2016 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT PLAYERS OF THE WEEK OFFENSIVE

CO-DEFENSIVE

SPECIAL TEAMS

Kegan Moore, Stetson

Colt Briggs, Morehead State

Mike Maccarone, Marist

Moore caught three fourth-quarter touchdown passes as Stetson rallied for a 31-27 PFL victory at Davidson, Saturday. Trailing 2110 after the third quarter, the Hatters turned to Moore in the passing game. He caught a 42-yard pass from Gaven DeFilippo three minutes into the fourth quarter to start the rally. Two Stetson possessions later, he caught a 38-yard pass for a touchdown and a 24-21 lead. After Davidson regained the lead, Moore capped the game-winning drive with an eightyard reception. In the fourth quarter alone, he caught six passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns. Moore finished the game with a career-high nine receptions for 150 yards.

Briggs notched four tackles for loss to help Morehead State claim a 29-26 PFL victory against Valparaiso, Saturday. He finished the game with 10 tackles (six solo), his teamleading four tackles for loss and was credited with two quarterback hurries. Briggs was a key part of a goal-line stand by the Eagles early in the third quarter, stopping a pair of runs behind the line of scrimmage (one tackle for loss negated by a penalty) to help force a Valparaiso field goal to keep the game within a touchdown.

Maccarone’s punting helped keep Campbell’s offense bottled up as Marist opened PFL play with a 24-7 victory, Saturday. His five punts averaged 42.8 yards and Campbell did not attempt a return on any of the boots. Maccarone opened his punting effort with a 63-yard bomb that ended at the Campbell five-yard line. It was one of three punts that ended inside the 10-yard line and the Camels’ average starting position after his punts was its own 13-yard line. Maccarone also converted all four of his kicks, hitting a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter and converting all three of his PATs.

He finished the game with seven tackles (all solo), a tackle for loss, an interception and two pass breakups. Late in the first quarter, he posted his tackle for loss and interception on the same drive, halting Campbell at the Marist 33-yard line and maintaining the scoreless tie. 2016 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT KICKOFF CAPSULES SATURDAY, OCT. 8 Stetson at Brown, 12:30 p.m.

Video: IvyLeagueDigitalNetwork.com Setting the Scene: Fresh off its first PFLwin of 2016, Stetson steps out of conference play in Week 6 to face Ivy League member Brown. The Hatters secured their first PFL win thanks to the Gaven DeFilippo-Kegan Moore pairing that connected for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter at Davidson. Meanwhile, Brown returns home after a competitive 28-13 loss at Rhode Island last week. Stetson Matchup to Watch: Stetson put together its best offensive outing of the season at Davidson, posting season bets in scoring (31 points) and total yardage (442). DeFilippo led that offensive effort with 26 pass completions for a seasonbest 326 yards, finding Moore on nine completions totalling 150 yards. That duo will run up against a stingy Brown squad that ranks 12th among FCS programs in total defense, holding opponents to 301.3 yards per game. Brown Matchup to Watch: Brown quarterback Kyle Moreno is ranked among the FCS’ top 20 passes in completions per game (22.3) and points responsible for per game (18.7). He threw for three touchdowns in each of his first two games before being held to one touchdown in last week’s contest. Stetson will face him with the PFL’s fifth ranked pass defense, which has limited opponents to 176.2 passing yards per game and only eight touchdowns in four games.

Marist at Butler, 1 p.m.

Video: ButlerSports.com Setting the Scene: A week after its first win of 2016, Marist will look for a second straight win when it travels to Butler. The Red Foxes held a high-octane Campbell offense to one touchdown (the Camels had 20 touchdowns entering the game) in a Week 5 win, largely thanks to winning the field-position battle as Campbell’s averaging starting position was inside its own 20-yard line. Butler opened its PFL schedule with an overtime loss to that Campbell side in Week 4 but could not build off its late charge in that game in a Week 5 loss to league-leading San Diego. Marist Matchup to Watch: Marist proved it could win via a field-position battle against Campbell as punter Mike Maccarone averaged 42.8 yards per punt in the game and placed three kicks inside the Campbell 10-yard line. This week’s matchup pits that Marist punting unit which is ranked second in the league (36.2 net yards per punt) against a Butler unit that is the league’s best (39.7 net yards per punt). Marist has allowed just 1.7 yards in punt returns (45 yards on 26 punts) this season while Butler has held returners to minus-3 yards total on 25 punts. Butler Matchup to Watch: The Bulldogs turned to Will Marty at quarterback against San Diego and he responded to his first start by completing 15-of-39 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown. He connected with wide receiver Pace Temple seven times for 94 yards, keeping Temple atop the PFL’s receiving leaders list at 99.2 yards per game. Marist owns the PFL’s top rated pass defense, forcing opponents into more interceptions (five) than touchdowns (three) and limiting those opposing passing games to a 85.8 pass efficiency rating.

Morehead State at Dayton, 1 p.m.

