About Pop Up Projects CIC   Pop Up Projects CIC is a not-for-profit social enterprise – incorporated 25th January 2011 – governed by a Board and currently staffed by a team of four full-time employees.

The company has an impressive track record of engaging children, schools, families and communities through far-reaching, imaginative and innovative literature programmes and events which impact on enjoyment of reading and writing. At the heart of our work is the conviction that by facilitating pleasurable encounters with authors and their stories, we can ignite imaginations, inspire future story-makers, and build more literate communities. We currently have Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation status (2015-2018) - NPOs “represent some of the best arts practice in the world, and play a vital role in helping meet the Arts

Council’s mission” - and will re-apply in 2017 for the next funding period. We have secured £2,000,000 in funding to date including from: Linklaters global law firm; Bloomberg; The Guardian; Paul Hamlyn Foundation; Esmee Fairbairn Foundation; Gulbenkian Foundation; The Francis Crick Institute; Royal   1

Opera House (and ROH Bridge); Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts and Strategic Touring Fund and Arts Council Wales. The figure also includes £620,000 in fees-for-services from schools. In 2016 we won a Silver Corporate Engagement Award for our five-year corporate partnership with global law firm Linklaters LLP.

We were recently successful in our bid to ACE’s Catalyst: Evolve programme to increase capacity

and expertise to attract more private giving, diversify income streams and achieve a “step change” in our organisational resilience. This success has come along at a time when the organisation has developed a new strategy to raise significant funds from individuals and corporates. A major milestone in the organisation’s development is the recruitment of a Development Manager to work on sponsorship, donations schemes, and other potential fundraising initiatives. The funding also enables us to incentivise giving from new sponsors and donors by offering match-funding of up to £98,000. Our Work to Date   We deliver the impact described above predominately through our Pop Up in Schools programmes: a

unique consultancy and event management service which requires partner schools (whole primaries from nursery to year six; whole key stages in secondaries) to devote one-sixth of their literacy or English lessons annually to our reading and writing for pleasure model, and which transforms the teaching and learning of literature. Since January 2011 we have delivered over 31,000 books and 1,750 author workshops (incl. 170 in museums, galleries, libraries) for 51,000 pupils aged 3-14, with 1,832 teachers participating across 184 schools in London, Essex, Kent, Cambridgeshire, Shropshire and North Wales. Find out more about our work at www.pop-up.org.uk - however please note this website is out of date and will be re-developed soon.

We have also delivered Pop Up Communities projects: tailored programmes of immersive literary and arts activities targeted at family and community groups, designed by authors and artists who

work with participants co-create quality, public-facing outcomes which have included: public sculpture and published books, film and animation, performances and exhibitions. After a period of relative inactivity in this area, we plan to commence delivering family literature projects through all our partner primary and SEN schools in 2017. Between 2011 and 2014 we also produced five Pop Up Festivals: free public events which innovate

around live literature by commissioning children’s writers, illustrators, poets and storytellers to design and deliver imaginative, interactive events, activities or products (‘Pop Up Experiences’) for children of all ages. Our five festivals in London, Essex and Shropshire presented over 500 hours of free live literature for 20,000 attendees. At the European Diversity Awards 2011 we won ‘European Community Project of the Year’, sponsored by Google. Pop Up Festival activity has been ‘paused’

since 2014 and is currently being re-shaped primarily as an umbrella programme bringing all our partner schools together from 2017.  Our Work 2016-2019   Over the next three years, with expected funding from Paul Hamlyn Foundation and confirmed matched income from our partner schools, we will deliver our education programmes to over 16,000 pupils in ca. 50 primary, secondary and SEN schools in England and Wales annually. Annual programmes will commence in January and culminate in a two-week programme of over 600 author workshops (one for every participating class) in March; while using the over-arching Pop Up Festival and associated publicity to encourage local organisations to provide additional activities alongside our authors workshops programme, ideally with the aim of engaging families outside classrooms. The Development Manager post, supported by the Pop Up team and an external agency, will be seeking sponsorship to raise Pop Up Festival’s profile through a PR campaign and 30,000 distributed programmes, in order to: ●

share the Pop Up story with wider communities;

profile funders and partners, thus significantly enhancing our offer to national/local sponsors;

provide new opportunities to promote publishers and authors;

increase partnership working with LEAs, libraries, museums and galleries;

increase economic outcomes through independent buy-in from new schools.

In future years we also envisage developing out-of-school content as part of this Pop Up Festival, potentially a touring selection of Pop Up Experiences.

Also of note is our developing digital platform Pop Up Hub (www.pop-up-hub.com) for the children,

authors, teachers, schools and families we work with. Pop Up Hub connects reading with creativity and self-expression by inspiring storymaking, showcasing stories and introducing diverse authors and quality books to new audiences; and allows teachers to share best practice and teaching resources. Access is free for all our partner schools. With expected funding from Paul Hamlyn Foundation and sponsorship raised under the Development Manager, we plan to develop Pop Up Hub further, including through producing a new digital story-making/self-publishing tool, and potentially launching a new subscription-based package to schools nationally and internationally.

Other significant projects which are currently being packaged for funder investment, and which the Development Manager will engage with, include:

a national creative writing competition with the Government Art Collection;

a SEND-only schools programme in London;

a children’s illustrator exchange between the UK and the three Baltic States ahead of being the market focus at London Book Fair 2018.
