The beginnings of the Church of Christ in Sanford date back to 1919 when members met in private homes to worship. The years passed and the congregation grew. By 1945, the church held services at the Woman’s Club on Oak Avenue. Within two years, the church moved into its own building at 201 Elm Street and had a full-time pastor. But by 1956, the congregation outgrew the Elm Street facility and soon purchased the property at the current location on Park Avenue. Construction began in 1960, with church members providing the majority of the labor. The building is concrete-block construction and the floors are terrazzo. The 1970s saw more church growth with the addition of a fellowship hall, classroom, and office suite. An exterior renovation took place in 1991.

TABLESCAPE
In an effort to downsize, Brian and Nancy Buck moved from neighboring Winter Springs and have been in their home for three years. The 1942 home had the charm they were looking for, but it was the sense of community that really attracted them to Sanford. Brian jokingly says, “We bought a garage, and it came with a house.” The garage is the envy of many neighbors and was an addition of a prior owner whose trade was in the construction business. The home was originally a three bedroom/one bath, and the Bucks have converted one of the bedrooms into an en suite bathroom and closet. They have also made changes to the original bathroom and refinished the original floors throughout the home. An interesting fact about the house is that it was at one time owned by the neighboring church, which was confirmed by a member of the Church of Christ who shared that the Buck home was the venue for his wedding reception.

212 W. 16th Street John & Sarah Miller PHOTOSTOP
This 1948 New England Cape Cod immediately caught the eye of owner Sarah Miller. She was born and raised in Sanford but has spent half her life in New England. The house captivated her and John with its sprawling park-like lawn and location next to a park. They purchased the home in 1996, shortly before John’s retirement. Sarah and John are only the third owners. The house was built in 1948, by Chow and Dorothy Harkey. After their death, it was deeded to their nephew Bill Cagle. The Millers have tried to maintain the house’s original style from the ‘40s. Sarah particularly enjoys the family room which juts out from the main house and offers a panoramic view of the lawn and oak trees. John favors his home office, with access to a private veranda through French doors. They most recently remodeled the kitchen/breakfast room, which also provides a beautiful view of Sarah’s gardens. The grounds are often the venue for local photographers and weddings of family and friends.

Trey Laramor & Kayli Wicker This 1935 home was originally owned by a tax collector. Currently, engaged couple Kayli Wicker and Trey Laramore reside there. The house was renovated in 1970 and then again in 2005, but happily, the renovations left the original hardwood floors throughout. The thing that attracted the couple most about the house were the 100+ year old oak trees in the front and side of the house, providing shade for the majority of the lot. Something else that caught their eye was the adorable mother-in-law cottage that sits behind the house, across the patio; it’s currently home to Trey’s sister. According to the Sanford Museum, the house had only two owners between 1935 and 2000, and one of them owned it for forty-eight years.
201 W. 17th Street Lyla Maurer
This charming house, built in 1937, is currently the home of Lyla Maurer. Lyla is the 12th owner of this property and has been renovating since she purchased it two years ago. She loves the vintage character of the house and the big fenced back yard shaded by oaks. Lyla and her fiancé, musician Dutch Uithoven, love Sanford’s small town historic feel and quirky sense of fun. Lyla’s Cottage is occasionally host to orchestra rehearsals and neighbors are treated to impromptu concerts. Although the house is still a work in progress, Lyla is happy to welcome visitors and will be displaying her collection of vintage Christmas ornaments and memorabilia.
The couple is set to be married in April, in another of Sanford’s historic buildings, The Sanford Grammar School, now known as Preservation Hall.

John and Audra Dupuis’ love of Sanford brought them to this 1920s-era Colonial Revival style house in 2012. John and Aura were especially attracted to the size of the yard and the pool, which has been there since the 1940s. The hardwood floors in the main rooms, the stairs leading to the second floor, and the family room fireplace are all original. At some point in the past, a porch was enclosed and an additional section added to the back of the house. The owners have added a bathroom and updated the living room.

Greg and Joni Giraulo have lived in their house for just over a year, having moved in just in time for the home’s 100th birthday. One of the many reasons they were attracted to Sanford was that they did not want a cookie-cutter home, and they also needed to find a home big enough for a family. The house had undergone several renovations through the years before the Giraulos purchased it, and the Giraulos have made improvements including plumbing, paint, landscaping, and irrigation. The house has hosted many family gatherings and weddings.

