Familiar foes will face off again in Friday’s quarter-finals at the Mutua Madrid Open, highlighted by the record-setting Rafael Nadal against World No. 7 Dominic Thiem. Nadal has winning streaks of 14 matches and 30 sets overall, as well as 21 matches and 50 sets on clay. The Spaniard passed John McEnroe on Thursday for the longest single-surface set streak in the Open Era. He also tied a personal-best for consecutive sets won overall. Nadal swept 30 straight sets in 2012 as well.

Thiem is the last man to win a set and a match against Nadal on clay, doing so 19 May 2017 in the Rome quarter-finals. Nadal is 2-0 against Thiem since then, dropping only nine games in five sets. All eight of Nadal and Thiem’s prior meetings came on clay with the World No. 1 leading the FedEx ATP Head2Head 6-2. Nadal defeated Thiem 7-6(8), 6-4 in the 2017 Mutua Madrid Open final. World No. 3 Alexander Zverev and World No. 9 John Isner will meet in a rematch of the Miami final, won by Isner on 1 April. Neither player has had their serve broken in Madrid. Zverev has broken his opponents six times, while Isner has yet to earn a break point with his return, posting a 4-1 record in tiebreakers to reach the quarter-finals. Isner is 2-3 in tiebreakers against Zverev.

Three unseeded players advanced to the Madrid quarter-finals, including No. 1 Brit Kyle Edmund and #NextGenATP star Denis Shapovalov. They meet Friday for the fifth time, representing 9% of the 19-year-old Shapovalov’s 54 tour-level matches. Their meetings will have spanned all three surfaces and all five tour levels. Each man owns two wins in their FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry. Shapovalov broke one of Nadal’s records and is the youngest quarter-finalist in tournament history.

World No. 8 Kevin Anderson plays his 11th ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final against a man playing his first, Dusan Lajovic. Anderson is 0-10 in ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finals, but the 95th-ranked Lajovic will be his lowest-ranked opponent at this stage and level. Lajovic is the first qualifier to reach the Madrid quarter-finals since Santiago Giraldo in 2014. He is bidding to become the second qualifier to reach the semi-finals in tournament history, joining Fabrice Santoro in 2002.
