Toreros squad that is a little different creature than it faced in that first meeting, particularly running back Jonah Hodges. Hodges was held to 93 rushing yards in the season’s first meeting, but didn’t really find his legs until Week 4 and has since broken off 100-plus yards in six of his last seven outings.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Grant Kraemer, Drake

Jonathan Petersen, San Diego

Javier Arce-Ramirez, Jacksonville

Kraemer threw five touchdowns to help Drake end its 2016 season with a 45-17 PFL victory at Stetson, Saturday. He threw for a careerhigh 334 yards, completing 21-of-33 passes, and became the first Drake quarterback to throw for five touchdowns in a game since 2013. Karemer threw for three touchdowns in a stretch of four consecutive second-half drives that each ended in a touchdown that broke the game open. His first touchdown pass was a 73-yard strike to tight end Eric Saubert that put Drake ahead in the second quarter.

Petersen’s five tackles all came in the backfield as he helped lead a San Diego to a 5721 PFL victory at Campbell, Saturday. He finished with five tackles for loss (25 yards lost), including three quarterback sacks (20 yards lost), and was credited with a hurry that led to a San Diego pick six. Three of his tackles for loss occurred in the decisive third quarter, one ending a Campbell drive and another occurring the play before his hurry. The five tackles for loss were the most in the FCS during Week 12 (ninth most in 2016) and it was his second three sack game of the season (fifthmost in FCS).

Arce-Ramirez was responsible for 11 points in Jacksonville’s 41-35 PFL victory against Marist, Saturday. In a game decided by six points, his two field goals provided the cushion. Arce-Ramirez opened the day’s scoring with a 21-yard field goal and opened the third quarter with a 40-yard field goal, the latter giving Jacksonville a 27-14 lead it would not surrender. He also converted all five of his PATs and handled kickoff duties.

c – co-champions # - Jacksonville vacated its 2010 co-championship as part of penalties for PFL rules violations. Notes on PFL Championship: From 1993-2000 – and returning to the format in 2005 – the PFL was composed of one division and the championship was awarded to the team with the best conference record. From 2001-2005, the league expanded and split into two divisions with the divisional winners, who were the teams with the best record against divisional opponents, facing off in a championship game, the winner of that game was awarded the league’s championship.

NOTES: The PFL records on this page reflect PFL penalties imposed against Jacksonville (# - vacated 30 wins during the 2010-14 seasons) and San Diego (% - vacated 7 wins during the 2013 season). In accordance with NCAA policy, the wins and ties, but not the losses, of the penalized team are dropped from its PFL record only. The won-lost records for each of the opposing teams are not changed when games are vacated. In addition, the overall records for both teams were not changed.

of 22 players named to the STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year Watch List. Payne, the two-time defending PFL Defensive Player of the Year, returns as the eighth leading tackler in all NCAA football with 412 career tackles. His 243 career solo tackles ranks third among all active players entering the 2016 season.

PFL’s 24th CAMPAIGN | The 2016 season marks the 24th year

for the Pioneer Football League – the nation’s only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference. The league will feature 11 teams each playing an eight-game schedule to determine the league champion and recipient of the automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA FCS Championship.

MOREHEAD STATE’S GAHAFER TAPPED FOR STATS FCS OFFENSIVE AWARD WATCH LIST | Morehead State senior quarter-

back Austin Gahafer has been listed on the STATS FCS National Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Watch List. The Louisville, Ky., native is coming off a prolific 2015 season when he was named Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Year. Gahafer needs only 1,738 passing yards to set the Morehead State career record and just 2,717 yards to break the PFL career mark.

DAYTON’S WILL NAMED TO FRED MITCHELL AWARD WATCH LIST | Dayton senior placekicker William Will has been named to the

Watch List for the Fred Mitchell Award, which goes to the top kicking specialist at the FCS, NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA levels. It is the third straight season Will has been named to the Mitchell Watch List. A two-time First Team All-PFL pick, Will’s 84 points were the most in the PFL last season. He also led the league in field goals per game (1.42), field goal percentage (73.9% (17 of 23) and was one of three kickers in the PFL who was perfect on PAT’s (33 of 33). .

THREE NAMED TO STATS FCS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA SQUADS | Three Pioneer Football League student athletes were

among the 100 named to the STATS FCS Preseason All-America Team. Drake senior tight end Eric Saubert, Stetson senior defensive back Donald Payne and Dayton junior return specialist Christian Searles were the Pioneer Football League student-athletes named to the STATS FCS Preseason All-America Teams.

FIVE PFL ATHLETES NOMINATED FOR 2015 ALLSTATE AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM | Five Pioneer Football League student-ath-

letes were among 165 nominees from across the country for the 25th edition of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. Sean Horan (Butler), Nate Casey (Davidson), Taylor Coleman (Drake), Cameron Gibson (Marist) and Devyn Bryant (San Diego) were nominated for the 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.

2015 PLAYERS OF THE YEAR RETURN | For the second consecu-

tive season both of the league’s Players of the Year return. Stetson safety Donald Payne, a two-time PFL Defensive Player of the Year, returns after finishing second among all PFL defenders in tackles per game (11.5) and tackles for loss per game (1.36). Morehead State quarterback Austin Gahafer, the reigning PFL Offensive Player of the Year, led the league with 291 completed passes for 3,244 yards and 24 touchdowns last season.

SAN DIEGO PICKED TO WIN PFL | Defending champion San Diego again received the coaches’ nod to win the 2015 PFL title, but the coaches also predicted an exciting race. The top three teams in the preseason poll were separated by just three points. San Diego received seven of a possible 10 first-place votes and 89 of a maximum 100 points as coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team in the poll. Dayton received three first-place votes and was ranked second with 87 points. Drake gained the remaining first-place vote and was third with 86 points.
