STUDENTS OF ALL AGES SUPPORT COMMUNITIES NEAR & FAR In the spirit of the season, several student groups have taken the initiative spread some holiday cheer to others. Here are just a few of the ways our students have been involved in supporting communities near and far: The Pelham High Boys Basketball team volunteered at the Big Fish Ministries Thrift Store in Foley, AL while in Gulf Shores for a recent tournament. In collaboration with Oak Mountain Missions, the Pelham High Art Club shopped for an entire family's Christmas gifts. They also made Christmas cards for residents at

a local nursing home and took the time to personally deliver the cards and visit with residents. Pelham Ridge students collected nearly 1100 canned goods for the Oak Mountain Missions Food Pantry. 5th-grade students at Pelham Ridge made cards filled with appreciation and holiday greetings for Marines stationed at Camp Shorab in Afghanistan. The Pelham High SGA purchased items to stuff stockings for residents at Family Connections in Alabaster. They also donated toiletries, art supplies, and coats for the organization to have on hand when new residents arrive. The Pelham High Cheerleaders spent an evening volunteering for the Salvation Army as Bell Ringers at a local store.

PELHAM STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN WORLD-WIDE "HOUR OF CODE" ACTIVITIES During Computer Science Education Week our schools participated in the international initiative called Hour of Code. It's an introduction to computer science that shows students of all ages that everyone can learn the basics of coding. Pelham Oaks and Pelham Ridge students participated in a variety of coding activities that focused on problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity. Activities included interactive visual programming lessons and off-screen programming techniques that challenged and captivated the students. The lessons also provided the opportunity to collaborate, and students with more experience even took on leadership roles to help guide and teach classmates in some of the lessons.
