YES TO LIFE YOUR OPTIONS FOR CANCER

Dear Friends and Supporters, We’ve moved! Our office has moved eastward to a new home in a purpose built modern building called The Energy Centre in Hoxton, owned by another charity, The Circus Space. We are just off the north west corner of vibrant Hoxton Square - see below for the full address. Huge thanks go to the hardy team that helped with the move! Meanwhile, two of our fabulous trustees who have been with Yes to Life since the very beginning have retired. Andy Curry, who has so successfully run the charity’s main fundraising events, will continue as our Special Events Organiser, and Antony Perlmutter, who has given us great legal advice and support, will continue as a legal advisor. Their contributions to the new and growing organisation have been invaluable.

New Champion: Maureen Lipman We spotted a profile of Maureen Lipman recently in the Daily Mail in which she expressed a strong affinity for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and stated ‘If I get cancer, I’m going down the alternative route’. We told her about Yes to Life and she was keen to support us. “Yes to Life is opening up new possibilities for people with cancer by helping them access Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). This is a unique service in the UK which is sorely needed. CAM has so much to offer to people who have the misfortune to be diagnosed with cancer. I wholeheartedly endorse their efforts and urge you join me in supporting Yes to Life.”

At the same time we welcome to the board Margaret Fletcher, Jerome Burne and Robin Baron. Margaret has 30 years’ senior management experience in the public and charity sectors; Jerome is a highly regarded freelance health writer and author with a particular interest in CAM, and Robin is a lawyer with a broad experience of business law. Two more experts have joined our team of medical advisors: Dr Maurice Orange and Rebecca Edwards. Maurice is a GP, an anthroposophical doctor and medical director of Park Attwood Clinic, and Rebecca is a naturopath and one of our Wellbeing Workshop team. Kelly Walker , who single handedly created and managed our Helpline service has left us to begin married life on the south coast with husband Nick. We owe a great debt to Kelly for her incredible work, and she will be missed! We wish her every happiness. Clare McLusky has joined the Help Centre team as a skilled new volunteer. Additionally, we have had several other excellent new volunteers joining us recently - see our website for the full line up! And lastly, we are extremely grateful for the magnificent voluntary bookkeeping work put in by Joao de Freitas over the last year and a half - we wish him every success in his new job. Very best wishes to you all, Robin Daly - Chairman and Founder

Wellbeing Workshops Last year, supporter Fiona Robson and Imelda Burke, proprietor of Marylebone natural cosmetics shop Content/Wellbeing, came up with the idea of morning workshops to help those with cancer feel better about themselves, learn about natural health and beauty products, and also to provide an opportunity to share their concerns.  These small, intimate sessions took place at Imelda’s shop. This year, Silver Pearl Trust has added to the workshops with an afternoon of complementary therapy sessions. This, along with a delicious healthy lunch and snacks provided by Rootmaster and Raw Fairies has expanded the workshops into full day events. Contact the office or check the website for further information.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all at Yes to Life for your support so far, without which I would feel a lot more lost. You have given me hope, solutions, and cheered me up when I felt a bit down” - Simon

Yes to Life Seminar Series ‘Building an Integrated Treatment Programme for Cancer’ On 20 February, Yes to Life held its first seminar, supported by BioCare.

YES TO LIFE YOUR OPTIONS FOR CANCER

Grand Union Walk A team made up of our very own Yes to Life volunteers and staff spent the first May Bank Holiday walking 65 miles of the Grand Union Canal in 3 days. They slept (or tried to) under the stars (and rain) in tents at night and walked 8 hours a day.

Patricia Peat of Cancer Options opened with a talk on the concept of integrated medicine and traced its progress through the challenging environment of orthodox cancer medicine and the unique politics that surround it.  Dr Damien Downing presented a detailed study on two key nutrients in cancer treatment: vitamins D and C. Dr Maurice Orange gave a holistic view of integrated treatment and focussed on the highly successful use of mistletoe as a cancer treatment (see below), and Rebecca Edwards proposed that nutrition is the foundation of any integrated approach.  Due to the success of this event, we are holding a second seminar on 18 September in central London to expand on the same topic with an equally inspirational group of speakers. Patricia Peat will introduce and facilitate the day. Keep an eye on our website for the full details.

Sam Kidby our PR Adviser, and one of the walkers had this to say; “The 65 miles were pure adventure and I think can only be described as ‘extreme canal walking’! Particular highlights included: Walking 5 miles in the wrong direction within two hours of starting; sleeping in a tent for the first time ever (in a tempest!); learning how to open locks for canal boats and generally engaging with the canal community (it’s a different world!); sliding down a mud slope face first; and covering 65 miles for a great charity, bang on our target time (except we missed the train back by two minutes!!)” Together they raised over £5,500 for Yes to Life!

Dartathon Yes - a marathon darts session, brainchild of Steve Lerigo, ably assisted by Paul Weldon, Paul Horncastle and Simon Poole. The team played darts for 7 hours non stop!! Surrounded by supporters in the basement of The Three Lords pub, they managed to complete 132 games back to back and provide fantastic entertainment for all who were there. Steve’s account of the day: “Happily I can report it went off without a hitch - no one got a dart in their eye etc. It was a great day, with a number of people showing their support during the course of the event. The generosity was humbling to say the least.”

“I wanted to drop you a line to say a big thank you for the wonderful seminar. It certainly went above and beyond my expectations and all the speakers were an inspiration.” Rachel Bailey, Nutritionist

The event raised a massive £5000 for Yes to Life! Thanks Steve!

“You must feel very pleased with yesterday’s conference. As far as I could judge, it was a total success. Thanks for making it possible.” Beata Bishop - Author, and Founder, Gerson Support Group UK

Kira Moore and the fantastic staff at the Ship Inn, London EC3, raised a phenomenal £2200 for the charity with their unique event built around customers’ donated ties. Huge thanks to the staff who are busy planning their next event!

Mistletoe is a folk remedy for cancer that was espoused by Austrian spiritual philosopher Rudolf Steiner, originator of Waldorf education and biodynamic agriculture amongst a mass of other unique initiatives. Generally self administered by daily intramuscular injection over extended periods, mistletoe operates by gently enhancing the body’s innate immune defences. Mistletoe has a good track record of use on the continent, is well evidenced and can even be obtained on the NHS in some areas.

“Thank you very much for giving my Mum the chance to use the sauna, she absolutely loved it and used it regularly. I think alternative therapy is a wonderful thing and it definitely inspired my Mum.” - Chloe