Video: DaytonFlyers.com Setting the Scene: A battle of 1-1 squads will take shape when Morehead State makes the trip to Dayton. Both teams posted home wins in Week 5 action to get to 1-1 in league play after PFL-opening road losses. The Eagles eked out a victory against upstart Valparaiso last week as Austin Gahafer threw his second touchdown of the game to Jake Raymond with 22 seconds left. The Flyers had an easier time in a 35-10 victory against Drake as quarterback Alex Jeske found his legs and ran for a pair of touchdowns. Morehead State Matchup to Watch: Eagles quarterback Austin Gahafer has steadily improved week to week and has opened PFL play with back-to-back 300yard passing performances. He leads the PFL in completions (115), attempts (203) and touchdown passes (nine) this season, but is only fifth in efficiency (119.9). However, he has been stymied by Dayton in his three previous seasons, throwing just three touchdowns against five interceptions despite averaging 220 pasing yards per game and a 61.3 pass completion percentage. Dayton Matchup to Watch: Dayton got a key piece of its offense back when Tucker Yinger returned after missing the two previous games. He made his presence felt in his return, his 172 yards on 21 carries ranking as the second-best rushing performance in the PFL this season. The Eagles defense is ranked 10th in the league in rushing defense, allowing 200 yards per game. However, the bulk of that came in Week 1 at James Madison. Since then, MSU has held opponents to 125.8 rushing yards per game, which would rank fourth among PFL opponents.

Drake at Valparaiso, 2 p.m.

Video: ESPN3 Setting the Scene: Another pair of league 1-1 squads will meet when Drake travels north to face Valparaiso. Drake saw its road losing streak extended after a slow start limited it to three points on its six first-half drives en route to a loss at Dayton. Valparaiso saw a potential 2-0 start snatched away with 22 seconds remaining at Morehead State Valparaiso Matchup to Watch: Running back Jarrett Morgan has posted a 100-yard rushing performance in each of his last three games. And while that may not seem like an accomplishment of note, it is a vast improvement for a Crusader rushing offense that did not produce a 100-yard rusher in all of 2015. He will meet a Drake rush defense seeking to bounce back from its season’s worst outing at Dayton, allowing a pair of 100-yard rushers and a season-worst 323 rushing yards last week. It was the first 300-yard rushing outing permitted by the Bulldogs since Sept. 14, 2012 against Indiana State. Drake Matchup to Watch: Eric Saubert continues to be the hardest working tight end at the FCS level, as he leads the subdivision’s tight ends in receptions per game (6.6) and is third in receiving yards per game (85.6). However, after catching a touchdown pass in each of his first three games in 2016, he has been held out of the end zone in his first two PFL contests. Meanwhile, Valparaiso has allowed a 100-yard receiver for the first time this season at Morehead State and has allowed just 208.6 passing yards per game – fifth in the PFL.

Davidson at San Diego, 4 p.m.

Video: TheW.tv Setting the Scene: Davidson makes the cross-country trek in Week 6 to face league-leading San Diego. While the Wildcats are 0-2 to start PFL play, those two losses have been by just four points each and both required a fourth-quarter score to deny a Davidson win. San Diego improved to 2-0 in PFL action with a dominant win at Butler that saw it roll up 526 offensive yards while holding Butler to 263 yards. Davidson Matchup to Watch: The Wildcats own the PFL’s stingiest rush defense after five weeks, holding opponents to 111.2 yards per game and only 2.8 yards per carry – both league bests. That’s largely thanks to a league-leading 2.8 sacks per game and 8.6 tackles for loss per outing (2nd in the PFL). However, it will run into a San Diego offensive unit that has permitted just one sack in its first four games (the 0.25 sacks permitted per game the 2nd lowest in the FCS) and only 5.5 tackles for loss per game (44th fewest in the FCS). San Diego Matchup to Watch: San Diego’s two-headed monster of quarterback Anthony Lawrence and Jonah Hodges enjoyed their trip to Butler, as Hodges ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns while Lawrence passed for 326 yards and was responsible for two touchdowns. The Toreros 526-yard offensive outing was its best this season – the second straight week it has posted its best offensive outing. Davidson permitted a season-high 442 yards of offense at Stetson last week, and its first 300-yard passing performance.

Campbell at Jacksonville, 7 p.m.

Video: ESPN3 Setting the Scene: A surprising 1-1 Campbell squad heads south to face a Jacksonville team that looks to improve on its 1-0 start to league play. The Camels posted 311 rushing yards at Marist, last week, but it could not overcome poor field position throughout the game and suffered its first PFL loss. The Dolphins return to league play after suffering a nonconference home loss to Duquesne last week, as it could not keep up with the Dukes passing game which accounted for six touchdowns. Campbell Matchup to Watch: The Camels and Dolphins own the PFL’s two most run-oriented offenses, though the comparison isn’t close. Campbell has relied on its run game for a league-leading 1,397 yards – more than 500 yards over the second most run-heavy squad – accounting for over 62 percent of its offensive yardage. The Dolphins have upped their run game in 2016, with 685 rushing yards which has amounted to more than 50 percent of its offensive output. Jacksonville Matchup to Watch: With two turnovers gained against Duquesne, Jacksonville continues to be the league’s most dangerous defense with 10 takeaways in its first four games. The Dolphins defense has recovered seven fumbles this season to help that cause but may find fumbles few and far between against Campbell. The Camels have lost just one fumble this season in 371 offensive plays.

