Research Interests ­

Ship Design: Small Craft Technology, design of ships and offshore structures with specific focus on the integration of the various subsystems into the ship system and the interactions between the subsystem design and the overall ship design. Particular interest at the design of: o Advanced hull forms such as planing & semiplaning crafts, high speed displacement crafts, Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) ships, Surface Effect Ships (SES), Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs) and surface naval combatants o Submarines and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV) o Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV & UUV) o Wet Submersibles o Ship Conversions

Survivability: Investigation of the survivability of Ro-Ro passenger and naval ships through their susceptibility and vulnerability characteristics. Analysis of the Radar Cross Section (RCS) and Infrared (IR) signatures for naval combatants and their suppression through proper design. Vulnerability assessment of Ro-Ro and naval ships using alternative probabilistic damage stability procedures. Study the impact of the new rules and regulations on existing and new designs.

Parametric definition of ship design for investigating and implementing state-of-the-art optimisation algorithms. Application of Evolutionary and Genetic Algorithms for obtaining the Pareto-optimum solutions in MultiCriteria decision problems. Application to Multimodal Logistic framework. ­

Evacuation Modelling & Simulation: Modelling and simulation of the human behaviour and the crowd dynamics during the evacuation of large passenger ships. Investigation of the potential applicability of Cellular Automata-based (CA) programs to the compliance procedure of the relevant IMO regulations.

Seakeeping: Operability analysis using seakeeping computer codes such as NEWDRIFT (a 3D panel method software developed by Prof. A. Papanikolaou) for estimating the performance of monohull and twin-hull ships in sea waves, according to prescribed criteria.

­

Computer Aid Design & Animation: Application of modern computer aid design (i.e. NAPA, AUTOCAD, Rhinocheros, AUTOSHIP) & animation (i.e. 3DS max, Maya) programs in ship design and simulation. Development of user-friendly computer programs using low-level application programming interfaces (APIs) such as Microsoft® Direct3D® and OpenGL.
