Department of Film Studies School of Languages, Linguistics and Film Queen Mary, University of London FLM205 Scriptwriting: Adaptation and Original Script Academic Session 2018 Pre-requisite: Joint or Single Honours Film Studies Students (Not available to Erasmus or Associate Students) Assessment: Script Adaptation: (from a short story) 50% weighting. Length of script adaptation: 15 to 20 pages. This script will be an adaptation of a short story which will be adapted into a script for a short film. The short stories for adaptation are The House in Turk Street by Dashiell Hammett, or Lust, Caution by Eileen Chang. Original Script: (for a short fiction film) 50% weighting Length of original script: 15 to 20 pages. This original script will be for a short film and will be 15 to 20 pages in length. This script must be original work, but may be based on real events, which do not exist elsewhere in prose or drama form. Students must note that failure to do so may result in de-registration from the module, which may have a significant impact on their overall degree classification DESCRIPTION Scriptwriting: Adaptation and Original script is an optional module for single honours and joint honours Film Studies students. The module offers the opportunity to study practice related to both script adaptation and original scriptwriting and their interrelationship is an important step for anyone wishing to establish their creative writing skills above a foundation level. Both types of scriptwriting will be given equal weight as topics. The module is not available to associate students.

LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE MODULE On successful completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate: • • • • •

The ability to adapt a pre-existing text – prose short story - into a film script An understanding of the practice and techniques of script adaptation The ability to write an original script that is not based on a pre-existent script An understanding of the skills and techniques required for original scriptwriting The ability to work the to the format and discipline of scriptwriting

MODULE SCHEDULE Schedule: You attend one two-hour workshop each week for this module. There are two workshop groups. They are Monday 11.00-1.00 and Monday 3.00-5.00. MARKING CRITERIA Script Adaptation •

Standard of English: spelling, punctuation and grammar.



Script format: correct use of the script format taught on the course



Character: Establishing and developing character, establishing and developing character relationships; character consistency, coherence, development and creative adaptation from the short story.



Plotting: Plot clarity, coherence, development and creative adaptation from the short story. Use of dramatic techniques for storytelling such as suspense, reversals, climaxes etc.

Original Script Assignment •