2016 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEKLY REPORT NEWS AND NOTES FROM AROUND THE PFL SAUBERT PACING FCS TIGHT ENDS | Drake’s Eric Saubert is making a name for himself as one of the FCS’ top tight end receivers in 2016. He leads all FCS tight ends in receptions per game (6.6) and ranks third in receiving yards per game (85.6) with 33 receptions for 428 yards and three touchdowns. HODGES AMONG ALL-PURPOSE LEADERS | San Diego’s Jonah Hodges is the nation’s

No. 2 all-purpose runner after four weeks, averaging 185.00 all-purpose yards per game. While he is averaging 98.3 rushing yards per game, he has tacked on 58.0 receiving yards and 28.8 kickoff return yards per game. Hodges is averaging 8.2 yards per touch on his 90 plays in 2016.

GAHAFER CREEPING UP ON 10K | Morehead State quarterback Austin Gahafer enters Week 6 needing just 215 passing yards to reach the 10,000-career passing yard mark. He is the FCS active career leader in passing yardage and is fifth among all NCAA active career leaders at all levels. Only five PFL quarterbacks have reached 10,000 career passing yards in league history. RAYMOND SETS EYES ON PFL RECEPTIONS MARK | Morehead State slot receiver Jake Raymond has focused his attention on the PFL’s career receptions mark. He enters this week’s action with 235 career receipts, second among FCS active career leaders. Raymond seeks to break the record of 254 career receptions set by Butler’s Zach Watkins (2008-11). WILL ENOUGH TO REACH 50? | Dayton kicker William Will enters the week with 46 career field goals, ranking fifth on the FCS career active leader’s list. He needs four field goals to reach 50 career field goals made, breaking the PFL record held by Drake’s Billy Cundiff (49 made, 1998-01). NO BUTTERFINGERS IN DES MOINES | After five weeks, Drake is one of only seven teams

in the FCS not charged with a fumble lost in 2016. However, the Bulldogs have run more plays (387) without committing a fumble that any other FCS team this season. Nearly joining the Bulldogs are Campbell and Valparaiso, which have committed just one fumble each this season. The Camels have one fumble in 371 offensive plays this season while Valparaiso has run 347 plays with one fumble lost.

LIVING IN THE BACKFIELD | Stetson’s defense leads all FCS units with 10.8 team tackles for loss per game this season. That number spiked with its 16 tackles for loss recorded against Jacksonville in Week 4, a total that is second most in the nation this season. Only Davidson’s 18 TFL performance against NAIA member Livingstone ranks higher.

WILDCATS HUNTING QUARTERBACKS | Davidson’s defensive unit has also found a home

in opponent’s back fields this season, leading the league with 2.8 sacks per game – 19th most among FCS teams. Davidson is one of four PFL teams (Dayton, Marist and Jacksonville the others) averaging more than two sacks per game this season.

DAYTON KEEPS NATION’S LONGEST SCORING STREAK ALIVE | The nation’s longest streak of games without being shutout belongs to PFL member Dayton, which extended the streak to an impressive 448 games with its Week 5 victory against Drake. On the FBS side, Florida holds the nation’s longest streak of games without being shutout at 352,dating back to the 1988 season. The Flyers streak dates back to 1976 when it suffered a 9-0 loss to Marshall. MOREHEAD STATE’S HUTCHINSON NAMED FCS CHAIRMAN | Morehead State Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson will serve as chair of the Division I Football Championship Committee in 2016-17. Hutchinson, who has served as Morehead State’s director of athletics since 2004, is in his fourth year on this national committee, and becomes the first Pioneer Football League athletic director to serve as chair. c – co-champions # - Jacksonville vacated its 2010 co-championship as part of penalties for PFL rules violations. Notes on PFL Championship: From 1993-2000 – and returning to the format in 2005 – the PFL was composed of one division and the championship was awarded to the team with the best conference record. From 2001-2005, the league expanded and split into two divisions with the divisional winners, who were the teams with the best record against divisional opponents, facing off in a championship game, the winner of that game was awarded the league’s championship.

NOTES: The PFL records on this page reflect PFL penalties imposed against Jacksonville (# - vacated 30 wins during the 2010-14 seasons) and San Diego (% - vacated 7 wins during the 2013 season). In accordance with NCAA policy, the wins and ties, but not the losses, of the penalized team are dropped from its PFL record only. The won-lost records for each of the opposing teams are not changed when games are vacated. In addition, the overall records for both teams were not changed.
