NO. 1 FEDERER AND RISING CORIC TO FACE OFF FOR HALLE CROWN •

Defending champion Roger Federer will try to claim a staggering 10th Gerry Weber Open title when he takes on Borna Coric in the championship match on Sunday. Federer leads the head-tohead record with the 21-year-old Croatian by 2-0, but Coric pushed the Swiss star to the limit in a three-set semi-final battle at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells earlier this year.

Top-ranked Federer is 20-0 on grass since 2017 Halle; this is the second-longest grass streak of his career, surpassed only by winning 65 straight matches on grass from 2003 to 2008. Now into his 12th Halle final, Federer must win this match to retain his World No. 1 position on Monday – a loss will cause him to drop to No. 2 behind Rafael Nadal. The top seed had to save two match points in the second round against Benoit Paire before prevailing in a deciding-set tiebreak, but won his next two matches with 7-6 7-5 scorelines. Federer also leads the tournament with 32 aces.

Coric becomes the first Croatian to reach the final in the 26-year history of the Gerry Weber Open. Coric opened the tournament by winning his third match in four meetings with World No. 3 Alexander Zverev, and continued through the draw without dropping a set, winning 29 of his 30 service games (leading the field) and claiming 10 of 31 return games (also leading the field). Having reached his first final since winning his maiden ATP World Tour title in Marrakech over a year ago, Coric is projected to surpass his career-high ranking of No. 28 regardless of the final result.

The doubles final will be a rematch of last year’s championship battle, as top seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo will take on German brothers Alexander and Mischa Zverev for the second year running. Kubot and Melo finished last year as the No. 1 doubles team in the world, and opened the season by winning the Sydney title, but this is their first final since then. Both of their previous meetings with the Zverevs went to match tiebreaks, but Kubot and Melo triumphed each time.

KUDLA FACES FEDERER FOLLOWING DREAM RUN TO HALLE SEMIS •

Denis Kudla stands 5-foot-11, but clutch serving has helped the 109th-ranked qualifier reach the second semi-final of his career at the Gerry Weber Open. Kudla is 10-0 in sets this week and has saved 20 of 21 break points overall, including two wins in qualifying. He is trying to become just the second American to reach the Halle final. Mardy Fish was runner-up to Roger Federer in 2004.

Fourteen years later, Federer stands in Kudla’s way on Saturday. The nine-time champion is 19-0 on grass since 2017 Halle, the second-longest grass streak of his storied career. Federer won 65 straight matches on grass from 2003-08. He has reached the semi-finals in each of his last 14 Halle appearances and is bidding for his 12th final, one shy of the 13 finals that he has reached in Basel.

No. 4 seed Roberto Bautista Agut brings a 4-2 head-to-head lead into his meeting with Borna Coric. The winner will become the first finalist from his respective country in the 26-year history of the Gerry Weber Open. Carlos Moya was the only other Spanish semi-finalist, losing to Nicklas Kulti in 1999. Ivo Karlovic was the only other Croatian semi-finalist, falling to Federer in 2015.

IN-FORM EBDEN FACES FEDERER FOR 1ST TIME IN HALLE QUARTERS •

Matthew Ebden is playing at the Gerry Weber Open with the highest ranking of his injury-plagued career. The World No. 60 can add the biggest win of his career to his resume on Friday when he meets nine-time champion and World No. 1 Roger Federer in the quarter-finals. Ebden reached No. 61 in 2012, but following left knee surgery, fell as low as No. 699 in 2017. Federer, who saved two match points on Thursday against Benoit Paire, has won 18 straight matches on grass courts.

The winner of Federer vs. Ebden will meet the winner of Yuichi Sugita vs. Denis Kudla in the semi-finals on Saturday. Sugita won the 2017 Antalya title on grass, but began the 2018 grass-court season on a nine-match tour-level losing streak. His second-round win over No. 7 Dominic Thiem is the biggest of his career. Kudla, a qualifier, has not dropped a set through four matches this week. The American is 16-14 lifetime on grass courts, 15-41 on hard courts and 3-9 on clay courts.

