Bio: Chinese-Canadian-Australian artist Derek Wong’s works have been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Toronto Public Library. The AGO remarks that Derek’s artworks ‘embody the spirit of reinvention, repurposing, and revitalization … reminiscent of the artworks of Piet Mondrian and Josef Albers.’ Using only pure colours in striking forms, Derek’s paintings are mini festivals that celebrate the energy, harmony, and spirituality of life in modern cities, envisioning how Mondrian or Albers might paint if they grew up as our contemporaries.
Born in colonial ‘East meets West’ Hong Kong and grew up in indigenous-influenced Australia, Derek first studied engineering, then music. Majored in classical composition in the realms of Mahler symphonies and Wagner operas, Derek composed and performed contemporary classical music extensively before turning his attention to the visual arts. After years of experimenting with a large variety of materials and techniques Derek reached his distinctive style of pure colours in striking forms, beaming with uplifting energy and spirit of optimism.
