Dear Our Times Supporter, Apparently exercising is bad for my health. My blood pressure goes up whenever I go to our local elementary school to play badminton. Why? Because I’m always profoundly aggravated by the sight of a large, shiny, golden sign on the gym wall advertising the name of a large private company. What is that doing there, so prominently displayed on the wall of a public school? My guess – they donated money. Good for them. But are the kids supposed to be learning, or learning to be thankful to private business for their public education? Sure looks like the latter. And don’t get me started about how I see red whenever I go to the local YMCA, where I have to pass by rooms named after corporate sponsors like the famously anti-union Michelin. Keep breathing, I tell myself, and choose your battles.

DEAR TO MY HEART One battle that remains dear to my heart, and I hope your heart too, is keeping Our Times magazine going. Because of you, dear readers, and with nary a drop of corporate sponsorship to skew the stories of Canada’s independent labour magazine, we are celebrating our 35th year of publishing stories about workers’ rights and social justice. Workers are who we put on the cover of Our Times, and workers’ issues are what fill our pages. But we need your help. We know you care about independent Canadian labour journalism. Please consider donating $100 or whatever you can afford to Our Times’ annual fundraising drive. If you donate $200 or more, we’ll automatically renew your subscription for two years. Thank you!

WORKERS’ VOICES This year in Our Times you heard from nurses, laundry workers, postal workers, retail workers, sugarcane workers, filmmakers, musicians and more. Injured workers in Canada, and in Central America, called for health and safety on the job. Indigenous activists called for the government to be held accountable, and for the labour movement to rally around environmental and social justice. Climate justice activists called for a just transition for workers in resource-based industries, and for good green jobs for all. Low-income workers shared their stories of trying to survive in difficult economic times. Anti-racist activists spoke out about the need to rid our movement of the scourge of racism, and of the need for equity for all. Everyone speaking in Our Times believes a better world is possible, and we know you do, too. . . . /2