None of the four quarter-finalists on the bottom-half of the draw have dropped a set. No. 4 seed Roberto Bautista Agut meets Karen Khachanov with hopes of joining Carlos Moya in 1999 as just the second Spanish semi-finalist in Halle’s 26-year tournament history. Following that match, Borna Coric competes in his first grass-court quarter-final against 2015 finalist Andreas Seppi. Coric, who turns 22 in November, has surpassed 20 wins in a season for the fourth straight year.

FEDERER PERFECT VS. PAIRE; GERMANS SEEK ANOTHER HALLE QF •

Roger Federer is 5-0 in matches and 11-0 in sets against his second-round opponent at the Gerry Weber Open on Thursday. And he hasn’t even played Benoit Paire on grass yet. The World No. 1 is on a 17-match grass-court win streak dating back to his ninth title run in Halle last June. While Paire is 18-18 on grass, Federer is 145 matches over .500 at 169-24. He’s just five victories shy of Jimmy Connors’ Open Era record for grass-court wins. Connors went 174-34 on the surface.

Two other former champions will be in Stadion action: No. 6 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber and wild card Florian Mayer. Kohlschreiber, who won a Federer-less title at Halle in 2011, seeks his 11th quarter-final appearance at the event against Matthew Ebden. The 34-year-old from Augsburg thrives on home-court advantage. Kohlschreiber is 121-63 lifetime in Germany (.658) and 318274 elsewhere (.537), with five of his eight ATP World Tour singles titles coming on home soil.

Kohlschreiber and Mayer, a native of Bayreuth, were born 11 days apart and share a history of success at the Gerry Weber Open. Mayer is bidding for his eighth quarter-final appearance in Halle, highlighted by his unlikely run to the 2016 title as the World No. 192. The lowest-ranked champion in tournament history routed Richard Gasquet 6-2 6-2 on Tuesday, two days after the Frenchman won the ’s-Hertogenbosch title. Mayer meets another 34-year-old, Andreas Seppi, on Thursday.

THIEM, NISHIKORI IN 2ND-ROUND ACTION AT GERRY WEBER OPEN •

Dominic Thiem has yet to win a Grand Slam or ATP Masters 1000 title, but the 24-year-old Austrian is arguably the ATP World Tour’s most consistent player. Thiem leads the tour with 36 victories in 2018 entering his second-round match against Yuichi Sugita in Halle on Wednesday. The No. 3 seed and World No. 7 is trying to reach his 10th quarter-final in 13 tournaments this season. He captured the ninth and 10th titles of his career at Buenos Aires and Lyon respectively.

Kei Nishikori is also among the greatest players without a Grand Slam or ATP Masters 1000 title. The Japanese superstar meets Karen Khachanov for the second straight year in the second round of Halle. Nishikori will hope for a better outcome after retiring against Khachanov in 2017 due to a left hip injury. His 2015 and 2016 Gerry Weber Open campaigns ended with injuries as well. Nishikori started this season on the ATP Challenger Tour after returning from a right wrist injury.

Also scheduled for Stadion is 19-year-old Greek sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas against American qualifier Denis Kudla. Tsitsipas leads all #NextGenATP players not named Alexander Zverev with 19 wins this season, including a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Thiem en route to his first final at Barcelona. Another #NextGenATP player, 17-year-old German Rudolf Molleker, seeks the second win of his career against Nikoloz Basilashvili on Court 1. That is the last remaining first-round singles match.

FEDERER BEGINS QUEST FOR 10; ZVEREV LEADS GERMAN CHARGE •

Roger Federer begins the defense of his No. 1 ranking and Gerry Weber Open championship on Tuesday when he meets Aljaz Bedene. Federer must win his 10th Halle title to remain World No. 1 after returning to the top spot in the ATP Rankings on Monday. The Swiss has won half of his 18 grass-court titles in Halle, making it the most successful tournament of his storied career. Federer is 168-24 lifetime with a 16-match winning streak on grass, including Sunday’s title victory in Stuttgart.