The property features a beautiful arched portico, heart of pine wood floors, original windows, a large brick fireplace, and a giant oak tree adorning the front yard. Improvements have been made over the years, including interior and exterior painting, a bathroom renovation, kitchen updates, and a metal roof. Come by and visit the many “Tablescape” designs sponsored by local businesses and residents. This Classical Revival building, constructed of red pressed brick trimmed in Georgia sandstone, was built in 1917 by architect James Wetmore. Over the course of its history, it has served several different functions, including housing the Sanford Library and serving as the downtown police substation.
Shorty moved into this Tiny House On Wheels (THOW) full-time this year. She built the house last year while living here in Sanford and is proud of the re-purposed building materials, including a piano that has been converted into a bed! Shorty travels with her Tiny House and speaks at many community events. Most recently, she was featured on the Today Show.
With its intact original facade and two original lampposts, it greets guests from the Sanford airport, Amtrak passengers, and Sanfordites riding the city trolley. In 2016, more than 17,000 people visited the Welcome Center and gift shop. The Center hosts the monthly Alive After 5 street party and the Art Walk and is the location for the new Tourism Office. Verrastro Houseboat
Rebecca and Michael Verrastro purchased their houseboat in 2012, intending to take it to Palm Beach Gardens, where they had resided for 20+ years. While making arrangements for the move, they visited Sanford many times and fell in love with the friendly atmosphere and hometown feel. Needless to say, the boat never went south. Instead, the Verrastros sold their home and moved north. Their biggest surprise has been all Sanford has to offer. “It seems like there is always something going on here, be it a play, musical act, festival, the zoo, Blue Springs, or just spending quiet time watching the birds, manatees, and alligators on Lake Monroe.” (The houseboat was built in Georgia and stayed on Lake Lanier before being trucked to Florida in 2009.)

Blake Suddeth, Adam Barney, and Mike Richardson have owned this amazing urban apartment since March 2017. The attraction was obvious: unique details, the recent renovation, and the prime location. The apartment was renovated by longtime resident Barbara Ferrell. The only upgrading the new owners had to do was put in furniture to open it up as an Airbnb. While the property is known for being a fire station, it has also been used as city hall, a police station, a courthouse, and a jail. This unique building was built in 1887 and originally had three floors, but the third was removed to stabilize the building.

Jeanine Taylor Folk Art | Gallery on First TABLESCAPES
Jeanine Taylor’s Folk Art Gallery has been housed here since 2005. What attracted Jeanine, a Florida native, to move her gallery (and later her home) to Sanford was the historic downtown, its potential, and an invitation from Howard & Robin Marks. During the buildout, eight working artist studios (Gallery on First) were created. The upstairs apartments were also refurbished and are used for outof-town artists in residence. The biggest challenge was the recession, as the gallery had just moved from Winter Park. However, Jeanine and her crew dug in and got through the hard times. “I feel such support from my Sanford community” says Taylor. Jeanine will be hosting many of this year’s Tablescapes. Don’t miss these gorgeous displays by local merchants and residents! “The original 1886 building was destroyed by the great fire of 1887. Local legend has it that rubble from the first building was embedded in the pediment corner of the roof of this Romanesque revival building when it was constructed for Frederick Hotchkiss in 1887. For many years, (1952-85) this housed Manuel Jacobson’s department store.” It is now owned by Howard Marks, a local attorney and Sanford aficionado.

Discover the beautiful hidden Horstmeyer residence, the ultimate space for hip, urban living. Close to everything and a short walk to work, Doug and Annie Horstmeyer have renovated a special place to call home that is tucked away next to their popular Feed Store. Built in the early 1920s, this building originally served Seminole Fire Equipment for over 25 years.
Horstmeyer Farm & Garden A feed store took occupancy in 1972, the original owners were Cecil & Margaret Tucker. Doug and Annie Horstmeyer purchased the building and the business from the Tuckers in 2004, maintaining the character of this historic building. A unique transformation was the build out of the owner’s offices from an open storage area upstairs, which includes vintage windows, repurposed from a Sanford demolition. They have made many improvements and expanded last year with the acquisition of the Saddler Tack & Apparel business. They also hosted a nondenominational church in the building from 2011 to 2016.

Tiny Marta is a less than 220 square feet home and includes a loft bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, and even a standard size closet. Though a true “tiny home,” Marta was built by Brad and Cathy Griffiths of Sanctuary Tiny Homes to feel spacious and welcoming. The kitchen is large, with ample counter space, so meals can be prepared comfortably.