Two-time runner-up Alexander Zverev, who lost to Federer in the 2017 final, opens his campaign against fellow 21-year-old Borna Coric. The Croat defeated Zverev in the 2013 US Open junior semi-finals and at 2015 ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati and the 2017 US Open. But Zverev won their most recent meeting on 29 March at ATP Masters 1000 Miami. Though he is seeking his first Halle title, Zverev has enjoyed success on home soil as the two-time reigning champion in Munich.

Zverev is one of six Germans in singles action on Tuesday, including his 30-year-old brother Mischa Zverev. Play begins in Stadion with two former champions from Germany: 2011 champion Philipp Kohlschreiber meets Marton Fucsovics, then 2016 champion Florian Mayer faces No. 8 seed Richard Gasquet. An All-German affair caps the Court 1 schedule when Peter Gojowczyk plays 17-year-old Rudolf Molleker, who earned his first ATP World Tour win last week in Stuttgart.

10 THINGS TO WATCH IN HALLE 1) Fantastic Fields: The best players in tennis will put on their grass-court shoes this week at ATP World Tour 500 events in Halle and London. At the Gerry Weber Open, nine-time champion Roger Federer joins two-time finalist Alexander Zverev and Roland Garros runner-up Dominic Thiem. 2) He’s No. 1: Federer arrives in Halle on Monday as the World No. 1, after winning his semi-final on Saturday at the MercedesCup. With runs to both the Stuttgart final and Halle title, Federer would be No. 1 on 25 June. Otherwise, Rafael Nadal will be the World No. 1 entering Wimbledon. 3) Goat on Grass: Federer enters Halle with a 168-24 record on grass and the surface’s best win percentage in the Open Era (.875). The Swiss has won more titles at Halle (9) than any other event in his career. Nadal is the only player in the Open Era to reach double-digit titles at a single event with 11 championships each at Monte-Carlo, Barcelona and Roland Garros. 4) Sensational Sascha: Zverev returns to Halle following his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland Garros. Also this spring, the 21-year-old German became the first player since Marin Cilic in 2014 to reach three finals in as many weeks. Zverev won his second Munich title on 6 May and third ATP Masters 1000 title at Madrid on 13 May before finishing runner-up to Nadal at Rome on 20 May. 5) Dominant Thiem: Zverev’s 34 wins this season are second only to Thiem’s 35. The Austrian ended Zverev’s Roland Garros run en route to his first Grand Slam final. Thiem is 13-11 on grass, though he did win the 2016 Stuttgart title after saving two match points against Federer in the semi-finals. 6) Highs and Lows: Like Federer, Lucas Pouille will arrive in Halle after reaching the MercedesCup semi-finals. Pouille captured the Montpellier title and reached two other finals during a four-week stretch this winter. But the Frenchman has also suffered six losses this season in opening matches. 7) German Champions: Philipp Kohlschreiber and Florian Mayer hope to win home titles in Halle for the second time. Kohlschreiber capitalized on a Federer-less draw in 2011 to take the title, while Mayer edged Zverev for the 2016 title. Zverev defeated Federer one day earlier in the semi-finals. 8) Good Run of Bad Luck: Former World No. 4 Kei Nishikori returns to Halle for the sixth straight year despite his string of injuries at the event. Nishikori retired in the 2015 semi-finals (left leg), conceded a walkover in the 2016 second round (rib) and retired in the 2017 second round (left hip). 9) Get Wins to the Greek: It took Stefanos Tsitsipas nine tries before he earned the first ATP World Tour win of his career last October at Shanghai. The 19-year-old Greek is already up to 18 wins this season, highlighted by a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Thiem en route to his first final at Barcelona in April. 10) Grasshoppers: After going 14-0 on grass and finishing 2017 as the No. 1 doubles team in the world, Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo started this season with the Sydney title. They haven’t reached a final since. Kubot and Melo are the defending Gerry Weber Open doubles champions.
